Certainly not grieving the acquisition of the best key defender in draft - I am sure you are aware, like the eagles we need a KPD.

Have also come around to the belief the Eagles may genuinely believe he is second best player in draft, so again, no need to be down on acquiring that player.

Purely a strategy question on how the Eagles could maximise their draft hand, looks like North and Essendon will pick up the two small forwards with those two picks... so if you wanted either Pickett or Dovaston, guess it costs you that.

As Ive relentlessly argued with a certain Richmond poster on the D&T board, WC have been pretty upfront that they will simply bid according to their rankings

Its no more complicated than that

Can you ring up Graham Wright and confirm to him the eagles won't bid on Dean if Carlton agree to the Pick 9 for Pick 13 & 34 trade. Win win all round yeh

I think you are over-evaluating the strategising that goes on. In fact, you should thank WCE for informing Carlton where bid would come in. We could have kept it in house and completely screwed Carlton's plans over.

Not everything has bastardly attached to it.
Agree. I suspect the recruitment team have and being very open about desire to match / trade out.

Hence the Q is purely on best strategy for WC to maximise top 3 picks, as crucial for rebuild.

Only logical answer appears back end picks coming in further, helps them more than the potential advantage of picking at 11 over 13... suspect the player they have in mind for that range then is rated a touch lower.

If they bid came after pick 6/7, most carlton fans agree it would be worth staying in this years draft.

Won't happen, so doesn't matter now.

Purely a strategy question on what is best for eagles, bidding or not bidding. Seems fairly clear most eagles fans don't care between 11 and 13.
If a bid came at 7, 9 would be gone and 11 would have been pushed back to a precarious position where an ison bid may come before.

Instead Carlton essentially add norths F2 for free, they were doing the trade regardless.

Maybe Carlton should’ve traded 9 to us and we could’ve ensured a bid didn’t come until 6.

Unfortunately Carlton’s list team aren’t the greatest minds going around.

I suspect Wce at pick 13 will take a local boy Freddie Rodriguez The highest rated WA player ..State Captain, WA MVP and in the AA team ..

I wouldn't expect that.

Exactly, so WC bidding hurts any chance of pick 13 coming in?

WC Bid, pick 13 will only be pick 13.

WC don't bid, richmond bid, carlton tade and pick 13 remains pick 13.

WC don't big, richmond don't bid, Carlton may not trade.. pick 13 becomes 12 or 11.

What is best for eagles?
The Carlton board does not appear to be sending their best....

In your initial post you said that you will be accused of over thinking this.

Guess what?

You seem like an expert in the matter.

If it is the best thing for your club, all power to them.

I work on the principle clubs should always do what is best for them.

Bid, pick 13 is pick 13 100%.

Don't bid, varying odds on it becomes 11, 12 or 13.

What is best for eagles?

What's best?

For every team to learn dont shaft us at the trade table. We remember.

Consider it a long term investment.

My wife wants me to go to yoga with her this arvo.....starts at 6pm Darwin time 7.30 Melbourne time. :$

Just in time for pick 1........
Go with the wife, make her happy, you should be done by the time our third pick comes up, that's the one that we aren't certain on.

Or don’t accept the premise that Carlton would roll over and accept nothing for their picks just for the fun of it.

Don’t bid: hope Carlton have the world’s dumbest list manager and all other clubs also play along by not bidding at certain times, there’s a chance 13 comes in to 11.

Bid: guarantee we have stronger late picks to match our own kids if needed, unlock the tiny chance of Essendon moving up for 2 with a crazy overs deal, 13 stays at 13.

I know which I prefer.

Code sports are reporting we have interest in the later section of the draft in Sandringham Dragons halfback Rory Wright, Cats NGA forward Jesse Mellor, VFL best young player Tom Blamires and Cats VFL forward Tobyn Murray and Dandenong Stingray Jack Lawrence

No doubt that conversation has been had at length already.
My thinking is that we threatened to bid at 3 if you didn't trade us 9. Blues thought they would call our bluff and trade with Dons instead for a few extra points. Now we're going to carry through with our threat and Blues will actually lose more points than if they traded 9 with us. Seems like Blues are the ones losing out, not us. We haven't actually lost anything by not trading.

Just trade us 9 for 13 and 34 and we don't bid.

34 will come in to about 28 which is a few spots less than what you'll get by burning 9 and 11 straight up

You still have time to duck down to the shops and grab yourself a lime green mankini. She may elect to leave you at home and go to Yoga solo.

Carlton would know full well that a bid wouldn’t come if we ended up with 9, but they’re clearly choosing to trade with Essendon instead. Big whoop

I think we are underselling the fact the club won't be locked into taking our tied players. I feel like they've decided for arbitrary list profile (average age) reasons they don't want to take more than 5 kids in this draft, and subsequently limited list spots.

There's every chance in a draft like this they rate a player higher than banfield/evans and will select said player with a pick leftover from Williams.

Tend to agree.

You do lose out in scenarios where a bid would have come 1-3 spots before us... as it was accepted we wanted another pick in teens after Dean bid matching. This would occur if bid game from Melbourne / essendon. Brings in your picks 1 - 2 spots.

However, as others have pointed out, we would be dumb to hold the picks if bid came from eagles or tigers... better off banking points and getting something for next year.

Incorrect, both Tigers and Dons would have bid.
