Funny how teams that want to play in their forward half (like us) are 'boring' where as 'exciting' is now apparently teams that sit deep and try and score on midfield and half forward turnovers as if they are playing Catenaccio.
Opening Round revealed. Where's the complaining at?
Yet again, after a raging success this year clearly - the VFL is doing Opening Round again in 2026.
Of course, all the predicted contenders and risers are featuring in it.
But of course it doesn't feature Fremantle.
Of course they all get a leg up on the rest of the competition with an extra game of conditioning under their belt.
Of course it features Saints & Collingwood (against their will) because of a shitty documentary.
Of course Carlton & Sydney are opening up the season.
How can people take this ****ing league seriously?

really hoping that the AFL administrators have a serious review of the fixturing. It needs a big shake up to bring it into an era with 18/19 Clubs from all states in Australia - not 12 in Melbourne. Its current principles are bias, inequity and false rivalry. The bye system, playing teams twice before playing a team once, the 6 6 6 fixture concept, gather round, the top 8 virtually set after the first 8 rounds, meaningless games in the second half of the season - are real problems that can’t be ignored any longer.
But with the worst AFL CEO in history, I don’t hold out much hope. Although with AI, who knows, the amount of people that will have workable solutions, may make them look silly if they hold firm with the current sinking ship.

Its actually quite funny and laughable.
So last round this year Carlton play Essendon on a Thursday night, and oh shit a few weeks out the FTA broadcaster tell AFL to shove it.
Then a few months later the draw for the first 2 rounds next year come out and Carlton are back on Thursday night prime time in both as Carlton v Richmond is the following Thursday to opening round.

Is ladder position determined for fixturing purposes by home & away results (where we finished sixth) or by finals as well (where we finished eighth)? Either way we’ll get boned, just a case of how boned we get.
Final finish.
Although it really doesn’t matter, we didn’t make finals the year before and had a harder draw than Geelong with away games to start and finish.

How can you have a bye before playing a game? Then, have teams have two before a team like Fremantle , actually get to have their only bye.

It's a small sample size but it wouldn't surprise me if that extra week of rest and management during the season may play a small part as to why every grand finalist has played in opening round since it's introduction.
Correlation is not causation but let’s see how things work out.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see all 4 northern teams make the 8 regardless of the opening round.
Will it assist them in the finals? I would have thought so.

True.
I really don’t trust the AFL and seems most decisions are based on money, Northern markets and big Victorian clubs.
Spreading the season by a week would assist those teams and gain another break.
Let’s see what advantage it actually is but with the small sample it’s possible.

We'd have to win 3 flags in a row and cultivate some sort of rivalry with Sydney or Brisbane while doing it to ever get a shot at playing in opening round.
When this happens, opening round will already be dead and buried. It's a dead-end concept that is already starting to get taken over by the Vic teams (see Saints vs. Pies at the MCG for some unknown reason).

That's a good result if true. Ever since opening round began we've been getting fixtured top 4 teams coming off opening round while we haven't played anybody. Such a badly run competition where equality is not even a consideration.
Would be extremely happy with that, as it'd literally be the first time we have played a team that didn't get a week's head start in "opening round"
