Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Dovaston and Grjl are certainly the types we need on the list, but that would involve moving on pick 2. Personally, I think it's a bad outcome if we get long-development-curve players in Duursma & CDT, while loading up on a large group of slower inside types, mature or otherwise.

I want us to put ball movement ahead of everything else.
Would love Duursma + 2 of Grlj, Dovaston & Sharp. Things will need to happen pretty quickly. Us planning to bid on Dean at 2 is strategic because Carlton will need to trade their 2 top picks to Essendon after we bid on Dean, and we need to swoop immediately with a trade for 2 + 13 for 2 of Essendon's 5, 6 & 9.
I wonder if we will bid on Uwland, Patterson and Annable, before we bid on Dean and then trade pick 2.

McCarthy?

Why would you waste his foot speed and his run and carry further up the ground?

Much prefer the idea of Lindsay hitting McCarthy on the chest forty-five meters up the ground and then McCarthy going for a 25 meter gallop along the wing and then passing and hitting Shanahand 30 meters out directly in front of goals. 🤷‍♂️

I would’ve thought if we elect a 4th open draft player it would likely be a tall? Curtin ect

If you do your projected AFL and WAFL team with what is expected to come in at this stage (WD, CDT, BA, TW ect) it seems like a lot of similar players left over.

Cody Curtin or even the ruck we have loosely been linked with makes a lot of sense imo.

Based on nothing, I suspect we only intend adding one of Evans or Walley onto the list to fill the Cat B opening

That would leave one rookie spot vacant after the 3 SSP commitments we’ve made - take a ruck/KPP with pick 1 in the RD

Sam Ainsworth and Marcus Krasnadamskis are two names to be seen floated around that might get through to the RD

No Ryan to ignore him when he goes for a one two, I guess :(

With how things look like playing out, my preferred use of our picks would be:
1. Duursma
2. Uwland (Matched)
3. Dean (Matched)
4. Patterson (dont care either way if Matched or not)
5. CDT

Leave bidmond to finish off bidding with Annable at 6.

Man, you guys make me want to become Owies' sponsor (if I took part in such shenanigans). I feel like so many Eagles struggle in their first year after coming from another club that's he almost certain to have a breakout year and make people look foolish.

Or not.
Be a good thing if he had a breakout year, competition for spots and depth. Admittedly, while other newbies did well in their first year, it was tough being a forward with limited and poor quality supply. The heat is certainly on him now, but will help improve the Wafl, if Mini doesn't stick with him.

I find it interesting that a bid for Williams is expected that high because it seems very much based on potential over performance. Some pretty good players still available at that pick, most notably Harley Barker imo, who are being overlooked

And I’m not so sure we match although we should have as good an idea on his capabilities as anyone

Just as interesting is the expectation in the phantoms that Gold Coast won’t match an Addinsall bid despite it being more than likely they could with only a minor deficit, if any

Can easily see the draft going differently with us having to select someone else other than Addinsall with our 3rd pick (maybe Lindsay or Barker) then waiting to see who slips to our 4th if we pass on Williams (maybe Hibbins-Hargreaves)
I recon he slides past our 4th pick, which puts us in a conundrum. If we take a 4th pick in the open pool, he then gets bid on and we match, that's it, close up shop, no more list spots.

So then we have sweat for the remainder of the draft hoping Banfield and Evans don't get bid on. If this happens I can see a couple of clubs being absolute campaigners and taking them. Pies for sure needs mids, and will look for the money ball options late in the draft.

I'd hope that clubs stay away from Banfield given he will (hopefully) request a trade hom at first opportunity. Unsure about Evans though. Just another reason why I hope that we pass on Williams regardless of how talented he is (third of four as I have often stated)

Can we just pick names this board knows? Every time we get creative with a pick they become a absolute potato.

Dont think we plucked a player from obscurity and have them be good in like the last 10 years atleast

Don't we have a future 2nd pick we could bundle up with our current 3rd pick to move up to guarantee we get a Grilj ,Dovaston or if Sharp slides.

Also not a favour to split pick 2

Both of the players Keys mentioned are well known, just not here. Kras was the ruckman for Robey and Dov's Eastern team that won CTL, tested at the state combine even better than CDT did at 202cm (only worse in the 2km). Linked to WBD with their 2nd pick possibly.

Ainsworth was u18 AA Ruck if my memory serves me, and was the SA champs ruck. A former KPD as well. Very talented

Agree that there’s a good chance a Williams bid doesn’t come until after our 4th pick and then we circle back to the discussion on why we didn’t open up a 6th main list spot - can’t shake the feeling that’s going to bite us firmly on the arse

We either trade the pick out or run the gauntlet with Evans and Banfield - I posted earlier a list of the names linked to clubs by Twomey in his phantom write up after pick 30. There was 35+ names for an estimated 25 picks with no mention of Evans and Banfield linked only with St Kilda

Not sure what we’d do in that situation but suspect we run the gauntlet. We might even pass on Williams completely if we rank Banfield higher, which is possible

Last time I clicked in this thread it was on page 77. Anyone got cliffs for the last almost 200 pages? 🙏

Sharp is good
No Sharp is bad
CDT is good
No CDT is overrated
Bock and Gunston
Clarke has no idea what he's doing
Bid on everyone!
Looks like we may end up with Addinsall
Addinsall is a better version of Sharp

Start at the top again.

