At the end of the day is Dean worth pick 9 and 11 in isolation.

For me yes. Have you watched Deans year? But you have overly simplified the logic. It's not just Dean. We get the extra points to know we can secure Ison also without going into deficit (critical for Cody). Also, we get a (likely early) F2.

So yes, worth it for me!

Ultimately, with GW at the club now overseeing everything, we are not going to get this wrong

If these deals go through as rumoured above is it pretty much 9 + 11 (which in reality are probably 12 + 14 with other bids expected) for Dean, Ison and North's 2026 2nd? Or am I missing something in the deal?
Surely there will be points left over for another pick this year depending on when the bids come in

Not all good news. Its also sounds really likely WC bids on Dean at 3 🤣.

That would explain us giving up on an F1 or a pick slide. Just need points now. If we get an F2 on top its a bonus.
lnteresting to know if West Coast are calling Austin's bluff here, Dean has been rated 6-12 most of the season not sure on what basis he is number 2 now, not sure paying multiple 1st round picks in consecutive years is sustainable to build a rounded list when we are clearly in rebuild mode.

Depends on when the bids come I guess. But if we end up with something we might prefer to move it into next year rather than take a 3rd round pick or something and fill up a list spot

That’s why Austin shouldn’t do those trades until West Coast or Richmond officially bid on Dean.

This is a disappointing result but not much we can do about it.

It would've been great to have two firsts to build upon but it is what it is.

Have to say that there's no chance in hell these draft changes would've been made if Collingwood or Geelong had a top father son this year. The AFL is so crooked.

Doing the maths if we get picks 21,25,27,30 from Roos and Dons for 9+11 and Eagles bid at 3 on Dean we can match at 24 for Ison.

If we dont give Dons 43 or get 46 from the Roos that gives us another 300 approx points to play with meaning we can match a pick in the late teens. Keep both and we can match Ison in the early teens.

Thats once picks are swallowed up ect.

Noting that it's not 9 and 11 for one player, the short answer is yes.

Jimmae and your idea that we allow Harry to swing is a choice that would have ramifications beyond the draft. It's a culture killer. It has Cody and other father sons or NGAs think twice before committing to the club. It says we don't honour an agreement.

And for what? To win the draft? To pick up a Dovaston or Greaves or any number of players who won't be as good as Dean? (yes, I know Jimmae doesn't rate him. He's about the only one I've seen).

It's a crap situation that they are trying to make the best of. But it's a taste of what next year will be like and then 2027 when our picks are diluted.

Seriously don't believe that do you? Tin foil hat type of stuff.....

Doesn't Jimmae rate Dean? How many key defenders taken early (top10) in the draft end up being good AFL footballers? Weitering is the only one that comes to mind.

There are a few ways to look at it. Naughton was drafted as someone who could play both ends, and Gibcus looks like he’ll be a good player if he can stay injury-free – the same applies to Zach Reid. I also think this is about the bigger picture of what we’re trying to build: good-quality players who believe in our club/direction. With Dean, Ison and Walker coming through, I’m genuinely looking forward to the future. Yes, alot KP miss but so do a lot of mids.

I’m not going to go through the draft to prove you right or wrong. I concede the point.

It’s easy being a mercenary on BigFooty when you haven’t been dealing with the Dean family for years and have made private and public promises that we would pick up Harry. To then turn around and say, yeah nah because Harry is a little bit too good and has captured the interest of other clubs is a heel move. I’d be ashamed of the club if they did it.

Yes, we are being held to ransom. But that’s the way the draft in 2025 works and clubs will do what they can to screw an oppo. We’re going to be held to ransom next year as well.

Pretty much. Thats probably about fair value tbh so we arent disadvantaged. But it would mean we've essentially got no benefit from the fs/academy rules. Paying 100c on the $.

Ask Austin why he traded JSOS compensation selection.
In a deal that gave us a points surplus. Then those later picks were thrown back in the Charlie deal which netted us 3 1sts. The deal made a lot of sense. Still doesn't change the fact we are not giving 9 and 11 for Dean as you are claiming.

About this proposed trade.

Mhttps://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/carlton-agrees-to-trade-picks-9-and-11-to-essendon-and-north-melbourne-ahead-of-expected-west-coast-bid-on-harry-dean/news-story/823ba623ba1987c9236d178dcbcec6a8

West Coast has been a big fan of Dean throughout the year and some recruiters have suggested that they could mount a case for the Murray Bushrangers defender to be the No. 1 pick this year.

Carlton would also retain picks 43 and 54 in this year’s draft, while banking some more draft points in 2026 to help match another early bid on father-son prospect Cody Walker.

This was before the latest draft changes though. Things change. Giving up two top 11 draft picks for an unproven AFL player is fraught with danger.

Are you blind? If you believe otherwise you aren't paying attention.

Collingwood getting a home game for free in opening round for no apparent reason would be another recent example of the favouritism.
