Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

At least we can expect dev, macrae and shoen to train the house down all year fighting for a spot. Hopefully it really lifts our training standards and the young guys come on quicker.
Reality is if one of those three turn out to be an average AFL footballer we've done ok. In the meantime they set a floor that will require the kids to raise their efforts if they want a game. No free bee's this year.

For every Matthew Owies (ugh, I was one of those that thought it was a worthwhile punt) there is also a Jayden Hunt - useful contributor that we parted with a trash pick or a rookie spot for to shore up the squad.

Even if they turn out to be depth players at best, at least the Beagles get an immediate and sizeable boost and that has a flow on effect to the senior team.

I admittedly do not rate those three that highly, but there isn't much better floating around. Better to use a rookie list spot on one of those delisted mature players that have shown something, rather than a project 18 year old (in my opinion).

You guessed it 3/4 now.
Duursma
His end-of-year dance concerts over and his bags packed, Duursma is ready to make the move from Foster in Victoria’s Gippsland region to Perth on the other side of Australia. It has looked like being Duursma to the Eagles for some time and there will be no surprises here now. He is the most talented player in the open pool and will strive to become a Marcus Bontempelli-type player in the years ahead.

CDT
There have long been talks around a potential trade with Essendon for this pick, but that looks no chance now. While the Eagles also like Sullivan Robey and Dyson Sharp, Duff-Tytler is the favourite to head west. A Luke Jackson-type ruckman-forward, the former basketball star is a highly mobile tall who can do things on the field that other players his size can’t.

Addinsall (after Murray bid again)
West Coast could bid for Addinsall at the previous pick, but consecutive bids on Murray and Addinsall will make it difficult for Gold Coast to match both with Zeke Uwland and Dylan Patterson to deal with earlier. Addinsall probably doesn’t get a look-in at the Suns, but he may be a walk-up starter for the Eagles with his contested ball-winning, clean hands and athleticism. Dyson Sharp would be another option if he slides this far.

Williams (Freo bid)
Williams isn’t quite the complete package just yet, but he does have exciting AFL traits as a quick and agile half-forward with some tricks. The West Coast NGA prospect looks up to the likes of Bobby Hill and Kysaiah Pickett and has attracted interest from a range of clubs including the Dockers this year. West Coast would prefer a bid came in the 30s, but are still expected to match at this point.

Sharp gets to pick 9 on this one. What could’ve possibly been if we got that pick.

As someone who was initially sceptical on both Duursma and CDT, I must say that listening to both of them, they’re impressive young men

Both appear to be exemplary characters with a really good attitude which includes a willingness to move to WA that extends beyond mere acceptance to something they sound genuinely excited about

If it does go the expected path and they end up at West Coast, I’m more than happy with that result

Sharp won't get to 9. If Essendon tries that, I suspect we'll be in Melbourne's ear. That said, Essendon could play a reverse uno card on us by trying to make us over pay for 9.

At least 3 mocks with Addinsall now. Are they still guessing/copying each other's work, or is there actually something in it now?

I would bet Matt Owies's list spot that they're all just copying Twomey.

Meh, a lot of ordinary mids at this point. At the end of next season we should have a much better idea of who is going to make it or not, and we can aggressively cut those that we don't expect to make it.
For sure, but in the meantime good to experiment with and chuck the magnets around, see who suits where. I won't brand them all ordinary until I see how they slot in. It's bound to improve some areas of the structure and game plan, hopefully back up Harley and free him up. Then cut the dead wood as you say.

I find it interesting that a bid for Williams is expected that high because it seems very much based on potential over performance. Some pretty good players still available at that pick, most notably Harley Barker imo, who are being overlooked

And I’m not so sure we match although we should have as good an idea on his capabilities as anyone

Just as interesting is the expectation in the phantoms that Gold Coast won’t match an Addinsall bid despite it being more than likely they could with only a minor deficit, if any

Can easily see the draft going differently with us having to select someone else other than Addinsall with our 3rd pick (maybe Lindsay or Barker) then waiting to see who slips to our 4th if we pass on Williams (maybe Hibbins-Hargreaves)

Have we ever been linked to Jai Murray? Seems like he's just put there before Addinsall to eat up the points which may well be true. If its only for points then surely we do the same earlier on with Pat

Lock it in if you haven’t already - Robertson, Macrae and Schoenberg at the club by Monday

Dev already doing his best to fit in by coming across with an injury so straight into the rehab group for him

I would’ve thought if we elect a 4th open draft player it would likely be a tall? Curtin ect

If you do your projected AFL and WAFL team with what is expected to come in at this stage (WD, CDT, BA, TW ect) it seems like a lot of similar players left over.

Cody Curtin or even the ruck we have loosely been linked with makes a lot of sense imo.

Straight from the AFL site Draft countdown recap;

* The Bulldogs are keeping an open mind at the draft, expecting four or five players of interest to be available at their first pick. They have not ruled out a pick swap on the night, and are also set to pick up Will Darcy, the younger brother of Sam and father of Luke

Oh Wow!! who is this Miracle of a person who is the father to his older brothers dad?

Vader.

Lindsay will be BPA at that pick, whilst he has a skill set we probably lack on our list, another half back would be a bit frustrating.

I know we done A LOT of work on Lindsay earlier in the year, like most top end teams, the interest cooled as the year went on.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we move down a few spots and take Barker or Phillipou

Having Lindsay do all our kicking in duties would be a massive improvement on what we do now.

Lindsay’s foot skill accuracy are laser focused.

Playing around with the trade simulator. Found a draft scenario I like. Not too unrealistic based on Twomey mock.

GWS trades 35 to GCS for F2
ADL trades 48 to GCS for F3
Port trades 49 to GCS to F3

1. Duursma (WC)
2. Zeke (GCS)
3. Dean (Carl). Carlton trade 10+42 to Dons for 20,25,28 then 12 to North for 23+F2
4. Patterson (GCS)
5. Annable (Bris)
6. CDT (ESS) WC trades 6+28 to Dons for 9+13. Would be a 270pt win to WC (equiv to pick 38).
7. Cumming (Rich)
8. Robey (Rich)
9. Sharp (WC)
10. X Taylor (ESS)
11. Farrow (Melb)
12. Nairn (Melb)
13. Dovaston (WC)
14. Grlj (HW)
15. Sumner-Picket (Nth)
16. O Taylor (GWS)
17. Schubert (WC)
18. Lindsay (WB)
19. Marsh (Adl)
20. Thredgold (Cats)
21. Williams (WC) Freo bid

5 picks inside 30 but would require us to bid on everyone to make it work.
Duursma, Sharp, Dovaston, Schubert, Williams
Rookie: Banfield/Evans

Man, you guys make me want to become Owies' sponsor (if I took part in such shenanigans). I feel like so many Eagles struggle in their first year after coming from another club that's he almost certain to have a breakout year and make people look foolish.

Or not.

Wow must say all this love for Addinsal has come out of the blu.

Personally would be disappointed if he ended up on our list.

Would prefer if we could some how trade up for Dovaston or Girlj if not trade back for Barker or Poo.

Dovaston and Grjl are certainly the types we need on the list, but that would involve moving on pick 2. Personally, I think it's a bad outcome if we get long-development-curve players in Duursma & CDT, while loading up on a large group of slower inside types, mature or otherwise.

I want us to put ball movement ahead of everything else.
