And then they immediately went and got another one.

The exception to the rule

Still 2 key forwards. And it’s a bit different trading in a known quantity and hamstringing our draft choices because we need to replace Tex with one of 16 or 3 3rd rounders. It’s rampant stupidity to be drafting based on potential gaps in the current theoretical best 23. Just dumb.

Listening to Cal on gettable, and then reading his phantom draft leads me to believe he is going in fairly blind this draft. And after the first few picks, could have one of his worst ever hit rates.

Nothing against him, its a tough gig, but in years gone by he's seemed way more decisive by now about the order of the top 1-12 players.

I actually think this draft is going to be a fascinating watch, could go any direction.

I feel like there is a lot of dancing around the topic of how bad this draft is. That's what most people are saying without explicitly saying it

A rubbish draft crop is going to be much harder to predict, and there will be much more variance in opinion as pundits try to slot below average players into high draft positions

Several major red flags to me are 1) ranking a lot of SA players inside the first round, given SA players historically underperform their draft position; 2) the talk of several bewildering draft bolters including a 20-year-old SA small forward and 3) clubs really devaluing 2025 draft picks at the trade table

Has the feel that there will be some all time busts in this draft at very high picks

Might also be one of those drafts where some of the later picks end up being the best picks in the draft when looked back on

The problem with the draft and lack of quality is not the SA talent, it's the lack of Vic Metro talent. Given the watchers/ gurus are Vic metro APS heavy, this is compounded in the narrative.

Whether or not the SA talent is standard or exceptional is another question, but given the SA talent is being used as the 8-25 fodder, it would seem it's not an exceptional year of SA talent but rather a filler of the void created by Vic Metro mediocracy.

The real question is what is behind the derth of Vic Metro talent?

What if Essendon do give up 5 and 6 to get to pick 2?

I would think West Coast are more likely to take Sharp than Essendon
Surely in West Coast having Elijah Hewitt already so don't need Sharp as much as being made out? Hewitt, Reid, then Duursma pushing off the half back on the outside is the basis of a good midfield, there are other good players going around this year.

Reid is leaving in 2 years, there is no way he is staying long term.

I reckon that could be right

It's taken a while but I've kind of warmed up to this draft to the extent that I kind of wish we'd cut a bit harder into our list with Sholl and Jones etc to grab another couple of later picks. That could also just be that its a pretty SA heavy draft. The top end star quality might not be there but I think in the mid to later picks there will be some very handy players.

I'd only consider trading up with a realistic chance to land preferably Cumming but also Sharp, but I cant see either of them making it that far.

In terms of our natural picks, I'd probably take a punt on Barker with our first; hope that B.O.B sneaks through to our 2nd; and wrap up the night with Zane Peucker from WWT. He's one that I havent seen much written about in the lead up to the draft but was kind of expecting to see climb the rankings late.

Sholl and Jones obviously aren’t the answer but I’d rather have a crack at the 2026 draft, rather then having 2 years contract on a couple of absolutely crapshoot draftees and hindering next years draft with tight lists spot again

Maybe we’d be getting something for Jones off Tassie end of next year?

Reckon we’ll be going with 2 picks this year

I think there is a bit of Victorian bias because lots of interstate players are rated just as high if not higher and they lost the national carnival. It's the perfect draft for us to go hard and get a couple of really good South Australians IMO.

If he qualifies he qualifies, I don't think the AFL can deny it. It's just that I don't understand how he qualifies, clearly he's not metro right? It seems he's an bit of an outlier to the intention of the system.

Complete bullshit. Another horseshit move by the AFL to remove more fairness and integrity from the draft. **** you AFL.

Long way to go yet. How many players have projected as very high picks in their underage year only to fall off the pace somewhat in their draft year. This kid may well be no different or maybe he plateau. Time will tell.

Who cares, you pay a steep price for them now so it's not the free hit it used to be.
What you now don't want is them to finish bottom or even bottom 2 as the last thing you want is for them to getca pick in ahead of a cochrane bid and get 2 top ranked kids. But after that, yep they will have to pay a price in 1sts to get him
