and even they realised they half fluked it.

Brisbane’s second key forward in last years GF stands at 191cm. 2 key forwards only, 194cm and 191cm contributed 1.2 and 19 disposals. I guess they fluked it too. But we’re the geniuses with our 3 key forwards and glacial forward defensive action.

Not great news.

Essendon and North trading up to take 9 and 11 pushes our pick down as they won’t get swallowed up by a Dean bid.

Clubs should not be able to trade out their natural first rounder and then match a bid in that round. Maybe an exemption for their first rounder in 2 years. But not this and next, the onus should be on them to hold those picks just in case the player goes in those rounds. Maybe add an exemption if the pick has been traded for a player. But trading back and out of drafts purely to avoid paying a fair price shouldn’t be allowed.

I'm not entirely sold on that narrative. It's a weak Coates league this year - where most of the draft watchers who shape the narrative focus. It does look a lot more shallow - especially compared to last year - but is the top 20 really weak or is it just that less than half are Victorian?

The advantage of that narrative, is that trading in or up will be cheaper than normal - so potentially Carlton's 9 for next year's 1st could be a feasible deal. Or even 9 & 11 for 16, 48 and 2026 1st. Remember next year we'll also have access to 2027 & 2028 1sts. Can keep kicking that can down the road like Melbourne have done to keep a solid supply of 1st round talent coming in.

Issue with that is 9 & 11 will be 12 & 14 and with Sharp and Cumming likely gone, who exactly are we trading up for? While I like guys like Farrow and Dovaston, if we're throwing all the chips in, feel we need a bonafide mid, not a 'might be a mid' player.

This all may be moot though, if a bid for Dean comes later in the top 10, Blues probably just absorb it, 11 slides back and they take a second 1st rd pick.
Has anyone gone back to measure the pre-draft talk of strong drafts / weak drafts and whether these estimations turn out to be on the money?

I'd have all of Riley Onley, Liam Hetherton amd Taj Murray ahead of him with our 2nd and 3rd pick but no problems at all taking him at that point. though preferably with our 3rd pick.

Draft hopeful Cody Curtin on dispelling doubts and his brotherly bond with Adelaide young gun Dan

The Crows hold picks 48, 55 and 64 later in the draft – which will move in considerably after bids for club-tied prospect are matched – and are among the clubs to express interest, along with St Kilda and Geelong.

Landing at West Lakes would be a fairytale.

“That’d be a dream come true again to get to play with your older brother, and especially on a big stage like that at Adelaide Oval,” Cody said.

“I’ve spoken with Adelaide a couple times. But obviously just keeping my options open to anywhere.

“Anything’s a possibility. I just want to hear my name get called out.”
After sliding down draft boards, Cody Curtin has mounted a late surge thanks to a remarkable grand final performance. And it could all lead to a reunion with his brother Daniel at the Crows.
As Dan Curtin’s breakout season with Adelaide came to an abrupt end in the AFL finals series, his younger brother Cody was out to prove himself.
Identified as a top prospect from a fair way out just like Dan in 2023, Cody had an admittedly indifferent draft year to that point and had slid down draft boards.

A 200 centimetre marking forward who has also played ruck and in defence, Cody dominated games for Claremont and Western Australia but would go missing in others, with recruiters questioning his speed, workrate and consistency.
However, that was a mere curtain raiser for his impressive 2km time trial at the draft combine, dispelling doubts with a 6min 24 second run.

Cody also improved his speed and agility tests, which he had been focusing on throughout the year.

“I’ve always had endurance running as one of the things that has been a good strength for me,” Cody said.

“But knowing that a lot of people sort of doubt my ability to work around the ground as a bigger guy, it was sort of something that I really wanted to prove to clubs that I’m able to do.

“They don’t think it is lack of ability to be able to, so they just wanted to see me prove myself in the 2k, which I think I did.

I'm thinking that we have worked out that the player we were hoping to get with pick 9 or 11 will most likely be gone by then so decided it wasn't worth trading up.
I'd pay a fair bit to get Cumming, but we'd need to get hold of one of Essendon's picks. Nobody's willing to give up a future first for pick 9, so a future first and 16 for 5 might get it done. If not, give some more.

Sam Cumming's draft year SANFL form (omitting the final game where he got injured after 1 kick) looks pretty good against recent top end picks:

Final pick only for me.

Love the fact he came out and improved/worked on his running, obviously hungry for a chance.

I thought he was much better last year as a defender, that's what got him into the AFL Academy and projected him as 1st round contender at that stage. Was reading the play, coming off his man and intercepting.

We must have some interest if we've been in recent contact.

How does Cumming compare at the Nationals level with those players?

That's way way more important than SANFL League where prospective draftees get limited opportunities in their favoured positions.

Horne-Francis and NWM didn't get the chance due to COVID, but Cumming looks fine against the rest:

Sharp dominates the U18 stats, but how much of that is down to man-child status, as he didn't translate to men's football like Rankine, Draper, Cumming and Rozee.

I like to see how draftees go in the SANFL, because it takes away any advantage from early development. But it probably advantages the guys who play a better outside game than the bulls.

A mix of both is probably a good guide.

I think Cumming is a step below the others, but well worth trading 2 late firsts for. Also fits a need. Two late firsts gets you a couple of role players, or a potential starting mid by 2028/29.

Sharp translated fine to senior footy, only have to look at his underage finals matches in 2024. Issue with raw numbers is the role he was given and the style that Paul Thomas employs. Very much a low possession brand, kick long to forwards.

Put up decent numbers against the VFL opposition. He's risen to every level he's been exposed to and that will continue at AFL level.

I'd be happy using 2 firsts to get Sharp too.

I don’t think 16 and our F1 gets pick 5

Teams seem to like the first 5-7 natural picks but absolutely no value in it after that

Make no doubt if Sharp or Cumming is there at 9, we’ll be going hard for that pick but think it’s next to no chance unfortunately
