Analysis 2025 Draft watch

I have Jevon slipping down into the 20’s purely for this reason. Didn’t rate Mattaes in his draft year as highly as others for the same reason. Their confidence reeks of self service rather than wanting team success
Yeah they don't scream 'team player' types. Haven't watched a tonne of Jevan this year due to injuries but watching Mattaes transition to AFL level I haven't loved his attitude in games when things aren't going his way.

Anyway, that's more about personality than anything and I don't personally know the kid. But in the same draft range I'd rather Lindsay, NHH, Barker, Pickett and others ahead of him.

I asked chatgpt what Carlton should do with pick 9 and 11.

  • Use Pick 9 to match for Harry Dean (father-son).

  • Use Pick 11 to select another first-round talent, ideally addressing tall forward or dynamic half-back/wing need.

  • If during pre-draft/trade negotiations a high value deal emerges (for either pick), consider trading Pick 11 (rather than Pick 9) for future first-round pick(s) + extra picks, provided the second-round talent still available is strong.

  • Maintain flexibility for the 2026/2027 drafts using the extra picks/future firsts to pursue more club-tied talent.

Maybe AI is coming for Austin's job?

Weird case were I know for sure some of the stuff I wrote was included in the data

Anybody who thinks Sullivan Robey is a great get should watch this:

Terrible is an understatement. Makes all the wrong calls, terrible disposal. Weak efforts. Maybe its one of his worst games but damn...

I could find the worst game Cripps has played and refer to that to say he can't kick, can't run, puts in weak efforts etc.

Does that mean Cripps is crap?

Watching one of his best games later on in the year you can see why he's rated so highly. Absolutely rapid improvement once he's among professional coaches. A lot more physical and he clearly realises that he's a lot stronger than everyone around him. No longer avoiding contact, he's doing the opposite. Also makes somewhat better choices with the ball. Still gets smothered more often than he should.

Good work ... now do a few of these for Harry Dean and send it to every club :)

Idk if its still on youtube but Dylan Clarke giving him a bath vs the Dons the week Bolton got the sack comes to mind.

11 touches and 2 clearances for the game ☠️
Yes, I'm sure Cripps made a mistake every time he got near the ball like Sullivan did. LOL

He pushes player managers and his own agenda the whole time - the fact that he works for the afl yet is a prime rumour and agenda pusher is a massive conflict of interest for me.

Sure...if the AFL were interested in anything other than revenue.

Pushing agenda and rumour generates discussion...discussion in turn generates airtime and clicks...airtime and clicks generate ads...ads generate revenue.

He is doing exactly what the AFL pay him to do.

I'm stuck at home with COVID so I'm just watching single game focus packages of the top players. I find it more informative than full season highlights where you only see the good stuff. I used to watch a lot of live under 18s back in the day but haven't bothered for many years. I realise that even these video don't give you the full picture like a live match does but its better than nothing.

So I'm just going to post my thoughts as I go on the current draft crop.

I really like Sam Grlj. He's never going to be a stoppage specialist in a good team but he'll be great on a wing or half back. Lovely movement in congestion, good disposal and a little bit of mongrel in him. I can see why Richmond like him. He'll need to improve his core strength at AFL level if he can.

I was struggling to find a good comparison for him when I was talking about him the other day… maybe someone like prime Andrew Lovett or Lewis Jetta .... a bit of Andrew Gaff?

You clearly went scouring for a gotcha moment.
There was still plenty to like in the video even if it wasn't one of his better games. Presents aggressively towards the ball and displayed clean hands often.

Gotta love draft week. 10 minutes of YouTube be makes you an expert.

Someone mentioned Kade Simpson once. Not far from it. More agile in contests than Kade.

Oh yeah you got me. Going for a gotcha moment on a kid who going to get drafted well before our first pick.

It was a terrible game, but as I pointed out later his improvement from that to his latter games was astonishing. Really impressive.

Then I don't really understand why you'd post something so scathing?

Every player has bad games, judging any player off a single performance seems a little bit obtuse.

Interesting that Twomey said if he makes it past Richmond he may end up falling to GWS' pick. Would be a steal for them at that range.

Well I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.

But I'll probably just keep on sharing my thoughts as I go both positive and negative. Feel free to ignore me.

Hurt my feelings? I have no attachment to Robey or any of the other players in this draft outside of Dean and Ison.

Just find it bizarre you'd ruthlessly pot a player based on one video on YouTube about him.

Really love Dovaston. He's about as readymade a player as you are going to find. Bust proof imo.

He's more than just a small forward as well. He's very good when getting up the ground, creating with his agility and speed.

What I like about him most is his quick disposal and decision making. He gets the ball away in a flash. One of the issues with judging u18 players is that the quality and pace of the footy is so far below AFL level. Players who look good dancing around skinny kids suddenly look third rate against elite professional athletes with bodies hardened by multiple preseasons. I'll have to watch more of him but I think this is going to be an issue for Duursma.

Anyway, this is why I love Dovaston so much. His quick, mostly accurate, disposal will make the transition to AFL footy really smooth. He's going to play round 1 in the right team and be a serious problem.
