Incredibly petty if true, because they gain almost nothing out of it.
Exactly Jim.

Could understand a WCE bid if it gave them some sort of an advantage but with the proposed pick trades we’ve planned to get rid of 9 and 11, what exactly are WCE gaining - fa. The bid has no bearing on Essendon and North, or whoever that gets to use picks 9 and 11.

Petty and pretty stupid if you ask me.

How is bidding on a player that you want petty?

Going through all the emotions.
  • Academy players have ruined any equalisation and the draft as a whole.
  • The draft to me is now boring and commercialised.
  • Dean and walker, have cost us Curnow, De Koning, Silvagni + our F1.
Oh and **** west coast, karma is a bitch!
But you just know if and when we have the opportunity to make them pay, we won't.

Honestly - I would go with not necessarily "screwing over" but making pay. It is a competitive environment and I have never seen why clubs like say North, let Daicos slip to 4 just so JHF could have his ego stroked that he went 1.

Given everyone knows Dean is going to go to Carlton - why would you let Carlton get him at 8 -10 (where most people have him rated) when you can force them into matching at 3 - when you have to compete against Carlton.
Why not make the B2B premiers pay first?

This club is cursed. How is Dean bid on at pick 3…. Seriously?!

Dean was rated at best 20-30... then that comes in to 10ish. Then it's 7 -10 range. Now without him playing a game in the last month it's somehow gone up to 3? Crazy situation.

I like Ison but if a bid is going to come at 22 we're only 2 picks off Lindsay - one of the classiest players from the whole draft.

Surely we've got to reconsider picking Ison in that case?

What amateur recruiters, including the media ones, look at is game day performance.

They don't get to see all sorts of stuff, training, nutrition, off-field behavior etc. etc.

Even then they may not get to see all the games that a player plays in a year.

Clubs have large recruiting teams for a reason.

There is a lot to cover and you don't want other teams to steal a march on you by hiding a kid.

So, on balance, I err on the side of the professionals

Because you know Carlton will match the bid at #3 and WCE won’t get the player they want, that’s why.

Also, the other reason teams bid is to get an advantage with later picks moving up.
But if Carlton trades 9 and 11 for later picks, then 9 and 11 don’t get used up in matching of the bid and there’s no sliding up of picks or advantage gained.

That’s how the bidding system works. That’s exactly what the system is.

Doesn’t explain it being “petty”?

How dare he improve and become the best KPD in the draft.

I think West Coast bidding on Dean at 3 does us a favour, because it should hopefully mean the AFL will conclude the current system is working and not change it any further for next year.
That is a very underrated point.

If they keep the system how it is there's a chance we could concoct a draft hand next season that delivers us Cody and Arki Butler (imo the best small forward prospect to come through in a number of years) or at least a shot at Neocleous or Prasad.

I think he's a very good player but 3rd best in the draft ? This is WC playing funnybuggers wiping out as many of our picks as possible to benefit them later on.

Third best for West Coast, maybe?

They have Ginbey as their premier key defender atm

The wording is semantics they are bidding on a player they are not getting so there is no tangible benefit other than screw Carlton over.

l can understand them bidding on a player they have a chance of getting but there is no tangible benefit for West Coast.

That is exactly how the system is meant to work though.
