Rookie Me Central 2025 Draft Guide

Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

I do hope that the early part of the draft plays out as Twomey has it, if for no other reason than the terrible optics of the second-worst team from the most reason season ending up with the 7th best player in the draft.

Is it as bad as our second pick in 2023 being pick 30 despite winning the spoon and no picks were traded out?

So it’s starting to sound like the strategy around getting a midfielder (an area of need acknowledged by Clarke and Pyke) boils down to this:
  • hope that Duursma, a HBF, can transition to AFL midfielder
Duursma is a mid
  • hope that the Suns don’t match an Addinsall bid
  • re-heat a few delisted blokes
  • hail Mary that we can get Evans and Banfield (who appear to have little interest from other clubs) and develop them into AFL mds.

Hopefully there’s a twist in the plot because this strategy is just kicking the midfield deficiency can down the road.

Can we just pick names this board knows? Every time we get creative with a pick they become a absolute potato.

Dont think we plucked a player from obscurity and have them be good in like the last 10 years atleast
Maybe not from complete obscurity, but the way ppl were melting when we picked Hough, you would think that was pretty left field.. and he worked out well... but i do get your point! We love a left field pick flop!

Both of the players Keys mentioned are well known, just not here. Kras was the ruckman for Robey and Dov's Eastern team that won CTL, tested at the state combine even better than CDT did at 202cm (only worse in the 2km). Linked to WBD with their 2nd pick possibly.

Ainsworth was u18 AA Ruck if my memory serves me, and was the SA champs ruck. A former KPD as well. Very talented

We havnt had 100s of pages of discussion about them though?

Cripps also kicks goals, though. Not sure Williams replaces that. But even post-Cripps we do have Newton, Long, Owies, Champion, Hutchinson on the list, and we only need a couple of them to work, along with forward stints from Hewett, H Reid, Duursma, and two NGA small forwards in the mix next year.

T Williams will come at a price, and I'd prefer to prioritise Banfield and Evans.
We still need a genuine link up HFF player, we cant be relying on Harley/Hewett/whoever doing that when they rest forward.

Its a specialised role, a very important one these days

But no matter what scenario you want to dream up, there’s none that wouldn’t have been improved with an extra main list spot
While I agree with your position, there is a valid reason and that is they don't want to offer one or more of those players a two year contract. Looks like we have at least a couple of decent NGAs to draft next year, on top of our regular picks and hopefully some juicy trades ie: Warner. It could simply be that with their forecast of who is coming in and out over the next few years they can't afford to give some of those guys multiple years.

Yeah because we suck, not because thats not what they do.

You also didnt mention our best one here btw, McCarthy who was 25th on avg metres gained despite us being shit.

Nothing youve said here disproved what I said.

We have explosive players through the midfield expecially, Harley, Hewett, Allan, Gross, etc who all prefer to burst with the ball and kick it long, what are you on about??
McCarthy was elite at it towards the end of the year despite us being shit.

Regardless how good you think they are Maric and Dewar types love to go for a run with the ball too.

Adding Duursma to the list also, another one to add here.

Cop on bud
I'll give you HR and Hewett, but Gross and Allan is drawing a long bow.

What?

The descriptor I was talking about was explosiveness and metres gained(Addinsalls weakness)

Allan was described as having explosive speed and great kick penetration as 2 of his main strengths pre draft.
Gross had explosiveness next to his name.

They havent gotten on the park to display it at AFL level yet but to say its a long bow to draw is just not true.
They easily complement Addinsall.

We already have 15 players on our list coming off contract in 2026

Plus Schoenberg on a one year deal with triggers and at least two, possibly three other additions to the rookie list who’ll also be on a one year contract

That’ll be 18/19 players out of contract. Don’t see how reducing that to 17/18 because we added an extra player in the main draft makes much difference

But, I accept there must be a reason because there’s no way they didn’t consider it as an option at some point. It’s just I can’t work out what that reason is and it’s ****ing with my head

I probably need to let it go

Maybe they let Williams go because we've got more small forwards coming in over the next 2 years and they rate them higher?

I still cant believe we couldnt get 9 from Carlton, for 13 and change, we no doubt went in heavy handed thinking they had no other options and try to back them into a corner. I will be pissed if Grlj still available at that pick...

If Tyler Williams gets a bid in the late first round he will get a 3 year contract. I am assuming the 3 year first round deal is based on where a player is bid on (not the picks used to match).

Possibly true

Doesn’t change my point we’d be better off with an extra main list spot

• Five picks inside 40 which may or may not include matching a bid on Williams
• Extra spot in reserve for a potential Banfield/Evans bid
• Three SSP signings
• One Cat B signing

That fills the 10 spots

As it is that 5th pick inside 40 or Banfield will be filled with pick 1 in the RD instead

If we can trade out that 5th pick for a future and then match Banfield, I’ll concede there was a method of sorts to their madness

First 20 picks get a 3 year contract and isn’t tied to R1 specifically

Bid on Williams projects to be 20 odd so it would be a 2 year deal only

We may need to let Williams go to fire a broadside at anyone in future who may think they can bid early on our ngas to get as to pay up.

No doubt Carlton fans will feel hard done by that they couldn’t get Dean at a significant discount.

Essendon had more points to offer.
