Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

The family's Aboriginal heritage can be traced to the Ngunawal people, with the family over generations disconnecting from their cultural background.

The NGA program is supposedly there to encourage clubs to help develop players from diverse cultural backgrounds who may otherwise not have the opportunity.

The AFL and common sense rarely meet

Maybe we can just get Axel Walsh to proclaim he's a diehard WCE fan and wants to stay in WA due to family 'roots'?

Watching Gettable and I get the very clear impression that Twomey doesn’t really have a great line of sight to what West Coast are planning

Beyond the obvious of Duursma and CDT being the one, two punch at the top of the draft which has been the widely held belief for weeks he doesn’t offer much else on West Coast. That we’re probably going to bid on Uwland at pick 2 and maybe Dean after that is about the extent of it.

Pretty much the rest of his comments around West Coast are things that aren’t going to happen - no offer from Essendon for pick 2, no deal likely with Carlton for pick 9, Farrow won’t get to our third pick

A lot of talk about the likes of Taylor, Robey, Cumming, Farrow, Grlj, Sharp being looked at by Richmond, Essendon and Melbourne but not a single peep about us even contemplating any of those players - surely our recruiters aren’t that blinkered to not even be talking to that group. Twomey would have us believe otherwise

Then absolute donuts on who we might be looking at with pick 13 - not a single player discussed in that range was linked to West Coast

Clubs with picks just before and after pick 13 were linked to the following:

Hawthorn- Lindsay, Farrow
GWS- Farrow, Marsh, Taylor, Pickett, Nairn, Ludowyke, Grlj
Bulldogs- Lindsay, Dovaston, Taylor
Adelaide- Marsh, Thredgold, Taylor, Barker
Geelong- Lindsay, Taylor

It’s almost as if he forgot we have that pick

But it was what he said about one player in particular that got me thinking - Cameron Nairn (the kid who kicked 7 goals for SA against WA)

Was mentioned as a possibility for Melbourne with one of their two picks with the suggestion that clubs who rate him highly haven’t been talking about him much on the basis they think he might slip through

There’s been next to no discussion on him around these parts, possibly because most rankings have him around the mid 20’s mark. He’s also more of a high half forward type rather than a midfielder so not an immediate need as such

But, his relative obscurity and the fact Twomey doesn’t seem to have any inkling on who our target with pick 13 might be led me to wonder if Massey has been quietly working away on Nairn in the background

Running capacity, leading patterns and versatility are among his strengths so would suit what McQualter is trying to build

On face value he would seem to be a reach at what is likely to be pick 16 or so but in light of Twomey’s comments perhaps he isn’t

This is his Rookie Me Central profile

100% correct Keys.

Long post.
Absolutely has no idea who we will take apart from pick 1 Duursma imo also.

This tells me 2 things, 1 we have diverted draft chat/info/speculation to maximise our draft hand with if you want pick 2 you ned to come at us with someting to tempt us or don't come at all.
2, this means we are still having STRONG discussions with ESS about what they want, the player they want and what that will cost them.

Twomey is a big ESS fan and probably had some strong inside info/contacts that would feed him but the new crew are giving him SFA.

He can't get a read about what it would take to get pick 2 from us from an ESS perspective and will it take 2 & 13 for 5 & 6 or more when he was stating this same scenario weeks ago!!
Tells me we are VERY keen to do a deal with ESS, but you need to add some more for us to budge, add a F2nd or a F3rd and we can have a chat.

The no idea read on pick 13 is two fold, again he has no idea or links and WC are openly expressing since trade time that we are VERY keen to move up and get 3 top 10 picks and have put a massive amount of effort to get the draft hand we have eg. Allen FA pick, sold Ryan, sold Chesser, Starcevich deal to improve our hand.

Obviously behind closed doors the WC list management are driving harder deals and list management decisions to maximise are draft hand to improve.
I still think we are Duursma pick 1, trade 2 & 13 to ESS for 5 & 6 & F3rd.
ESS take CDT or Robey at pick 2.
WC take Sharp & Cumming at 5 & 6.

Keep our draft hand of 34, 41 for our NGA/FS's if they recieve a bids to match and if they don't or are later there is an opputunity for a late pick option for someone who slides, Curtin KPD.

Same as all these “NGAs” that grow up in the city and go to top private schools. Not what the system was designed for.

joke.

however, if they're the sort of family to push that hard for an NGA ruling, he's also the sort of kid who would just go home at the first opportunity anyway.

at least with the new bid-matching rules in place, carlton and port will have to pay up for these guns

No issue with someone discovering/exploring their Aboriginal heritage later in life than others. That’s not the issue here.

The issue is the AFL have had to rezone the kid just to get him in, and he plays for what looks to be an Adelaide Crows aligned NGA team in Centrals.

How that equates to Port having access is beyond me. Farcical stuff.

Port know Butters is leaving, they've gone to the AFL to ask for help and made sure Butters gets the red carpet rolled out upon his return to the motherland.

In order to make sure it happens they've made Cockrain an NGA so they get compensation.

Lots of happy stories.
Imagine getting this type of compo when you made a prelim just over 12 months ago.

Yeah but the Eagles got gifted a pick in the 30s and that’s ruined the competitive balance of the draft m8

Well if he's still guaranteed pick 1 come next year then who cares as we won't be bottom of the ladder.
Assume we finish 2nd last.

If he's not an NGA then last place takes Cochrane and we get the next best player.

However, now that he's NGA last place bids and Port take Cochrane.
Last place then chooses another player.

We have now missed out on the other player and choose the 3rd best player instead.

So yes it still impacts us (especially with Carlton having potential top 3 players as F/S).
