While I take your point, it's very hard to tell a competitive beast to not be competitive...plus we want competitive beasts
Maybe he could have missed a couple of games with some niggles. Just something to ensure he got past pick 10 or so. Wouldn't have taken much to ensure he slid a bit.

But, yes, I agree with you on that.

I’m from Devonport in tassie as well , and unless he’s offered big money I don’t think he would go to Hobart to play .from all reports his family are big Carlton fans . Quicker to fly to Devonport from Melbourne than drive up from Hobart.
As an ignorant mainlander, are there such things as internal commercial flights in Tassie eg between Hobart and Launceston? How long would it take? Most of it would be taxiing!
Sorry I shouldnt have put that travel time in .probably not that big a deal these days. I do hope he stays at Carlton .

yup - i also think that if they all know we are trading out - the early bid probably wont happen - deals will have been lined up with multiple teams
That’s a very good point Uncle. The point of an early bid is that uses up a teams good draft picks and moves the bidding team’s other picks up to better picks.

If we move picks 9 and 11 far enough out it becomes less of an advantage for a team to bid early.

Did anyone else see or hear something about us trading pick 11 for Adelaide's F1? Thoughts on this? If we do this, I think we're genuinely concerned about what Walker is going to cost us next year
If Walker is bid top 2 we may be best to not trade up. Could end up costing three first round draft picks just to get him. This obviously is depending on where we finish and the new changes. Next years draft is supposedly a great deep draft.

If we have to trade up picks to get Cody we will get absolutely reemed.

Another reason Im keen to get another F1. Better off starting with to much currency and trading out, then not enough.

Its crazy too that the AFL are making next year harder again to match f/s academy without even having this year play out.
Its like some clubs get a free kick (Daicos/Ashcrofts) and then others have to pay through the nose for the same opportunity. At least Blues have Swans F1 which will help match Walker Bid
Daicos, Darcy, Ashcroft were all bid on early. The real bargains were much earlier, Ablett Jnr etc.
The other factor will be that Lions and Suns in particular will soon, maybe even this year, not be able to accumulate the currency to match and really good kids will shake out to the general draft. The system had to change somewhere as it was completely rorted, it's a shame it hurts us but, it was always going to sting someone.

Bottom line is we will get Dean, Ison and Walker in the next two drafts, along with whatever we can salvage from the wreckage of the bidding system. Our recent drafting history suggests we aren't very good at finding diamonds or capitalising on mid to later picks. Check the Blue Abroad vid which looks at drafts from 2019. This will need to improve as the system tightens.

Regardless of the “I want it now” 🤣 we knew we were committed to Dean and Ison and knew that TDK, Curnow and Silvagni were going well before the trade period, we needed to make more provision for points/picks to ensure we were are able to take another pick in the first round outside of Dean and wherever Ison falls.
Not sure there is much else we could have done. Potential partners would have demanded a premium, knowing what we were trying to accomplish, forcing us to back off or get completely ripped off!

When player and club have committed to each other like in the Dean situation, what benefit do other clubs get other than making the destination club earn the player and pay a fair price?

The other clubs don't get much benefit, but the integrity of the system kind of relies on them making a bid on a F/S or Academy player at a fair price.

I think everyone can feel confident that we will have well-considered deals and scenario plans in place for bids ranging from 1 to 20.

It may go without saying, but everything will be pre-planned and organised, allowing us to stay in control and avoid any reactive decision-making. There will be no surprises to our list management team at all.

West Coast for instance; if they bid on Dean at 2 than we lose picks 9 and 11. If we can’t use those selections it makes another player available for them at 13 and with their later picks. Essendon the same. Bid early enough and they might have another player available at 21.
Also it probably benefits those lower clubs if we have to go into deficit next season or can’t afford to trade for any future picks.

The real benefit is being able to blackmail us. West Coast can threaten pick 2 or guarantee he gets through to at least 6.

yep there may be plenty of deals, could be a long night 1.

other clubs looking at trading up to 5/6

us looking at trading up to 2/3/4

us looking at trading back to 9/11

packaging up our second rounders to move up the board with clubs with academy players
Suns, Brisbane, Giants, Sydney

I think we could definitely surprise other teams. Austin will be playing 6D chess, when there's no bids on Dean he drafts Ison at 9, then Lindsay at 11. Everyone else will be too bewildered at Austin that no-one bids on Dean and we get him with pick 43.

6D Chess alright!! I think we've got a big suprise up our sleeve ....

"With Pick #9 Carlton have elected to Pass"

There's risk in that approach from WC, too.

Sure, they could just go down the list of F/S and Academy's at pick 1 and screw over everyone. Annable, Ewland, Patterson, Dean. But they run the risk of a club not matching the bid and them ending up with a player they might not actually want.

And then the next time WC have a prospect they will be reaping what they have sewed, and all the clubs they screw over will be out for them.

It's a delicate balance. I'd be surprised if they bid on Dean at 2, just because it seems he's just not THAT good.

But surely they know we won't just use 9 & 11 to match but will look to trade out those picks to clubs with multiple 2nds for extra points and additional pick/s next year. No benefit to WC and they take the risk (albeit very low) that we don't match.

If WCE bid on Dean at 2 (they won't), they can keep him (temporarily).

I'd be happy to walk away with two top 15 picks and come back for Dean after WCE has paid for his development years.
It’s a mouthful, but we may have to rename our academy (temporarily) to:

The Peter Dean Father-Son - via West Coast Eagles - Academy

Until another team does a trade we weren't expecting
