Not sure why jim is up on a pedestal around here. No offence but more often than not the bloke is the reverse Midas touch....letting Dean out to hang, terrible call
I think any good discussion site requires a devil’s advocate or two. Jimmae and Michael Jezz are people I have been reading on fan sites for the best part of 20 years.

Do they get everything right? No. Do I get everything right? Not much. So I am pretty much on level with them there.

What I think both of them frequently do is offer an alternative position. They do it respectfully and offer reasons for their positions. They both come across as passionate Carlton people. And if we ever manage to be up there on the premiership dais again, they will be celebrating with the rest of us.

I wouldn’t be leaving Harry Dean for another side to pick up either. But good on Jimmae for offering it up as a possibility.

Trading him now means the first round picks we get are effectively useless.

This is a strange way to look at it. We're getting Dean and Walker. Holding high draft picks is the best way to acquire points because it let's you get extra points by sliding back - which is what we're doing by the looks.

Overall we are getting top 3 ranked players 3 years in a row whilst finishing nowhere near the bottom 3. This is good luck and good management.

I have no idea how port will get Cochrane if he goes 1 next year. I don't see how they could acquire the points without losing butters.

In a deal that gave us a points surplus. Then those later picks were thrown back in the Charlie deal which netted us 3 1sts. The deal made a lot of sense. Still doesn't change the fact we are not giving 9 and 11 for Dean as you are claiming.
No it doesn’t make sense. Charlie’ “three first rounders are pick 11 one in the mid 20’s and one mid 30’s. Why the heck did we give back two second rounders we just did poorly out of the Curnow trade and giving up the Silvagni pick, seriously we outsmarted ourselves and make some poor deals.

So will all our picks be used on just Dean and Ison or are we able to draft another player as well?

When you match your used picks move to the back of the draft, you are able to fill your list.

However, it’s looking like we’ll be holding 2 spots open for the SSP, rather than 1.

Where are you getting one in the mid 20s and one in the mid 30s from?

You don’t seem to understand how this works.

We wil always be able to draft a third player, but it will depend on where the bids come with what pick.

If the suggested trades are right I would guess that we will probably have a pick in the 30's to use

Giving up 19 gave us 11 in a deal with a points surplus our way. And mid 20s and mid 30s? Come on now.

The real debate will be had much later. Was Dean's career better than farrow+Lindsay (for example) combined?
I don't know the answer. I'm just asking the questions. Is giving up two top draft picks for a kid who hasn't played any senior AFL football risky list management?
We won't know the answer for a few years at least. But we're going to end up doing this over a 3 year period.

That would be decent, although often early on, all parts of the trade dont get reported.
What is the logic of splitting if Dean is bid on early? We have to pay, and any remainder points come in at the closest pick value anyway? Makes no sense unless we get a lot more points.

As it stands right now a 193cm key defender who can intercept mark and kick at 90% is pretty hard to pass up given he's not only top 6 rated - he is also an exact fit for one of our more obvious list requirements.

Walker - speedy elite mid - also an exact fit for our slow midfield.

In any case it's pretty hard to pass up the chance to get a top 3 rated player in the draft at any time. That is where the superstars generally come from.

What's it costing us in draft picks? Ask yourself the question instead of being obsessed with points.

Who cares about the picks? We appear to be clear on what we are doing in this draft. Getting Deam and Ison. That's it. Whether its 9 and 11 or 5 second round picks or whatever it ends up, then so be it.

Yeah we'd only trade if it was for more points.

E.g. The pick 20 trade with Hawthorn gave us pick 36 for free essentially. Dawks were desperate for Merrett at the time and thought #20 would help.

The rumoured ess trade gives us pick 28 for free (in points value).

Why in the hell would we do that? For a start Pick 9 is worth 101 points more than 21 & 27 before you even get into the potential worth on draft night. If we are going to split an early 1st rounder I'd hope we would do a lot better than that.

AND, I'd want to make sure that deal got done AFTER * had used their first 2 picks or else they could bid on Dean and shaft us Royally.
Pretty sure that would be part of the deal ie don’t bid on dean
