The Chinese govt is ramping up the anti-Japanese hysteria again. Ultra-nationalism is always dangerous, but particularly when a government takes a big role in fuelling it. There's a theory that as the CCP's Marxist ideology became increasingly outdated they simply replaced it with a nationalist ideology.

I was living there in 2005 when there were anti-Japanese demonstrations and attacks and it was pretty scary. In the city I was living in they surrounded a Japanese-owned department store, smashed all the windows and were threatening to attack any Japanese working there.

I remember that. The reporting and stories from expats was the CCP were directing the attacks to put pressure on the Japanese for some preceived slight.

It was China that first issued a travel warning against Japan, and not without cause - unrelated to the current spat there have been Chinese nationals attacked unprovoked in Japan recently:

This current spat can be put down to new Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi. Although she’s not a member of the far right party (Sanseito) she’s the most far right leader of the LDP ever, and has adopted a much more hawkish stance than any previous LDP head. One of her biggest positions is the pushing of a far more revisionist history line about Japan in WW2. She’s denied or downplayed war crimes, said that acknowledging war crimes shows weakness on the international stage, supports changing school textbooks to downplay Japan’s crimes, said Japan’s WW2 actions were for self defence, and most controversially is a regular visitor to the Yasukuni Shrine, the tomb and museum dedicated to war criminals that whitewashes Japan’s WW2 history.

All that background has seen to a rise in anti China rhetoric after the previous efforts at diplomacy under Ishiba. There’s still a lot of ill feeling in China towards Japan for things like the Nanjing massacre and Unit 731,

Here’s an article from the Japan Times, so hardly “pro CCP”, pretty much admitting Takaichi started the latest spat and behind the scenes the Japanese are trying to make amends. A lot of the public comments are just for show.

So it’s far more complicated than “CCP evil, Japan perfect”.

I was living there in 2005 when there were anti-Japanese demonstrations and attacks and it was pretty scary. In the city I was living in they surrounded a Japanese-owned department store, smashed all the windows and were threatening to attack any Japanese working there.

But put it in context. Those demonstrations were in response to a 2005 Japanese school textbook that whitewashed a lot of Japan’s awful actions in WW2. And importantly the demonstrations were not limited to China, there was also opposition in Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines.

I guess if I predict that the Eagles will make the finals before every season each year for the next 35 years I’ll be “right to a degree”
So because people previously predicted the Eagles to make the finals but it didn't happen, this means that someone analysing their performances now to suggest they're more likely to make the finals next season isn't credible? Is that the logic?

Well I did write "demonstrations and attacks". I lived less than 2 blocks from the Japanese-owned Isetan department store so got a first-hand view of the demonstrations and damage done. Of course there was zero media coverage to verify exactly what happened, but there were all sorts of rumours flying around, including that Japanese store managers had been beaten up, and worse. (I won't repeat the bloodthirstier rumours here because there's no way of verifying whether fact or fictional.)

And I'm not saying here China evil, Japan good. Unlike Germany, Japan has always either glossed over or denied it's behaviour in WW2. What I am saying is that nationalism may have some minor benefits eg national unity, a sense of pride in national institutions or culture. But too often it is used by unscrupulous people to whip up xenophobia or promote a sense of cultural/racial superiority. Australia is often guilty of this, as are many other countries. And China is among the worst, particularly when the government is orchestrating a lot of it.

And here’s where the island is:

IMG_7417.jpeg

It’s closer to Hainan in China than any other country. It’s far closer to China than Norfolk Island is to Australia, which is closer to NZ, Vanuatu and France (New Caledonia). It’s 30x closer to China than the U.S. military bases in Okinawa and Guam are to the mainland USA.

Didn’t think that one through did you?

So you wouldn't have a problem if India claimed all the Islands in the Indian ocean then?

India already claims the Andaman and Nicobar islands which are 1500kms from the Indian mainland and closer to Indonesia and Thailand than mainland India. The uninhabited island you were so concerned about China cleaning a monument on is only 250kms from China and closer to China than any other country.

The Andamans do host a number of Indian military bases with the objective of blocking any Chinese movement out of the Strait of Malacca. India also has bases in Madagascar and Mauritius for the purposes of surveillance and logistics all over the Indian Ocean.

China-Japan diplomatic spat not what it seems: Taiwan experts

Chen Yu-hua (陳宥樺), an assistant professor at Akita International University, said Takaichi's remarks "do not signal an essential shift."

Instead, they simply made public what Japanese political elites have privately agreed upon for years: that Japan would intervene -- and should intervene -- in a Taiwan Strait conflict for the sake of its own security.

"She merely articulated Japan's unwritten rule," he said, attributing her directness to her "perhaps too candid a personality."

Chen argued that Beijing's treatment of Takaichi differed from its dealings with previous prime ministers, likely due to her pronounced conservative stance and perceived closeness to former U.S. President Donald Trump.

China's "pressure tests" began even at the APEC summit in South Korea in early November, he said, pointing to a brief and frosty handshake between Xi Jinping (習近平) and Takaichi ahead of their bilateral talks.

Why It’s Time to Rename the South China Sea

Reimagining the name of the South China Sea offers an opportunity to potentially redefine relationships and pursue a more peaceful and cooperative future in a region marked by complexity and interdependence.
Surely the peace-loving and peacefully rising China can accept such peaceful cooperation. :winkv1:

Yes the peace loving chinese who constantly threaten to invade Taiwan, and who carry out military drill in that country's waters.
You and I and others are fully aware what the chinese ebd game is, it's just a shame other can't or don't want too.

Given the South China Sea has been named after China since the 16th century those pushing to rename it make as much sense as devotees of the orange clown renaming the Gulf of Mexico which has been called that also since the 16th century.

So if these anti China clowns want to be equivalent to MAGA go ahead…..

Still a bat problem in China.Mate just got back, had to do a run on an iron or ship as part of his training to be a pilot, ship was crawling with them as they entered the port.View attachment 2485289
I think they are safe if left alone.
Only dangerous when battered and served without salt.
