Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Essendon offering more points than us is something of a logical fallacy. 13 is a valuable pick that Carlton could flip for even more points. This needs to be taken into account. The fact that Carlton isn't trading with us makes me suspect that we are indeed trading down with Essendon. Why use our picks for 9 when we can make Essendon pay for it?

Or maybe we're simply not prepared to meet on the asking price.

What?

The descriptor I was talking about was explosiveness and metres gained(Addinsalls weakness)

Allan was described as having explosive speed and great kick penetration as 2 of his main strengths pre draft.
Gross had explosiveness next to his name.

They havent gotten on the park to display it at AFL level yet but to say its a long bow to draw is just not true.
They easily complement Addinsall.
Best to see how they actually go before saying they're "explosive" at AFL level.

At this point in time they haven't shown it.
Will have to wait and see.

If it’s a choice between Curtin at pick 1 in the rookie draft and Walley as a Cat B I know which one I’m taking.
I guess it depends if we've drafted CDT and/or Schubert.
Walley is touch and go tho.
Is there a minimum of 2 years for guys on the cat b list?
Can see them not filling it if its 2 years with a fair few talented guys next year

We still need a genuine link up HFF player, we cant be relying on Harley/Hewett/whoever doing that when they rest forward.

Its a specialised role, a very important one these days

2026

Small forward (Owies / Champion / Walley)
Full forward (Shanahan)
Resting tall (A Reid / J Williams / B Williams / CDT)

Link-up HFF (Cripps / Newton / Dewar / Hutchinson: these are all players who have played up the ground at some point)
CHF (Waterman)
Fwd-mid rotation (Hewett / Kelly / H Reid / Duursma / Graham / Davis / Gross)

One of the above as a 7th forward

The Owies / Champion / Walley spot worries me, which is why I'm hoping McGlade and Farmer turn out well.

I do agree that Cripps / Newton / Dewar / Hutchinson also look shaky, and when Cripps retires this is solved only by someone getting better than they are now, or a midfielder becoming a permanent link-up HFF. Maybe Hamish Davis is worth a try here rather than as a mid/wing.

Great analysis.
Cripps/Long/Owies will be short term on our list and I have higher hopes for Newton than most of the others.

We will have depth players Dewar/Hutch fighting for a spot but not convinced they are better than Davis who has shown an enourmous amount for a first year player.

Davis I feel will be knocking Cripps and Owies out of that HHF role very soon imo.

Champion is the unknown but he has some decent skills and tackling pressure, question remains if he puts enough size on to compete at a high level.

Phantom Draft late mail: Intrigue over Tigers' picks, Bombers' big haul - https://www.afl.com.au/news/1454286

No changes in cal twomeys late mail
The Bombers' deal with Carlton will see them land pick No.9 and likely pick 43 in exchange for picks 21, 27 and 30 in a swap that generates more points for the Blues to match bids on Dean and NGA prospect Jack Ison, and see them enter the draft with three top-10 picks for the first time since 2020.

If they get 43 back it doesn’t seem that much of a points gain. Huge win for the Bombers imo.

Surely our deal would’ve been better but Blues didn’t want to give in to those tactics?

Of all those small fwds and link up fwds you listed I have faith in exactly 0 of them to be likely to be in the side in 3 years time.
Some will be still around, but none are close to locks.

Williams is a pretty big list need at this stage based on this.

Maybe Davis does it, but I still feel hes more suited to a wing(we dont really have any wings locked in either)

If we add McGlade and Williams, that should be at least some medium level talent added that should hopefully push all those other names out of the side, with a mid rotation and Hutchinson/Davis/Newton filling the last spots

We can draft H Barker and then claim him as LTI and take a mature delist player through this extra SSP spot.
Then we cant play Barker all year unless we get another LTI right?

What if hes fit and ready to go by mid season? We would be stuck with him locked out of the side

Still has us with WD, CDT, Addinsall with our first 3 picks.

The Tigers have played this pretty well. By keeping everyone in the dark about who they’re picking, they’re inviting the Bombers to do something silly to move up the order.

Might be why they’ve shown this late interest in Farrow and Cumming as well.

If Sharp is still there at Melbourne’s picks, I’d offer 13 and the Saints F2 for him.
I’d offer our F2 with zero hesitation for Sharp or Dovaston, probably even Grlj too. We’ve got the Saints 2nd and guys like Kenh next year anyway.

I reckon Essendon are leaving Sharp to that pick 9 to hear the best trade offers, Pies probably come with a F1.

Plus Cal doesn’t really have a good read on them. He was very surprised with Hotton and Faull last year for them
