Rookie Me Central 2025 Draft Guide

Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Last edited by a moderator:
News over the weekend of the Carlton/Essendon/Nth Melbourne trade has made me do my second mock draft and potentially final if there’s no other surprises or late news.

For a reminder these were the eagles picks in the first mock

Pick 1 - Willem Duursma

Pick 3 - (after Uwland bid) Dyson Sharp

Pick 13 - (after trading up with Carlton) Sam Grlj

The only pick that has stayed the same is the first one which is still Willem Duursma, can’t wait to see him over west in the blue and gold.

Our next two picks in the first round:
Pick 3 - (after Uwland bid) Cooper Duff-Tytler

Pick 17 - Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves

I’m starting to come to the fact we are most likely selecting CDT with pick 3 which still is not a bad thing at all. Averaging 14.5 disposals along 14 hitouts in 4 games during the carnival and 20.4 disposals and a goal from 5 games in the talent league he’s no stranger to making an impact. Combine results were incredible for his size that shows he becomes another midfielder when the ball hits the deck. He’s very versatile that he can be put anywhere and slot straight in knowing he has the height but also the agility and craft means he will be a key cog in the team.

Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves comes in at pick 17 and it was not easy selecting this pick let alone the ones before it. Such an up and down season for him means you just don’t know what it’ll be at a consistent level but his best is definitely up there. His best game in the champs came against WA where he almost won it off his booth with 4 goals and 18 touches as he averaged 12 and 1.5 goals in 4 games while in the talent league he went one better against GWV Rebels with 29 disposals and 5 goals as he averaged 16.3 disposals and 1.5 goals in 11 games. He’s a damaging target up forward where he stands 186cm that can most certainly go through the midfield with a bit of consistency and size.

I’m definitely not a draft expert, just a nerd like so many others who has a love for the draft news and prospects throughout the season. My top 25 is far from perfect but hopefully it can get a few right! IMG_4550.jpeg

Huh? If he goes at pick 2 how would we find this out?
I know we haven't been good for quite a while but we are actually a multi-million dollar football club, so if we take him at 2 there's a fair chance plenty of other teams would have as well.
We'll know more than all the guessing that everyone is doing now at any rate.

i find it humourous that we have 1 and 2 but we get 2 hybrid utilities instead of pure mids
It's the nature of this draft - If the top rated talent/tier is that type of player - So be it.

I'm of the opinion that you take the highest rated talent, especially with top 5 picks.

I said that on here a few weeks ago. That's just the quirk of the draft year on year, unfortunately. The 'best talents' this year aren't the mids. We'll hopefully take the best two kids available from the open pool and move on. This is a multi-year rebuild so this ain't getting fixed in one hit.

Correct, and its because the club refuses to draft or develop proper inside mids barring Reid

Willing to play defenders utilities and half forward flankers in there and then wonder why the midfield is in the state it's in

Still have the goofys calling for McCarthy and Hough to go in the midfield next year along with a stringbean utility in Duursma like they are going to be the difference

How remiss of me i forgot the GOAT D.Rob and pies delist fodder Craig Mcrae are en route to fix the midfield

DRob and Finn would probably get midfield opportunities in lesser teams than Bris and Collingwood midfields so not complete nuffies in the role and will be handy pickups if they are hungry to succeed with this AFL lifeline ..

I'm a sharp believer again.

Maybe that's it hasn't leaked as to who we are picking with 1 and 2.

We told harley pick 1 early on we are into him with that pre draft phone call.

**** you wce. I still won't be tuning into draft day if Cal mentions CDT Pick 2 in his last phantom draft. I was meant to bake a cake. I for one am not an bystander for the destruction of this footy club
Make it a chocolate lava cake, that way, both you and the cake can melt from within.

Also, if anyone’s preferred selection isn’t taken by the club (as will be the case for plenty of people), don’t jump on the clubs socials and blast the player on their ‘welcome’ posts.
It’s the last thing they, their family or friends want to see on potentially the best day of their life. would be a terrible way for the player to start their career, likely on the other side of the country.
Send your anger to the club via a call or email, don’t be a flog.

Cheers 🍻

I love the idea that a bunch of multi-million dollar football clubs and professional talent evaluators who have ranked CDT as one of the top 5 prospects in this draft have somehow missed the fact that he can’t jump, can’t kick straight and has stone hands.

Same multi million dollar clubs and pro talent evaluators that oversaw the following

James Hird pick 79
Corey Enright pick 47
Dane Swan pick 58
Sam Mitchell pick 36
Mark Blicaves pick 54 rookie draft
Robbie Gray pick 55
Taylor Walker pick 75
Harris Andrews pick 61
Nick Larkey pick 73
Lachie Neale pick 58
Jeremy McGovern pick 44 rookie draft
Chris Grant pick 105
Brian Lake pick 71
Brent Harvey pick 47
Adam Goodes pick 43
Dean Kemp pick 117
Matt Scarlett pick 45
Gary Ablett Jr pick 40
Dean Cox pick 28 rookie draft
Luke Breust pick 47

If you're going back to 20+ years ago, I'm not sure you're going to have too much luck backing up your point.

Point is clubs and recruiters are not infallible judges of talent, whether last year or 20 years ago.
Well, the point kinda is that they are way better today than they were 20+ years ago, going from the fact that your most recent example in that list is Nick Larkey.

That list is also just a few of the biggest steals, conversely the list of duds taken in the top 10 would be silly to post given its length and breadth.

What evidence is there to suggest recruiters are better now than an arbitrary time from the past?

There's some deluded people on here who like to post trades that work for us but don't work at all for the team we'd be trading with

Liked this post even though I sometimes resemble it
