Here we are again, where looking forward to and getting excited by the draft has replaced watching our team play finals

If we’re going to reverse that anytime soon and return to finals then this draft will be a critical step in that process.

All drafts are important, as the draft is a key plank in any club’s list build strategy - even when they’ve become increasingly compromised in recent years. But this draft for West Coast is as important as any in their history

Since the wheels started getting wobbly during 2020 and progressively worse during 2021, before falling off completely in 2022 (and ever since), West Coast have spluttered their way into a regeneration of their list

• 2021 we used a R1 pick for the first time since 2017 and took 3 picks inside 40
• 2022 we split what was pick 2 into picks 8 and 12 in a complicated four way trade and had two other selections inside 30
• 2023 we resisted overtures to trade away the coveted No.1 pick and drafted Harley Reid but the first pick of R2 that we also held onto drifted all the way to pick 30
• 2024 we controversially traded our R1 pick (3) to Carlton for two picks in the teens, one of which we ontraded for 2025 B&F winner, Liam Baker

So the rebuild has been progressing steadily, along with a virtual complete off field overhaul. But this year it kicks into overdrive after an offseason that saw just 8 players from our 2021 playing list still at the club heading into 2026

• An end of R1 priority pick for being shit that allowed us to trade for Starcevich without effectively using our usual draft picks
• And pick 1 as the “prize” for a one win season

- we enter the 2025 draft with three R1 picks for what I’m pretty sure is the first time in club history.

And depending on when a bid comes for our NGA player, Tylah Williams, we may have a fourth R1 pick should we choose to match

We also have a couple of R2 picks up our sleeve and access to a trio of NGA players and a Father/Son nomination

And four additional rookie list spots to build depth into our young list

Nail this draft and it gives us the launching pad we need to chase long term success under second year coach, Andrew McQualter

Cal Twomey has written the script which the rest of the media experts have seemingly followed:

• Pick 1 - Willem Duursma
• Bids on Uwland (Gold Coast) and Dean (Carlton)
• Pick 4 - Cooper Duffy-Tytler
• Bid unsuccessfully on Murray (Gold Coast) before successfully bidding on Beau Addinsall (also Gold Coast )
• Match a bid on Tylah Williams

And we’re effectively done other than to wait on potential bids for Koby Evans (NGA) and/or Charlie Banfield (F/S) - knowing that we only have the list space to match one, not both, should bids come

But drafts can be unpredictable and the script can never truly be written until it is. Questions that will be answered tonight and tomorrow

• What number will Duursma be given
• Does Essendon make a late trade offer for pick 2?
• Who do we actually bid on?
• Can we move pick 13 up the order, or back or use it as it lies?
• Do we bid on Addinsall as predicted and do Gold Coast match?
• When does a bid on Williams come and why are Fremantle such campaigners for doing so? Do we match?
• What do we do with our R2 picks?
• Do bids come for Banfield and/or Evans and do we match? Will we be able to match?

Gold Coast think they're trading to cover bids but make it impossible with our first action.
Actually use the bidding system against Gold Coast, unlike bidding with Uwland at pick 2 and leaving Patterson on the board (as is suggested we will do).
The sentimentality of pick 1 is overblown. Use some smarts.
