It seems unavoidable but hardly a win to give up dekoning and Curnow 9/11 for Dean. The two other first rounders for Curnow will be picks in the 20’s so steak knives.
It's 9 + 11 + 43 + 54

for 3 + 22 + 40 + F2

And we have no idea whether the picks for Curnow will be in the 20s or not this far out. The Swans might have a disastrous year for all we know.

Firstly, we could have had a a top 20 selection and the best KPD in the draft!!

Austin et al expected expected a selection for Dean to be in the range 6 - 8 and Ison to be closer to 30 instead of 20 and planned accordingly, and it looks like we got it badly wrong twice!! If WC don't bid on Dean, Richmond are expected to.... in fact, you rate Dean at 4 and Ison at 16!

We gave up 10 and 22 for 9 (and other selections) so Hawthorn could present 10 and 22 as part of their offer for Merrett... while we figured 9 would be handy because we expected a later bid for Dean, and therefore a live selection in the early teens...

The hard part is accumulating early selections like 10 and 11, not fully utilising them is the disappointing part; perhaps if they chatted with you, we'd be walking away Dean, Ison & a selection in the teens instead of the 30s without too much effort.

I don't consider good planning to be "There could still be a surprise to come yet if things fall our way", even if I hope they do too.

I do agree on the path the club are taking however it doesn't mean that they could execute better at times - we have a lot of ground to make up

We got more points in the Hawthorn trade, and it allowed us to do the Curnow trade.

How would we get the selection in the teens as well as Dean and Ison?

I'd day thats about level as a trade. We've failed to get an advantage from the fs/academy system, but haven't been disadvantaged either. Marginal benefit when you factor in our guys already spending time at the club, which should fast track them.

And that's just the reality of the situation. Nobody would have predicted Dean to end up a top 5 prospect after missing close to 3 years of footy coming into his 18s campaign.

Yes the AFL really did bend us over, but at least we've been able to take it with a smile and give them the bird back.

Yeah, I dont think its the clubs fault. You can't take full advantage of the system without the ability to plan. GC have managed it better but they knew where their guys were going a year in advance.

I would say we have that advantage with Walker but not knowing what the rules are detracts from it.

The positive is we get Dean who's a gun we didn't expect.

does anyone have an idea about the players next draft and positions they play by ranking for to have a read
This is probably better than anything you'll read online. Only very brief outlines of the players traits but it lists quite a few and how they've performed through the year.

Hyperbole is thrown about quite a lot in draft talk, but I genuinely think next years draft will be considered a super draft come end of year. The depth of talent, and elite talent is far greater than this years. Some outrageously good kids next year in a variety of positions.

We traded out this years first so without TDK and CC leaving we would not be able to pick Dean who is a pressing need.

It is a bit of a draft question do you want to pick bolsters or sliders. I think bolsters tend to have a better return on their draft position. A lot of sliders show why they slide when they step up to the AFL

Will enable us to package up north f2 with our’s or Sydney’s f1 for a better f1. Or both our and Sydney f1 get swallowed for walker and then we have norths F2

Give sus options. Shame we couldn’t get another f1

It'll be interesting what the points system ends up being. You'd probably be better value keeping the F2 if they dont bring in the 2 pick limit.
