I think it’s a good haul, we went BPA at every pick and greatly improved the lists skill and athleticism level.

I do worry for tomorrow night, the fact we’ll only take Williams and no one else is pretty flattening, there’s no excuse for not opening 1-2 list spots, NHH or Phillipou should have been ours.

One thing I will say is that all three draftees spoke really well and seem genuinely happy to come over to WA

Would love to know how hard we tried to trade up for Carlton’s pick 9 given that could have landed us Sharp and where we actually had Sharp in our internal rankings.

That and the logic behind burning the Saints F2 to move up one spot which I’m going to assume was to guarantee Lindsay if our bids failed

If I had to guess, I’d say the guy we wanted to trade up for was Farrow and not Sharp, hence why the interest cooled when we probably got word he’s a lock for Essendon or Melbourne.

Probably you should ask Kieran not in the personal thread about the player. What was the slide backwards that we did to get Lindsay at 17 or was that just all of the other academy pics coming in.
Realized the moment I said it

Well I wanted to target ground ball players and we have zero so far.

Consolidation prize is we targeted ball movement, predominantly with players who excel with the play in front of them.

I don't see any any immediate impact on team performance and we'll need to improve a lot from within.

I am not sure the club thought they'd stump GC on points - considering the move was completely sign posted days in advance and GC went into mega trade-mode to build their points on draft day with full knowledge of when the bids would come. The hope was that GC would simply let him go, rather than them not having enough points I think - they decided they wanted him.

I would suggest the trade up was either to ensure Lindsay was there as next cab off the rank or Hawthorn had made it clear they would bid on the GC players before us....or potentially we needed to outbid the Dogs for the jump ahead, rumoured to be very keen on Lindsay too.

Either way, costly on current face value but ultimately could be a pick in the 40s for a required jump ahead...I am just struggling to get THAT outraged about it...

This whole list spot thing is arguably just as big a **** up as burning the saints F2 for absolutely nothing. Imagine keeping Cripps and Barnett on the main list.

So much talent still on the board and it's touch and go with our NGA's + Banna's.

Was at the playground with my kid and pleasantly surprised we'd picked up Lindsay. Until a few hours later when I hopped on here and saw what had happened 💀

Exceedingly pleased with this first round. Was secretly hoping for no mids to be taken, just don't have the development space for them. Lindsey I wasn't expecting but his potential to immediately end the careers of Tom Cole, Harvey Johnston or evan Hamish Davis [or god forbid, the Baba Yaga himself] means he's got a genuine shot of cementing a spot in the 23 next year.

Very happy to let a midfield rotation of Reid, Hewett, Yeo, Allan, Hall, Gross cook for a year rather than throwing a draftee into the mix. Duursma and Lindsay can step into wing and half forward roles and actually be an upgrade in these kind of positions where our most offensive list cloggers have eked out a living in recent years.

Dufftler we can take our time with, hope he doesn't see a single ruck contest at AFL level in 2026 but about 8-10 games through the year covering for an injured Harry Edwards or Jake Waterman or Jobe Shannahan [its bound to happen], or holding down a genuine spot as our 3rd tall where matchups present themselves would be ample development for him. Then at the lower level build his ruck/forward craft.

Many players on the board I still like in the main draft but they are not for us as we've all noted. Banfield only academy kid I care about so if the expected happens and no bid comes for him and we match Williams I'll be pretty content. If we somehow **** it up and can't match an unexpected bid on him in the last half dozen picks them I am comfortable with the entire list management team facing the firing squad and folding the club for good measure.

It's been a big day. Here are some of my thoughts dumped in what I hope is at least a partially coherent fashion.

The Good
  • We got Duursma — a true utility with pace, dash and dare. If everything clicks for him, he has a Bont-level ceiling. He's the clear best player in the draft, and a good country boy to pair with Harley.
  • We turned Oscar Allen into CDT – a high-risk/high-reward unique talent who may be able to fill a position of dire need.
  • We got the best kick in the draft in Lindsay, who in my view was the best available at our pick and, along with McCarthy, means we no longer lack kicking ability coming out of defence, has leadership credentials.
  • We may have miraculously dodged a Williams bid at Freo's pick. One gets the feeling that Freo were ready to do some bidding and had Essendon matched Sweid, a bid for Williams would have been next. They didn't match, saving us points, improving the open pool, and giving us a realistic shot at a live pick player at 29, which will have good options for us.
The Bad
  • We had the Hawks’ first-rounder, the first second-round pick, Hawks’ second-round pick, a priority pick, and sold off Ryan and Chesser for middling points picks…
  • Yet we still couldn’t manufacture a pick upgrade into the top 10 from a points-seeking team (e.g. Carlton, GC) during the trade/draft period. We needed to do that to get access to a highly rated inside mid (e.g. Sharp/Robey/Cumming) but couldn’t swing it, even though we had leverage over those clubs by placing the first bids on their players.
  • Maybe this should be in the ugly when you think we could have had Carlton's pick if we picked right last year...
The Ugly
  • We used to be a team whose draft strategy was mostly secret — something we could use to our advantage. This year all our moves were predicted: from Duffma to the Uhland/Dean bids, and later with our double GC Academy bid.
  • This “transparency” was used against us, with GC assembling enough points to match (predictably), and Hawthorn appearing to get the jump on us to swindle a future second out of us for a one-pick upgrade. They would have known we were interested in Lindsay and played us for it.
  • Per the above, our club might also not know how to do basic maths, which many of us average punters in this forum don’t seem to have problems with.
  • List spots: Pick 53 was gifted to the Dogs and ended up being used against us by GC to match. We could have used that pick ourselves if we had moved Cripps or similar to the rookie list.
  • With no bid yet on Williams, and just three picks before our next pick, we may still get a swing at a good prospect rated above our tied players. Thredgold, Noah Hibbins, Phillipou, Greeves are all still available. We will take that opportunity if it presents, but in doing so, we will end up taking unnecessary risks in losing access to some of our tied players (e.g. Banfield/Evans) and lost trade flexibility (both up and down). This was an unprofessional and closed-minded strategy.

I reckon one of North, Dogs or Carlton bid on Williams with one of them taking Kickett.
Well North won't they just took Dovaston. WB and Carlton maybe I suppose. High chance we get to pick at 29 and then the list management team look silly. Likely we trade 29 for a f2 if we get a taker, wouldve said Saints for Pou however they don't have their pick, maybe crows.

Saints F1, with our second going back... One can dream.

I think North go for a tall - probably Thredgold

Carlton having lost Curnow and TDK and having picks to match an Ison bid probably go tall as well with either Emmett or Ludowyke maybe

Dogs are a threat though. They could bid on Ison or King or Williams

I reckon one of North, Dogs or Carlton bid on Williams with one of them taking Kickett.

I think North would be looking at one of either Louis Emmett and Archie Ludowyck, some one need to be added to their list as a KPF to help Larkey going forward.

Carlton may well decide to be vindictive after our Dean bid, so thats a real possibility.

Doggies might bid.

Saints could also trade into that part of the draft to chase Phillipou.

There are some good player still on the Board that would suit our list needs:

Treadgold
Phillipou
Hibbins-Hargreaves
Oudshoorn-Bennier

I be thrilled IF we can get one more pick away before we have to use our current pick #34 on Williams.
