Rookie Me Central 2025 Draft Guide

Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

I haven't read through the 40 pages of posts since the Twomey phantom draft, so apologies if already covered.

How do we fit Robertson, Macrae & Schoenberg onto our list and still manage 1,2,13 & Banfield, Williams, Evans and Walley?

Isn't that 1 too many for the list spots we have, even if we don't lose anyone to bids?

Recall several ITK posters rated Hough.

Was a somewhat hidden gem from Wa the mob over East didn't rate.

Which is perfectly fine for a pick in that range. East Coast sides have plenty of choice of locals in that range they would rank at the same level as a Hough but they go local.

It's why we draft in so many WA kids with later picks. When not much seperat3s players we historically go local.
More reactions to the Hough draft to help pass the time

If I was so inclined I wouldn't have taken the easy option of asking the question.

Tbh, I largely tuned out weeks ago. The constant CDT, Sharp & 2+13 for 5+6 chat became tiresome a long time ago.

Assuming that all of Twomey's mail is correct, here is the 2026 Age by Position

Hey mate, are you able to do this a year from now that includes 2026 NGA kids - I am getting the sense that 2026 draft miight mean we try a different tact, instead of selecting best available (mids) we start pinch hitting best needs.

And kudos - this always helps me understand where our list profile is at (y)

A bloke for Brissy list team was on Gettable today now it’s a bit different due to what they have had coming in via FS and Academy but it sounded like he has been there from the struggle days.

He said the Brissy tactic is a simple one trade for needs and draft best available when your on the clock .

As everyone knows we have 10 overall list spots, three of which will be filled by our R1 picks

Committing to taking Schoenberg as a third DFA reduces available list spots to 4

That could be Banfield and our three NGAs although I think if Evans goes undrafted there’s a good chance we add him as a Cat B but not Walley which would allow us to use pick 1 in the RD

(Assumes that we match Williams or pass and take someone else then add Banfield in the main draft- if we use a 5th main draft pick and are able to add Banfield as a rookie if he gets through then we can’t use a RD pick)

I’m not a big fan of Schoenberg and would prefer we used that spot on a kid or alternatively held it open for a train on spot. Blamires is one example of someone who could be there in the RD we could take instead of Schoenberg

Clarke said yesterday we’re taking those guys on the basis they would be competing for senior spots and not just to boost the WAFL although they will help the WAFL side if they aren’t picked for seniors

(Might have been Pyke on Duffield’s show)

Both players have stayed out of the draft so for them to do that they must have been given an assurance we would take them. Would be a dick move by the club to then walk away from that commitment
100% this.
WC not excited by 1 of our NGA's, Walley most likely and will be left on the bench.

Match Williams.
Banfield and Evans through to rookie draft.

WC it seems don't rate some later picks in this draft and happy to take Dev, McRae, Schoenberg as genuine depth and potential upside with the view that probably 1 will remain on our list after 3 years and the others will be WAFL players/delisted.

We will still have a later pick coming back after matching Williams which will probably be around the late 30's after picks swallowing etc.
This is where WC will assess the draft and take a project tall imo.

Curtin or someone else as a KPD, if nothing of interest push into next year but would expect this to be the least likely outcome.

So it’s starting to sound like the strategy around getting a midfielder (an area of need acknowledged by Clarke and Pyke) boils down to this:
  • hope that Duursma, a HBF, can transition to AFL midfielder
  • hope that the Suns don’t match an Addinsall bid
  • re-heat a few delisted blokes
  • hail Mary that we can get Evans and Banfield (who appear to have little interest from other clubs) and develop them into AFL mds.

Hopefully there’s a twist in the plot because this strategy is just kicking the midfield deficiency can down the road.

Happy sharing it but I will wait until middle of 2026 before I attempt 2027.

Here is my early listing for NGA and FS in 2026 draft. Out of them, I see Kehn, McGlade, Shanahan and Williams as real possibilities and Harper I see as the best Banfield as it stands.

As you can see, loads of small forwards, a distributing HBF, a CHB plus a lone midfielder.

Kehn and Harper look the only two certainties, but much can change in 12 months.

Umm, Duursma's a midfielder, not a HBF. Played mid/fwd all juniors. Only played around the ground this year because clubs wanted to see how versatile he is.

Not sure why people keep thinking he's not a mid.

Have you watched Duursma regularly this season?

Any chance we haven't committed to Schoenberg & McRae and will make them go through their paces at training before making a final decision?
I thought that was the standard process... 🤦‍♂️
Given that they didn't nominate for the draft, you'd think that they've got guarantees (otherwise you'd take any chance however slim that might work)

About 24 hours to the bewitching hour, here's hoping we do well and there's a surprise and not an underwhelming stale white bread vanilla bog standard selection?
No pressure.

Seemed to play predominantly at HBF in the champs. Looks most suited to HBF to me. I certainly hope he makes it as a mid (in the mould of Bont and Day who he admires) but I think there are genuine question marks on that.

Addinsall:
Better hands
More evasive
Better athletic profile
Better accumulator

Sharp:
Better resting forward
More tenacious
Better defensively

Their clearance work is pretty equal although they go about it in different ways (think Neale vs Green).
Addinsall has very good hands but Sharp's are a level above. Proper good.

We can only draft the talent that's on offer. Reaching at #2 for Sharp, Cumming or Robey has its own drawbacks.
Meanwhile the extra rookie spots are hard to fill with 18yr olds when the depth of talent just isn't there.

Can't look at 2025 list changes in isolation. Part of the plan includes our currently listed mids developing (Gross, Hall, Davies, Allan) and future draftees being injected over time as well.
