Totally agree, its aimed at appeasing clubs like St Kilda who are the Flint Tropics of the competition and just making up the numbers.

Meanwhile the real problems remain: a lopsided fixture geared towards maximising revenues by giving the "big" clubs the best chance of success, whilst ensuring that the northern growth markets have sustained success by gifting them exclusive access to first round talent via their academies.
Appeased isn't quite how I'll feel if we fight our way into 7th and then have to re-justify our finals spot by playing a team that finished 10th while the other finalists are having a rest.

This is an overlooked aspect. Its not just "adding two finalists" its forcing clubs who have already won sufficient games to justify their finals berth to play off against a team that hasn't and give themselves an even worse chance of making the GF.

Its trash no matter which way I look at it.

So you’d have to win five finals matches to go all the way? Any sort of rest before that presumably wise if you can get it. Which I don’t mind much myself, you see that in any sport, but it potentially contradicts the original reason for bringing it in, and will make it extremely tough to win from seven up. Agree with ScrappyDo more about revenue than anything else. Someone’s walked into the boardroom and said why aren’t we making serious money and remaining on point that weekend!? Personally I don’t mind it and there will be some years where nine and ten deserve to have a crack at finals. I like the idea of a layered top four, top six, top ten with its own privileges. Seven and eight clearly the biggest loser. As a side note though not all change is good and acceptable in time, look at the sub rule.

Ummm I don't think 55 is Will Phillips

It looks like Billy McGee-Galimberti from our VFL team
Could be, they were calling him Billy, not Will. The photo Stav put up of Will Phillips looked similar to the no.55. As I dont know either player I said it looked like him.
Would be weird calling him Billy all day when his name has always been Will. Probably my mistake.

All good mate, appreciate your efforts. I'm only guessing too but I'm pretty sure it's Galimberti

To be fair to you, they look quite similar

Phillips is a lot more bulkier and more tanned though

Below is a picture of Galimberti (with longer hair) - I think it's a closer match to the guy in the video

Shorter hair so hard to see, looked more like Phillips but who really knows.

Anyone know of the times of any more sessions this week?
Flying in tomorrow so wouldn't mind heading down Thursday or Friday if they are running around.

Disagree, he looks perfectly suited to being an attacking wingman to me. Elite speed and endurance plus a knack for hitting the scoreboard. I think those attributes are wasted by making him an inside mid.

23 disposals 11 contested, 5 goals, 10 score involvements but only 1 clearance shows that he doesn't need to be played as an inside mid to have an impact
He can play both roles during a game..you need multiple CBA players to mix it with the big boys

I was just thinking with the gp on the same weekend as our open round game against Collingwood a heap of interstate visitors will probably want to go along for the spectacle of seeing an Aussie rules game at the G.
Would not be surprised if it’s a 100k sellout.
Could be at least 35000 neutrals at the game.

Not yet the finished product but our list is much better than last season
Where do you think we need most improvement to finish the product?
Injury management for one.
Midfield should improve, adding a Butters would be nice but I don’t think our sc can absorb that.
Fwds have been a big problem but the return of the King and Ro should improve that and delivery should be better.
A lot of shoulds there.
Kingy is the lynch pin to all this. Maybe add a tall forward???

One thing I noticed when flicking through the training photos posted by the club was just how many gun young players we have!

Can't remember the last time I had a similar feeling.
It's pretty exciting. Bringing in 4 guaranteed best 22 players in TDK, Flanders, JSOS and Ryan means there is massive competition for spots.

We have so many kids that could break out or take a massive step this year. Windy, Pou, Wilson, Owens, Tauru, Garcia and Boxshall to name a few.

If 2 or 3 of those improve another 10-15%, we really have a very deep squad.

This feels like a finals list.

If you are flying in Thursday, Friday would be the go. Ring the club on Thursday and they will give you all the info including time it starts.

I think ‘wild card’ is a bum steer too. Agree with Joff, Dillon is out of his depth. His communications around no free to air Saturday night and umpiring issues lacks transparency, and are spin more than genuine dialogue. He flounders a lot all the while putting up an “I know it all” front.

Its obvious they operate on a "throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" type attitude to running the league. As long as the gambling dollars continue to roll in they done give much of a shit about the stability or integrity of the game itself.

It also reeks of indecisiveness and short term planning. A big issue with growing the game overseas, which they have attempted countless times now, is that the rule set of the game are baffling to outsiders. We put up with it as weve grown with it and "get the vibe" so to speak but its unmarketable with so many grey areas.

But instead of spending a proper amount of time actually clarifying and adjusting rules to make the game easier to umpire and understand and then actually testing it in the VFL properly they just again, throw shit at the wall in the hopes of it making some sort of positive change.

If you finish 7th though, you haven't exactly put yourself in the best position to win a flag. I take the counter view, where the higher up the ladder you finish the bigger advantage you deserve.

The difference between 5 and 8 is actually pretty significant. One is scrapping to make finals, one is fighting for the double chance. In reality you are highly likely to end up with 2 VIC teams playing at the MCG round 1 of finals.

I am usually the first to critiicise the AFL, but this is 1 change I don't mind. It keeps more fans interested for longer, less dead rubber games towards the end of the year.

I hate the week off after the season. I have always found it bizarre.

Anyway, with 10 teams participating in finals we absolutely SHOULD be making it.
