Analysis 2025 Draft watch

As I've said previously, we've heard for months now that WCE have Dean in the top handful this year. Even before we acquired the picks from the Curnow trade.

Their 'experts' rate him higher than others, that's really all that matters.
If Austin had known Dean would have been bid on by West Coast a month ago and Ison early 20's pretty sure he would left a couple,of picks in the 30's to deal with the bids as Dean has been rated 6-10 until the last few weeks & had the capacity to bring in another player eg Lindsay.

I would be a bit disappointed if this is how it plays out, I think Dean and ISON are worthy of their draft range but we aren’t addressing our lost needs aggressively enough imo.

It won’t take much more to make me happy, if we get a pick in the 20s before ISON or if we end up with a pick in the 40s after him, I’ll think we have done a good job, provided that pick addresses a need, KPF or small forward.

Really?

Depth was No1 issue and we went hard and addressed it
We need run through middle and have Jagga coming back and deliberately chased Chesser for this reason
lacked forward craft and got Ainsworth & Hayward
Added a KPD (needed)
Need a KPF but how and who?
Development was major issue and we have addressed that

We now have a heap of young talent that could easily fill most issues we have. Gives us 12 months to assess and we then have a heap of picks (will add Walker) over next two years to really complete list

I am really not sure given options and system what more we could have done?

Ison seems a big lad that moves well; shame he didn’t test at the Combine (guessing the ‘leg injury’ wasn’t serious).

I can’t really see anyone on our list he is analogous with - any of our more astute draft watchers think he’ll be ready enough to push for a debut in 26?

Can't address all the issues in one off season mate...

Need to be patient.

I think he will play very very early. Potentially Opening Round.

I think it depends on who's available at the pick, although I'm almost certain that at least one of 43 or 54, will be going back Essendon's way. Doubt we keep both those picks. Apparently, the Roos might chuck in 46 with their deal though.
Yep, totally agree with that. I can see it falling something like:

North >> 25, 46, f2 >> Carlton >> 11, 54 >> North
Essendon >> 21, 27, 30 >> Carlton >> 9, 46 >> Essendon

I'm about to plug those into the Pommy Draft thingy and see where that leaves us.

By the way, I'm loving the arguments and melts here today - big cheerio to all the opposition supporters reading them 😘

I've seen a little bit but people at club are really excited. Talent wise Top 10. Reminds me of a mix of Pendles and Bont the way he moves and plays.

His is a big unit with great vision and a lovely left foot. Feeling is he will really improve in AFL system. Just starting to mature

Only time will tell but looks good

Personally I'd be surprised if he didn't earn a debut next season. 192cm smooth moving mid/fwd who can run, kick and plays with aggression, I think he's going to be a steal for us if he's bid on in the 20s.

Maybe he already knew and thats why we held out for Sydney 2027F1?

I caught up with one of the development coaches from the Oakleigh Chargers last week - lovely bloke, and it's great to hear the enjoyment when some of the players he's helped develop are a good chance to be drafted, like a proud father. They've got a few this year as well.

Anyway, had a brief chat with him about Jack Ison. Said he's a lovely kid, very quiet - but in terms of footy, good natural skills and is also strong overhead which is something that doesn't get mentioned a lot. Said he'd be a good asset.

Also spoke to him about Jagga (also an ex Charger) - shook his head and said that his ceiling could be anything. Said he caught up with Pitto during the year (another ex-Charger) who told him that what Jagga was doing last pre-season was mind blowing - no one could lay a hand on him.

Moves a little like Pendlebury, but I've personally got some slight knocks on his tank and read as he got an easy ride in terms of running patterns when he did accumulate in late season games after taking time off.

Skills are fantastic by foot so he barely needs to think once he has it, but I question how much ball he's going to win at AFL level for now, both on the inside and the outside. I have 28 players ahead of him on a measure of talent and production.

Matty411. I know right. People need to just talk about the topic and let people have their opinion. Why are people having a go at others ? I dont get it. Yep start the draft so we can stop wondering. And hopefully discuss our shiny new players.

Seriously who Gives a F
If we end up with Dean and Ison and a particular player we want that's expected to go in the 30s or 40s we end up with the best defender (Dean) in the draft and a talented player (Ison) who come on really late in the season
And in a really weak draft. Duursma wouldn't be top 10 next yr
We get the number 1 pick Jagga Smith this yr and Cody Walker next 💪

What more could we do?

If they weren't F/S or Academy and we got them with normal picks I am sure most would be happy. Still two very good players in a poor draft nd we will still bring in two more players that will likely be more mature and ready to play if needed

We now have a very young list
No problem with youth. Enough of our kids have decent grounding already. We are better served than we were last season.
Ollie, Cowan, Lord, Motlop and counting Chesser all seasoned. Skull, Moir, Carroll good to go (as is HOF after injury). Lucas and Billy have had a taste.

Confident Jagga will be game ready (Rising Star candidate), Ben Campo a robust kid coping with big bodies in twos (almost leader of pack year 1), just leaves Charleson “uncapped” along with Dean and Ison. Leaving the Irish boys out of calculations for now, but would not surprise if both step up dramatically next season.
