Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Yeah I know it’s an easy thing to say, but I am surprised at the “they’ll bid on Uwland and Dean then take CDT” chat on most of the mocks. Surely just clear the decks of the next few guys too that every expects Richmond to bid on (Annable etc)

Happily take Pick 1 and Pick 5* by the time we’ve bid on a bunch of people and deleted the middle order of the draft entirely.
Yeah don’t understand why it’s not consensus that we’re bidding on all 4 given it helps us match our own bids and brings all our other picks in regardless, as well as making a mockery of the whole system.

No risk of any of them not matching and I’m sure we’d be happy with all 4 players anyway.

9 because there is intel Farrow might not be there at 13. If we have a hard on for Farrow 13 to 9 gets Farrow.

Woweeee so dons are preparing a bid. Excellent

Remember it is very apparent if we have a hardon for someone we will move heaven to get them. Think Bo Allan.
Agree but also we have B Allan sitting there who had a big interupted season in 2025, this is why I don't see this playing out for Farrow.
At worst B Allan is a great HB and attacking type at best he is another balanced midfield rotation or outside wing/mid.

WC are after different players imo.
Clearly decided Duursma has placed himself at number 1 so we will take him as the upside is too hard to ignore.
Then we have been positioning ourselves for the best inside and balanced mids with all the work thats been done this trade/drat season.

WC are taking away Duursma/Sharp/Cumming in the 1st round imo.

Does the needle change with Bombers getting pick 9 in an offer for 2? I think the likelihood of a trade for 1 is remote.

As it likely stands post Carlton sell off: -
Eagles - 1 2 13 34
Bombers - 5 6 9
Tigers - 3 4 38

Big picture stuff: -
  • between us, we have 7 top 10 picks and another early teens R1
  • all three clubs would like to have 2 top 10 picks with one of them as very pointy to get their top realistic target. Bombers at 5 is bit further back than they like.
  • Tigers have openly stated they would look at a suitable slide back. They look to have narrowed in on Cumming at 3 but they have 3 other players (Farrow, X Taylor, Robey) at 4 and also love Grlj but think he could slide passed Melbourne.

Without going into the exacts of the deals as this normally bring out the worst in the discussion, there are three possible trades that I now see as a result of having 9

1. Bombers trading up to 2 for CDT and giving back 6+9. Bombers would probably want something back later.
Bombers draft hand is 2 5 and stuff later
Eagles hand is 1 6 9 13 with the ability to sell 13 forward or split for points

2. Bombers add to the 5+6 offer that was not enough for 2+13. Loads of options and I'd be happy to make it a future 2026 value. Say their F2 for our F3
Bombers draft hand is 2 9 13 and stuff later
Eagles hand is 1 5 6 with added Future value

3. A mega deal with Tigers/Bomber/Eagles whereby
a) Eagles take to the draft 1+4+5
b) Tigers take to the draft 3+9+13
c) Bombers take to the draft 2+6+later picks

Not trying to balance the complete deals above. Also not that keen on hearing it should be 3 not 4, or no way its 5 it should be 6.

It is important to think out what each club gives up and what they get.

Likely outcome if the mega trade happens (ignoring club tied)
1 Eagles = Duursma
2 Bombers = CDT
3 Tigers = Robey
4 Eagles = Cumming
5 Eagles = Sharp
6 Bombers = XTaylor or Farrow
7 Dees = XTaylor or Farrow or Schubert
8 Dees = Nairn is the latest news or could be Schubert
9 Tigers = Grlj
10 Hawks = Lindsay
11 Norf = Dovaston
12 GWS = Pickett is gaining voice
13 Tigers = O Taylor

So is it a totally Tin Foil Hat conspiracy that:

We have told the Dons we will bid on Dean at 3, to help them to get pick 9 off Carlton.
Then they would be able to trade 5 and 6 for 2 and 13 but still have 2 top 10 picks.

Put it this way - the later a bid comes for Dean, the less incentive there is for Carlton to trade pick 9 and/or 11 for points. So any club wanting to target pick 9 would be hoping for an early bid

That doesn’t mean there’s any conspiracy other than to say Essendon would have a fairly good idea what they’d need for West Coast to trade pick 2 and going after pick 9 may or may not assist. If it doesn’t then picks 5,6,9 is a pretty tidy draft hand

He’s now a Port NGA
How?

The AFL are the most inept organisation there is, Port has done nothing for his development. A year from his draft suddenly he is linked to Port academy.

Between Walker and Cochrane I hope they dont come out to be the best kid come 2026 but high enough to absolutely **** with their trade/drafting strategy.

This is where your under rating CDT (and overrating Sharp) reveals itself.

You don’t settle for a “10% premium” for the gulf in upside between CDT and Sharp.
Hard agree. Can't say I'm a fan of all those spruiking 2 & 13 for 5 & 6 as a good deal.

I think 2 for 6 & 9 is what we should be demanding and if Bombers aren't keen, take CDT at 2.

Strange as this sounds, I don’t think Allan gets in to this team as a HB.

He’s not displacing any of Duggan, Starc, Hough, Ginbey anytime soon. Let alone, Baker if plays there.

Or perhaps, just perhaps, he doesn't want everyone to know his entire plan, so he's not laying it out in detail for consumption on the public airwaves.

You might have to say a thought out loud for it to happen, but that doesn't mean everyone has that problem.
Jeez I hope he doesn’t do that before he goes for a wenk.

It's not that tin foily. It was reported early on that we wanted an extra top 10 pick and we couldn't get it. It is in Essendon's best interests to keep their mouths shut and play along.

Thanks for reminding me where "Lockwooood" was from.

5 + 6 for 2 + 13. Bombers have secured 9 from Carlton in this scenario so they are more open to trading us 5 and 6.

1. Duursma (WCE)
2. Uwland (GC bid match)
3. Duff-Tytler (ESS)
4. Dean (CARL match)
4. Annable (BRIS match)
5. Patterson (GC match)
6. Robey (RICH)
7. Cumming (RICH)
8. Sharp (WCE)
9. Farrow (WCE)
10. Taylor (MELB)
11. Grlj (MELB)
13. Dovaston (ESS)
more likely to offer 6 and 9.

The interview with Clarke this morning went as expected - straight bat, didn’t rule anything out and didn’t commit to anything.

However, one tidbit that I found interesting was when he was asked about bidding on the NGA’s. He went on his usual spiel about bidding based on our ranks but he also said that bidding can also impact (positively) what we want to do later in the draft. I wonder if he is referring to our Pick 34 coming in or if Jai Murray and/or Addinsall are targets for us at Pick 13.

Of course, he could have also just been waffling and meant absolutely nothing by it…