No we don't.... **** me you come out with some bullshit sometimes.

Baker Maric Duggan reid are the only ones in the top 121 players
Yeah because we suck, not because thats not what they do.

You also didnt mention our best one here btw, McCarthy who was 25th on avg metres gained despite us being shit.
Duggan at 35 our best, but dump kicking to a turnover isn't metres gained.

Until we got Tmac in the msd we were the last placed metres gained team in the comp.

No-one has cemented a wing role yet, a metres gained position. And those that have shown glimpses of said stat are far too inconsistent. Maric Davis long brochman all need huge preseasons to cement the wing roles.

Now, starc off half back helps.
Dev should help Harley rocket up the charts in that stat.

But to say we have a lot of players that excell at that is just false. But then again, you think inside mids arent needed in the modern game any more so it doesn't suprise me your hot takes came out of a microwave.
Nothing youve said here disproved what I said.

We have explosive players through the midfield expecially, Harley, Hewett, Allan, Gross, etc who all prefer to burst with the ball and kick it long, what are you on about??
McCarthy was elite at it towards the end of the year despite us being shit.

Regardless how good you think they are Maric and Dewar types love to go for a run with the ball too.

Adding Duursma to the list also, another one to add here.

Cop on bud

That's the rub. How we rate the 4 of them.

For me my order would be
Banfield
Evans
William
Wally.

Simply because I think Banfield elite running and outside game help the ball movement.
Evans is the X factor could be boom or could be bust midfielder.

My hope is that at our third pick, dovaston is still there and we take him. This would allow us to let Williams go.

That’s irrelevant because it was never discussed directly, but tell me if you thought a player would turn into Ben Hobbs or Will Phillips would you want him with pick 3/4/5/6?
They are examples of how Sharps floor is not necessarily as high as people like ou suggested, and how a "guaranteed 250 game player" might not actually be so, considering other ready made inside mids that have gone high in the draft in recent years.

Sounds like you missed the entire point of those players being brought up. Nobody said Sharp is Hobbs 2.0 LOL

Agree with all the thoughts on a project tall being a priority with either our pick late in the 30's after Williams bid.

It will most likely fall to a couple of names around that area, if Curtin is projecting to be a better/fitter/more mobile version of his 2024 campaign than its his spot to lose imo.

If not I think the Krasnadamskis link is a backup to the backup plan but most likely gone and strongly linked to the WB at their 2nd pick.

Ainsworth would be the great get for the late pick/rookie option.
He had a very stong champs and has a BIG upside with his versatility and KPD background, also strong basketball career if that's the criteria this year;);)

Playing around with the trade simulator. Found a draft scenario I like. Not too unrealistic based on Twomey mock.

GWS trades 35 to GCS for F2
ADL trades 48 to GCS for F3
Port trades 49 to GCS to F3

1. Duursma (WC)
2. Zeke (GCS)
3. Dean (Carl). Carlton trade 10+42 to Dons for 20,25,28 then 12 to North for 23+F2
4. Patterson (GCS)
5. Annable (Bris)
6. CDT (ESS) WC trades 6+28 to Dons for 9+13. Would be a 270pt win to WC (equiv to pick 38).
7. Cumming (Rich)
8. Robey (Rich)
9. Sharp (WC)
10. X Taylor (ESS)
11. Farrow (Melb)
12. Nairn (Melb)
13. Dovaston (WC)
14. Grlj (HW)
15. Sumner-Picket (Nth)
16. O Taylor (GWS)
17. Schubert (WC)
18. Lindsay (WB)
19. Marsh (Adl)
20. Thredgold (Cats)
21. Williams (WC) Freo bid

5 picks inside 30 but would require us to bid on everyone to make it work.
Duursma, Sharp, Dovaston, Schubert, Williams
Rookie: Banfield/Evans
I'm not sold that Essendon would give up two picks for one. More likely that they would be comfortable giving us an F2 for an F3 to slide what will start at 9 to 13. Ie. 2, 13, F3 for 5, 9, F2.

Yep a bad decision by the looks.

I’ve spun this around in my head so many times I got dizzy

Moving Cripps to the rookie list was such a relatively simple exercise with virtually no downside

What it would have given us was so much more flexibility. We’re going to have 5 picks inside 40 and will either not use one or risk losing Banfield/Evans. Best case I see atm is we trade a pick into 2026, use 4 selections and hold an opening to match a bid

But no matter what scenario you want to dream up, there’s none that wouldn’t have been improved with an extra main list spot

Most of what the club has done this offseason I’ve been happy with but not transferring Cripps to the rookie list is a tactical error. And I’d love a journalist to actually press someone from the club as to why they didn’t but they won’t because their questions rarely extend beyond puddle deep analysis
