Who owns the mess at Brisbane?

Everyone gets Father-Son picks, right? Some start ups got games played in state comps recognised, right?

I think its more or less fair, even though the rule was brought in to rob Collingwood of Barrassi.

The academies seem to be yet another cunning plan to stuff flags into NSW. Brisbane have managed to use those rules to win multiple flags. Again. Good luck to them.

Brisbane has had 100% access to their academy for 14 years. This has allowed cheap access to talent while using draft picks and pp picks to trade in players. Father/sons the same in regards to cheap access.

Stuffed up multiple top picks with no consequence and blew 5 years of finals series before the weight of talent got too much.

Must be hard having different rules to most other clubs since you are the teachers pet.
Wait, are we talking FS again, or academies? What is your actual argument? Do other teams not get access to FS? Or academies?

What does draft or finals success have to do with anything?? 😂 You’re all over the shop.

The WA & SA clubs got screwed with the rules (a lot more games, couldn’t add games between comps together) so we had similar access to GC & GWS. Those two clubs at least got free agent protection for the first 8 years when that rule came in at their start up.

If FS is so important, why can academies nick them anyway?

Yes,
Other teams don’t get 100% access to academies because of the rules unlike the Northern teams who can carve up their state. Brisbane has nearly as many kids playing footy as WA to draw from.

The previous rules with junk picks for high draft academy or Father sons has been going for far too long and doesn’t look like they have gone anywhere close to what they need to do going forward to make it fair.

Lets be real here, Brisbane got themselves out of the hole they were in the right way.
Teams like North, West Coast etc should be using Brisbane as the textbook recipie for getting off the bottom.

They had a terrible culture. They couldn't keep young interstate players to save themselves, had poor coaches, poor administrators and the future look rough, real rough.

They then turned it around by bringing in good football people, good coaching staff, and changed their culture to where they not only wernt losing players, but actually became a destination club for interstate players.

Theres a saying fisherman have, fish attract other fish, so if you start to get good results, it attracts more people to want to be a part of that.
We are seeing that now, and they have gone from a club that everyone was worrying about its ability to survive, to one people are now worried is becoming too dominant.
Everyone who isnt successful like to bring down other people who are. Rather than have the desire to better yourself and use successful people as inspiration, they want to drag them back to their level instead.

When you have a dominate club like we have seen recently with Geelong, Brisbane and Richmond, they should serve as motivation to other clubs to emulate and learn from it.

Does Brisbane have an advantage through their academy? Yes, but they had that in 2013 as well, and it didnt help.
Their current team isnt overflowing with high performing academy picks, and they have father son access like every other club.
Everyone should be happy that Brisbane is healthy, in good hands, and a good future ahead. Its good for the competition, its good in that they arnt draining the AFL resources and it brings a national flavour to the game.

How are they not a drain? They have played in finals for 7 years in a row, won 2 flags in a row yet got 30m in distributions last year, making them third on the list.

Imagine when they stop winning again?

Just spotted this and my first thought was along the lines of oh hell what's happened now????

Was delighted to see it was a bump 👌

Re some of the comments ... the trading and free agency additions to our list were downstream of us fixing our culture ... just like no one wanted to go to the Saints (without hefty bounty payments) no one wanted to come to Brisbane ... we had to become a destination club before we would be a destination club...

No one can control their Father Sons or NGA or Academy opportunities (or travel or FTA exposure etc) but every club has a level of agency over their back of house, admin, culture and raison d'etre.

Build it and they will come.

Not at all, in fact... Brisbane has as many father sons as geelong did.

In 07 for our premiership our father sons were : g ablett n ablett and scarlett. That is 3 father sons. Brisbane had this year fletcher ashcroft ashcroft.

So 3 a piece. Then throw in all the academy kids free agents and high end draft picks you got ontop.
Bews and Blake 2 more F/S premiership players - So them 2, Hawkins, Ablett x 2, Scarlett- shit 6 in total.!! What a rort, Geelong supporters whinging about father sons, you have the info and front of you and still run the argument. You are seriously a special kind of stupid you lost.

He was cooked and retired, never to play another AFL game again. He played more games at Freo than the Brisbane Lions yet you got access to his kids.
But he played more games at Brisbane didn’t he. Your club couldn’t hold on to a future 2 x Brownlow medalist and you want to whinge about other clubs.

Just pointing out another inequity. Brisbane Bears & Lions got to add their games together, Freo didn't with aligned WAFL games & Freo AFL games that occurred before we joined.

If we have the same rules for all clubs, I won't complain.

That’s because the WAFL and the VFL/AFL are different competitions though aren’t they. You know that, you are just trying to justify your poor argument.

Geez you’re paddling.

Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions are the same club. Since you've already demonstrated your ignorance of my club, perhaps you ought to stop making declarations about it. Stick to the things you actually know.

Clear sign of BDS (Brisbane Derangement Syndrome).

Brisbane's 2024 premiership spine:

FB: Harris Andrews (academy)
CHB: Jack Payne (academy)
C: Will Ashcroft (father son)
CHF: Joe Daniher (father son)
FF: Eric Hipwood (academy)

Quite handy to have exclusive access to talent of this calibre. If only the AFL didn't take away our Riverina zone...

You might want to check where Daniher came from before Brisbane...

😂 No one wanted Harris. Hipwood is the most maligned player in the comp - hardly a reason for a premiership.

Daniher 😂😂😂
