Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

My back of envelope calcs in my head

Based on Twomey’s mock, Gold Coast would be ~300 points short of matching our bid on Murray. They’d then need just over 700 points from somewhere to match a bid on Addinsall

The difference between us bidding on Patterson at 3, instead of waiting for Richmond to bid at 5 is 345 more points Gold Coast would use up matching that bid which is equivalent to pick 34/35

Their options to generate extra points with pick swaps in this trade aren’t great so to match they’d need to go into deficit or trade one their F2 picks (one tied to Melbourne and their own)

If we’re serious about dislodging Addinsall then bidding on Patterson after Uwland is the play
Are those calculations with the trades he is reporting will be done when the trade period opens?

If Schoenberg is coming in as rookie DFA with Dev and McCrae and assuming we move Champion to Cat A to accomodate Evans and Walley, the only way we get Banfield is in the ND with a main list spot unless we upgraded Hutchinson.

If there’s no bid on Banfield we could add him as a rookie

It’d just mean a 37/9/2 list split rather than 38/8/2

Rookies would be Hutchinson, Brock, McCarthy, Newton, Champion, Robertson, Macrae and Schoenberg. Banfield would be the 9th if he doesn’t fill the 5th and final main list opening

Yeah that's it for me.

**** you wce for ruining my Wednesday. I'm not tuning into this crap. I am not an enabler

The happy clapping seals will never admit they are wrong. I mean look at Murphy Reid he won the rising star and we have some seals saying Bo is great success.

**** you wce for the following
1. Making me miss WCE biggest draft haul night OR Taking Dyson sharp but making me miss it because of me not tuning in
2. Dooming this club for the next five years.

This club is stuffed for the next five years. I look forward to the acrobatics when we finish bottom 4 for the next FIVE years and potentially Duursma and Harley leaving the club 2027 together to reduce the hate. I haven't included CDT because he's not going to be worth anything come his request for trade

I might tune in until the names get picked to see if they are Hail Mary trades. The last time I felt gloomy was preseason last year and turns out I was right when we won game. Best thing coming out of the trade and draft peroid is DEV.
I tuned in for this, and it didn't disappoint...

I haven't had a chance to catch up on this thread today but I'm on the bus home and just read the phantom. Two things that I'm ecstatic about if they do eventuate...us bidding left right and centre, and even more so...Addinsall with our third pick.

The kid gets no respect around here. I see a gun in the making. All of the tools and just needs a bit of coaching to ensure he makes the most of every touch. Dual footed, tough in the contest and an AFL ready physique. Get excited if you're not already. Very high hopes for him

If we’re serious about Addinsall we should also bid on Patterson after Uwland.

Bid on Uwland at 1
Bid on Patterson at 2
Bid on Dean at 3

Select Duursma at Pick 4, let Annable slide because of niceties with the Lions (Only if this was the case otherwise **** them too) and whatever comes of Pick 5 with a live trade or CDT so be it.

Addinsall is just a bonus.

The precedence is set, and 2026 we do it again to Port and Carlton (take 2)

This is surely parody, right?

It can't possibly be a real person. No one is that .... well .... melted.

I don't have an opinion on him at all. Never seen him play a game.

But a couple of times a day i check the last few pages on here and i keep seeing people saying things like he has already hit his ceiling and has no further upside and we should only take him if he slides to the mid teens or later. I am just wondering if that opinion is built on something real and tangible or not. Or maybe they just want CDT so badly they are imagining negatives about the other prospects with that pick.
I think it's more at pick 2 you want the 2nd best talent not the player that meets your needs. If you look at Cals phantom draft as club perceptions drafting sharp at 2 is the equivalent of drafting the 10th best player at pick 2 vs the 4 (CDT) after bidding

Sorry, missed those trades so didn’t factor them in. With where those picks might drift into they’d have an extra 850 points thereabouts

Which is all the more reason for us to bid on Patterson - they’d probably be able to cover Murray but would be well short of matching Addinsall - do they want to take a 500+ point deficit into 2026 just so they can add a midfielder they have no room for

If Sharp didn’t have concerns over his athleticism he would be the runaway number one pick favourite.
And if Tim Kelly had the strength and power of Chris Judd, and Duggan had the foot skills of Luke Hodge and Elijah Hewett had the endurance of Cousins and Hough had craft of Dunkley we might have been a top 4 team.

Addinsall:
Better hands
More evasive
Better athletic profile
Better accumulator

Sharp:
Better resting forward
More tenacious
Better defensively

Their clearance work is pretty equal although they go about it in different ways (think Neale vs Green).
Missed the main part to me which is out of all the clearance winners in the draft Addinsall has shown the beat aerobic capacity by a mile. He is the only one im comfortable in that can run the game out with absolute ease. You can chuck him in the midfield and he wont need to be rested at HF for example. Its for that reason I prefer Addinsall over a host of others. We need someone to be a flippin midfielder and thats what he will be

Don't love it, but could live with it given we traded up to no man's land at 13 and lost the race for 9. As a combined haul, better Addinsall at 13 (in addition to Duursma & CDT) than reaching for the perceived need in Sharp at 2 + BPA at 13. Our list is so short of top-end talent that it's a no-brainier to go BPA at 1 and 2 and fill needs when the draft even outs (as it does by 13).

Relative to Sharp, Addinsall is cleaner in congestion, has more running power, and is more capable of transitioning and linking through hands on the spread ala Will Ashcroft or Lachie Neale (but without their rare mix of class, goal sense, and explosiveness). I see Riley Sanders as a more realistic comparison. Would compliment Harley and Duursma nicely.

Addinsall's lack of penetration on his kicking is a concern, as is his lack of size and pace, but the increasingly transitional nature of the game might hide these shortcomings. I just can't help but be reminded of the other ostensibly "balanced/clean" smallish mids we've selected around this third-tier range of the draft (i.e. XON, Ainsworth, Parto) who never develop the weapons to play midfield at AFL level or the versatility to play another position. Let's hope Massey has a better eye for mids than the pieman.
His size concerns me as well though if he and Gross make it, they could potentially swap between midfield and a flank?

Suns trying to build some more points it seems

Yeah under the Suns part they have 3 trades ready to go.

The Suns have three trades ready to go for the start of the draft to add more points, with the club set to get pick 35 from the Giants (in exchange for a future second-round pick) and 48 from Adelaide (for a future third-rounder) and 49 from Port Adelaide (also for a future third-rounder). The club also has picks 15 and 18 on the trade table, but at this stage there has been no movement on them. If an Academy player is let through to a bidder, then it would likely open up a selection for the Suns to use at the back end of the draft on an open pool player.

Do they take Evans or Banfield as a little bit of pay back for their 5th spot (if they rate them around that range)

Good lord there's some stupid campaigners on the blues board. They're acting as if we're specifically targeting them for no benefit to ourselves.

They'll find a taker for some of their early picks too i think.
No one has picks to bundle up to get pick 15 since all the picks in the 20s are going to be eaten up by bids already. They are at the peak points they can get basically... If we just bid on Uwland at 2 and Richmond choose Paterson at 5 they cant match Addinsall really
