If you think here is groupthink, wander over to the politics forum.

Seriously on the free speech point: free speech doesn't mean "I can say whatever I want and no criticism of what I said is permitted". We don't have a freedom of speech problem in the world, we have a tolerance problem. The ability to discuss things behind a computer and an anonymous avatar has empowered intolerant speech over genuine, in-good-faith, disagreement. Around here this manifests itself as serious pushback to something as uncontroversial as "premiership teams usually have a player in them who is the same calibre of player as Ryan Byrnes".

But if you suggest something like "the current administration at St Kilda is the same as all the other ones who failed", you are not only going to get disagreement but well argued points to the contrary. This is not an attack on anyone's ability to speak freely; it's a response to holding opinions not backed up by a range of facts.

The pessimism I see IMO is encapsulated by one cliche: that's so St Kilda. Something will go wrong that we cannot control, which will keep us in our place. I let this pass mostly, but this viewpoint concedes all agency we have over our success.

But something like "Ross hamstrung us with gamestyle which is why we were 8 goals down against Melbourne in the first place" is well worn criticism, and if it comes from those who don't give praise when it is warranted, it's going to get called out, if for no other reason than: sport is meant to be fun. For those who don't participate, it is entertainment. If you saw the cloud instead of the silver lining of the comeback against Melbourne, then perhaps find something else to do that could make you happier, unless it is the complaining that makes you happy, in which case find others who feel the same way and avoid those for whom your complaining ruins it. When we beat Melbourne I spent the rest of the evening laughing.
This is exactly the kind of reply that holds the contradiction i can tolerate.
First, you say, wander over the politics forum, but you post it right here. Why? Pot calling kettle black? or exercising your desire to move your bones on a matter (or two) .. and fine i say….

I was more pointing out there are areas on Big Footy with even less variance of thought than here. I don't post on forums to hear what people who agree with me have to say, I can just consult my inner monologue for that.

There is plenty of variance of thought on this board, and people will disagree. This has no effect on one's ability to have an opinion or give voice to it.

Negativity is easy to avoid. Blanket criticism is different and really, really annoying, and so is it's 1st cousin "writing someone off too early".

Can't you just skip past the post? Who gives a shit that others think differently. The negative posts about other people's posts are just as boring.

I don't understand why people get so triggered when other fans are pessimistic. If no-one had noticed, we haven't been a very successful operation. Psychologically you'd be much better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Coz is sucks to read that stuff on a forum. People generally come here for positive input and there's no history of success to balance out the negativity, particularly when posters are just whining. We're given plenty of reasons to be negative without extras here.

When its constant, persistent in the face of compelling counter arguments, and never changes, perhaps skipping past the offending posts becomes skipping past the offending website.

I mean, everyone should care when one is wilfully wrong or just deliberately mean spirited.

After being a member for more than 50 years, in which I’ve seen several Grand Finals but zero flags, I prefer to approach my involvement with whatever optimism I can gather.

With the time and money involved in being a supporter why would you bother if it made you angry, or sad?

My optimism, like other fellow optimists on here, may at times be a little misplaced.

But I certainly don’t need any posters micro analysing everything that is written and then attempting to drown it out with some negative, over logical, emotionless retort.

Take your misery elsewhere.

PS: Elsewhere refers to somewhere other than my brain, not this forum (freedom of speech and all that)

I actually think given our performances over the last 14 years, the vibe here is generally pretty positive right now.

I think most can see there are things to get excited about.

I'm just hopeful our coaches can make things click this year... and we don't get smashed by injuries.
Injuries are the key, especially early. King in particular makes such a massive difference. If we go into the early season with our regular injury crisis we will be up against it. If we are relatively fit I think we can challenge most sides.

I don't, I want a range of ideas. It's not a church.

What if others prefer misery and wanted you to piss off somewhere else? Maybe you need to learn tolerance.
