Premiership Pie Mason Cox will land at Freo as a SSP rookie signing. Delisted Crow Harry Schoenberg will do the same at West Coast. Both skipped nominating for the draft so can sign through SSP.

That alone tells you how highly clubs rate this year's draft.

Next year's draft is expected to be stronger and have less players we can't select.

Pick 18 to 20 (after bids) next year should be better than pick 20 to21 this year.

I also think we finish in the bottom half of the top 8, which could be pick 14ish.

It's even more pronounced after the first round.

That said, if someone we rate highly slides, there will be takers for our future picks.
At this early stage Carlton F/S Cody Walker and Port/AFL NGA Douglas Cochrane are clear top 3 with Arki Butler.

Seeming as though its a Mid and a Fwd.
So could be any of the following combo's
Marsh/Onley
Marsh/Barker
Ludowyke/Barker
Ludowyke/Onley
Sharp/Hetherton
Sharp/Curtin
Barker/Curtin
Marsh/Barker for me, unless something happens and Cumming slips. Wouldn't ben opposed trading up for him in that case. Shame it looks like we'll miss out on baby Curtin though.

Hoping we can do F2/55 for a 30’s pick if there’s a slider in the works

If we can get Essendon’s F3 for 48, hopefully there wouldn’t be too much difference between what our F2 and that F3 would be

Mail said recently that Barker was our #1 choice before the ACL

Now apparently preference in order is ( remember this is 2nd hand info)

Dovaston
Marsh
Barker
Phillipou

*** IF Sharp slided we would jump all over it **

IF Curtin is there later on we will take him - no hesitation

Think you can almost rule out Sharp, won't slide past Melb if Essendon don't take him (think they will) and neither of those clubs are trading out - not that we have the assets to trade that far up anyway.

The Marsh/Barker combo would be the dream but think there's too many clubs into Barker for him to slide enough for us to trade up/in for him.

Hetherton you'd think would be worth a roll of the dice if he gets through to our last pick.

Adelaide Crows: “The team of all South Australians” has a familiar ring to it .
I wonder if we might not have a quiet deal set up with Melbourne to access their pick 8 as there is a strong rumor they are after Nairn and there would be every chance he is there at our pick 16. Maybe we give them our f2 and one of the f3's we will have OR maybe a swap of our f1 for their f2. At pick 8 on the night if Sharp is still on the board it could be the opportunity to jump

Do we really need Dovaston with Rankine, Rachele, Keays, ANB, Ah Chee, Pedlar all there?

Don't see Melbourne doing that if the reports are correct re Nairn. Their M.O. in recent times is to have clearly defined targets and they don't deviate from their talent board hence why they took no chances going what was considered a tad early with both Luke Jackson and Kossie Pickett.

Pedlar isn't a guarantee to be in the 22, but I imagine the thinking would be with Dovaston there it gives you more time to allow a Rankine or Rachele to take midfield minutes while still keeping our defensive pressure and goal scoring ability in our F50.

My take on Hamish's comments:

We are very prepared to trade our 2026 1st to move up this year. There's someone we want.

However... "we really like next year's crop of SA draftees" is a lie to retain the value of that pick in any swap.

None of those bar Rankine are zippy, crumbing small forwards. Given we want Rankine to have decent midfield minutes, it's probably our biggest need outside a quick, ball using mid. The amount of time the ball was on the ground in our forward line during that Collingwood final and we had no ground ball presence...we win that game with Rankine or a quality crumbing forward in the side.

F yes. Look at Brisbane. Can’t have enough crafty small to mid players
Especially when there’s gonna be no sure-fire mid prospects around our pick

At this point, I’d definitely be okay with drafting a potentially elite non-mid role player (small fwd, 3rd tall fwd, wing), especially if Taylor (who I think can definitely end up a mid) is off the board

Taking Dovaston at that current first pick lets us put Rankine more full time mid

There is already a mid in the pipeline for next year who is OOC and would compliment us beautifully ( no not Zac Bailey - he is a FA)

Will share more when I can publicly
