How many more leg-ups do the Suns need? A semi-finalist getting four first rounders (on top of Lombard, Rogers, Walter and Read in the last two) makes the draft completely compromised.

The only ones usually defending it are the northern club supporters. Compromised competition to help them, rather than just make it the best it can be. From handouts to academies.

It's not a leg up, they developed those players. It's not like they got a start of first round compensation pick for a perpetually injured forward.

Didn't realise gero supported a Northern club.

It's a self developed legged up, i guess the AFL didnt expect it to be as advantageous as this.
They've definitely done the best out of it but there's far more artificial leg ups in this league yet some get so wound up about the Academies.

Buckle up. This will ramp up in 2026.
Basset merely started the conversation. Now a big Melbourne club is unhappy pressure will increase on Swann to look into it.
People can disagree all they want, but GC having four academy picks in the top 20 is evident of a fundamentally flawed system.

The optics do look bad.
Academies have a place, they just need to be adequately priced.

Maybe they should consider a price increase for subsequent selections as a way to price out clubs being able to fill whole draft classes with academy players like the Suns this year. So say pay 5% extra points for your 2nd academy bid match, then maybe 15% for player 3 and so on. That way if a club is getting 1 academy player per draft it is no different to a non-academy club getting a good F/S. A bit of luck involved but you have to pay for it the same as everyone else. But not very often clubs get more than 1 F/S in a draft so that would help balance the disparity of availability of these closed pool academy selections which are far more plentiful.

The Suns paid for their players by also losing players, despite being able to get Petracca. If you add a premium for extra selections then they either have to take an academy player with a pick when it is their turn, possibly even a little earlier than expected; or they have to trade away more players/future picks to get everyone.

Yeah I dunno, the draft is meant to be the great evener. Are any other drafts in sport compromised like this?

To me, if someone is good enough to go first round whether academy or FS that should be just bad luck. I needs to be pure.
The duality of man right here.

They used to have AIS. Can’t they set up elite academies for players from northern states and pay coaches same as AFL coaches?

They used to have the northern scholarship program which was an appalling failure. There's a reason this approach was taken and it's an efficiency of resources. If the Swans and Giants are able to train and develop these kids in their facilities it's substantially more cost effective than having some independent, centralised new build facilities run by the AFL who essentially get nothing out of doing so.

Nothing out of doing so?? They gain players from other sports as Suns have done. Who do you think funds Suns program?

The great 2006 Socceroos had 11 players as for AIS scholarship holders.

In their wisdom they changed it so development of players between 17-19 became responsibility of A League clubs. Has worked a charm.

After they traded in Petracca as well.

I've not looked, I assume they've traded away futures to have landed the 4 players last night (while also giving Melbourne picks for Petracca)?
