It was a disappointing result and the performance wasn’t great, but some of the overreactions are a bit much.

The XI named told you everything they thought about the game heading in and what the broader objectives might’ve been.

The sky isn’t falling. Bemoaning that we shouldn’t have debuted players in such an important game is moronic IMO.

How is it moronic? It was an important game. A chance to get a better seed for the world cup and he plays debutants. The mindset he employed was weak. Not out to win. That speaks volumes about the coach.

Drew.
Only won on penalties.

Have faced Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, Chile Peru (in World Cup 2018) since 2005. Don’t think Australia has even got 50% possession against any of those countries.

Just grateful Australia are in Asian qualifying and not South America. No way in hell would Australia even manage to get 8-10th best team. It’s ridiculous how much talent and intense it is over there.
How would they have fared coming to Australia in past tournaments though. We were good enough to beat Uruguay twice in 2001 and 2005 at home. Drew with Argentina in 1993. This squad agreed looks terrible but we've done OK on home soil and also put in some respectable showings at the World Cup.

Socceroos get one of the big Euro powers at next years World Cup and I sense a 4-0 German drubbing (2010 World Cup), Spain 3-0 drubbing (2014 World Cup), France 4-1 drubbing (2022 World Cup). Squad feels pass mark is to get to the Round of 32, Round of 16 would be a major achievement, anything more would be 'miraculous' achievement levels and best ever.

I dont believe having more possession should be judged on a team, its what you do off the ball that counts as much.

South American teams dont tend to go for the kill with their oppositions at World Cups.

This World Cup is huge for player movement, as with an expanded World Cup, there is a good chance we see a plethora of African talent , in the top leagues on a more regular basis- if there wasn't already. eg Premier League, Ligue 1. For the African countries there have always been fluctuating on the global scene mainly due to their 5 allocations at every World Cup. Have a disaster World Cup and we are probably banking on selecting players from : English Championship, A-League, English League One, 6th-10th best leagues in Europe, MLS, and leagues in Asia. It is what it is, the footballing landscape has got more competitive. Can only dream and envisage the days of 2005 when the Socceroos team had a plethora of EPL talent and Top 5 Euro leagues to back on.

Yep a top euro team would destroy us.

Every game is important. This was a friendly.

Should we also not blood players through qualifying campaigns?

When exactly do you think young players and players vying for a spot in a World Cup squad should be given an opportunity?

Pot 2 would have been nice but we probably needed everything to go our way - including multiple other results - to get there.

To suggest the coach didn’t want to win the game is just doubling down on stupidity. Of course he wanted to win.

Agree. The team qualified months ago. Others are still in the playoffs. This is a fantastic opportunity to blood and see the young players’ talent and resilience.
Have played 3 matches in USA/Canada now. Building that experience

So why do Brazil and Senegal field sides that are close to their full strength in the friendly at the Emirates this weekend?

I kind of think putting in a young team to look to get experience is a bit of a cop out excuse.

This was Brazils and Senegals XI for a bit of context:

If you want to blood youngsters, put them in the U21's or some tournament like that.

They did. What’s your point?

Look at the Brazilian XI from their friendly against Japan in the last international window.

A keeper on debut and a defensive unit with fewer than 20 caps between the 4 of them.

If you’re going to stress the importance of context, how about actually providing the context rather than cherry picking one team sheet and pretending it means something it probably doesn’t?

If you want to blood youngsters, put them in the U21's or some tournament like that.

Or give them the opportunity to prove themselves on the big stage?

You never know, they might just surprise and score a double…like Estevao did against South Korea in October.

The Socceroos probably only get 3-4 fixtures more before the proper World Cup next year to get the house sorted. Each of those games will go some way in assisting Popovic in getting the chemistry going. Id be OK if the Socceroos lost , if they are trying to find their blueprint or style. Watching the England v Serbia game this weekend , England still looked like they were still trying to figure themselves out. Their key players still played around 60 minutes or so before getting subbed out. It would be a bit foolish of Tuchel to give players who he doesn't think are in consideration time: Trafford, Spence, Quansah, Chalobah, Bowen- none of those got game time against Serbia, even in a game that means very little to England. Right now those 5 are behind the pecking order of any of the starters and subs used in that game. You also have Gordon and Burns who weren't used , who are ahead of those five.

Estevaos form in the FIFA Club World Cup and Chelsea, means he is now an important cog in that Brazilian formation. Ancelotti knows this. He was well in Brazils thoughts well before playing in these friendlies or the ones in October. And being a youngster, he doesnt need too many minutes to prove himself.

This was a quote from the great Ancelotti :"I saw him play at Chelsea, the thing is he doesn't need a lot of minutes to show his quality, he can play 5 minutes and you can see his quality, Brazil is lucky to have him and also Chelsea." Now I have no idea how many minutes he played but a player that young, the way I have seen him being used at Chelsea, he has been 'eased' into their team, as they don't want to burn him up at his age.

Popovic from recent memory has tended to blood youngsters into his team. I remember he blooded his own son at around 15 or 16 years old at Perth Glory against Man United in some friendly. The benefit I believe blooding a player of that age early is those experiences will help somewhere 4-5 years down the track not necessarily so for the short-term.

One metric looking at the Opta Data stats I notice from that game is Australia only had 12 Tackles combined as a team for a game. Gathering the players didn't chase as hard to look to take possession off the Venezuelans when they had the ball. Thats a relatively lowish number for a football game.

Ok.

I’m not sure what your point is, but I note you did seem to drop the Brazilian comparison pretty quickly.

You have shifted the goal posts.

At first it wasn’t right for teenagers to feature at senior level. Now you say they can, but only if they’re good enough.

Which is it?

Different managers have different philosophies. Stop the press!

Seems reasonably in line with some other matches.

I’m not sure what they classify as a tackle and I’m guessing you’re not either.

Comparing Brazil to Australia is laughable. Brazil don't have a problem with which pot they're going to be in unlike Australia.
