Because Cal Twomey and many others have stated on multiple occasions that GWS and Hawthorn are looking to move back or even into next year. That means that picks 9, 10, 11 and 12 (as well as GC & Bris at 15 & 18) have been, or are still, available. That’s not me wishing, that’s been reported multiple times by multiple sources.

As I’ve said previously, it’s fine to have the opinion that the price is too high, it’s just not correct to say that the opportunity is not there.
And we have said that we believe next years SA crop is every bit as good if not better, so why would we be jumping out of that ??

Agreed, however there is different levels of system based. I’m perfectly happy with our game plan, however decisions like starting Rachelle as sub in the last game, because that’s how we always bring back injured players, is taking it way too far. And all great sides have their Rankines, Dusty’s or Stevie J’s who create havoc by going off script. Trying to totally coach that out of them will not help the side in the long term. There has to be a balance.
We started Rachele as the sub because he'd had the flu the week before and hadnt played in over 2 months.

You can certainly argue that it was the wrong call (IMO it probably was), but thats not really a system decision. Its one based on the probability of him getting through half a game.

I agree on your point about systems

I'm not sure I'm spending pick 16 on him

Good luck to him if he proves me wrong
Fair enough. Melbourne reached for similar players in Kozie Pickett and Clayton Oliver though (they both came from the clouds in their drafts) and that certainly worked out well for them in the short term at least.

I would argue it was a system decision

I think the decision was based around '' if he breaks down at least its in the 4th quarter and we can run the game through ''

A non-system decision is to pull the pin to start him - getting the crowd pumped - and playing until he collapses. Thats a Blight call to me

I’ve not heard that about the flu, but that is absolutely system based. System based means doing the same thing every time, even if it’s not working, as strength comes from repeatability and predictability, and we have repeatably brought injured players back through the sub role. Neil Craig was incredibly system based and it certainly worked to an extent, but as I said, there has to be a balance.

The opposite of system based is Malcolm Blight, and I have a hard time imagining him starting Rachelle as sub in that game.

Its a fair call for sure, and give how we started he wouldnt have been terribly tired at half time !!!

Rachele*

And people like to think that of Blight which is fair, but its largely irrelevant because he never had to deal with the sub.

People remember what Ted Hopkins did after half time in 1970 after being "subbed on"

No one objective said it. I mean you said it as well…
It's not only next year's draft that feeds into any decisions list management makes tonight there's next year's proven players that may become available, who knows we may already have a player that's indicated they have interest in joining us.

I thought he struggled in recent years as clubs kept their cards closer to their chest but fair enough

Nah, Cal had a 100% strike rate on the top 10 last year, and got to pick 7 in 2023. Generally, it seems like the first five or so picks are pretty well know in the industry and it's whenever the first team that's generally dithering between two options is when these phantoms fall apart (but even then, the selected player is usually mentioned in the write up and there isn't too many genuine left field, Doedee, choices).

For the most part though, the clubs/industry does seem to know which players each club is eyeing off in the first round (or putting in the work to prepare for someone hitting free agency in 6-7 years). After all, it's not just the clubs that can talk here, but the draftee/player managers know how many times they're (or their client) being interviewed by clubs.

I usually tend to agree about targeting local talent, however the other side of this is that so much media attention originates from Victoria that I’ve come to believe that our kids get overly discounted because of it. For example, if this years SA under 18 side was Vic Metro, and had gone undefeated, then I absolutely believe that this draft would receive more hype.

Guys like Blake Oudshorn-Bennier, Matt Leray and Jed Dahlitz all have A grade disposal and have had great years, but simply don’t get mentioned.

Latrelle Pickett seems absolutely perfect for us btw, and someone we could clearly get if we wanted. He would allow, Rankine, Rachelle and even Pedlar to spend more time in the midfield, he gives us raw pace that we lack, and he provides defensive pressure from our forward line which was so lacking this year. He is also 20 and on a steep trajectory which means we don’t know how good he can be once in a professional system, but also means he should be able to contribute next year.

With local talent, seeing players like JHF, Draper, Thilthorpe, Rankine, Rozee, Luko etc picked up a lot of hype in their draft years, and Sam Cummings has been the bolter in this years crop (from start of year), it's not like the league is sleeping on SA draft crops. For the most part SA prospects don't get attention because it's a state system that for whatever reason (systemtic, or general population) doesn't produce too many A+ prospects.

Not hugely surprising, seeing there are usually a few top-notch users of the football who slip through to the back end of the draft (or beyond). Whilst they can certainly damage someones chances, disposal skills don't make an AFL career and there are certainly concerns out there (ball winning/general toughness usually being the red flag, but also athletism/pace) which makes those skills moot in a draftee.

Whilst this club does need a bit more raw pace, seeing it's one thing we're really missing in our lineup, Pickett being an expected first round draft pick really is the canary in the coalmine that this isn't it for a draft crop. After all, it's a rather rare sight for someone older than 18 to break the first round, seeing usually the additional age works against them.

Pretty sure we say something of effect every year.
