Waded through the 60 pages of the draft day thread but will resist the urge to catch up on this one.

Duursma, CDT ✅✅

Bidding early was good, to really squeeze GC they should have bid on Patterson as I presume many have said, but I really do think that the word around “they’re just bidding in ranking order” probably holds a bit of weight.

Now, the trade.

Whether the stuffed the maths or not, I wonder if they more specifically stuffed the gamble that GC wouldn’t go into deficit next year? Have we had any clarity on if that’s the case? In any case, Saints F2 is a big price to pay to move up one spot, especially as we have likely NGAs to match next year.

However, with all that said, and with what transpired after with the Bulldogs, I really think both Hawks and Dogs were in for Lindsay so we obviously had to make a deal good enough to satisfy Hawthorn to miss him and likely outbid the Dogs.

I think we paid too much to move, but I’m bloody rapt to have the best kick of the pill in the draft head our way.

Later picks have come in a good way, plenty of options still. List spots could yet prove tight, that’s a cross as we suspected heading in. So easily resolved too, what a shame.

Very happy with the results, process odd at times, but I’m not turning up to Optus for hours every fortnight to watch a flawless draft process - I want talent on the park and we’ve added plenty (and they all seem like ripper kids too).
it was a risk v reward calculation. Great to see our poositivity all night.

Its fairly clear what happened. Eagles wanted to squeeze for Addinsall but completely missed the part were over the last few days Gold Coast accumulated a few hundred extra points to match Addinsall. Eagles bid for Addinsall thinking they had it all wrapped up but with those extra points Gold Coast matched. I suspect they only figured out Gold Coast had accumulated the extra points needed at 11PM last night.

Overall happy with the draft, the trade was strange and will be interesting to see it explained by someone at the club.
Really happy that the three we got all seems joyous about coming and getting stuck in. Good kids.

I'd be tempted to leave Williams alone if a bid comes in prior to our next, there is some talent to snag that I think overall is better for us.

Can we please get rid of whoever is making these calls. The Board has to move on this. Burning a second round in the last draft before Tasmania, is a big big deal. They didn't move up the board for Lindsay - they moved up for the academy players. Otherwise it makes no sense of the misery in the room and the desperation of trying to make a similar trade to get a future second back. Can we just have some accountability.

They moved up the board for Addinsall or Lindsay, really not hard to understand.

Do people think eagles also miscalculated and assumed they were getting Uwland at 2?

Did GWS move up for Harry Kyle?

Eagles clearly had Addinsall and Lindsay in a tier above the next best and were happy to pay saints f2 for either of them.

I fancy myself one of our least melty posters, but without further information the trade looks ****ing inept. At a minimum, the club would be well advised to get proactive about explaining the rationale.
What rationale would be acceptable or even make any sense? I think they failed and you cant hide it. I get some people are insanely optimistic but realistically you know they failed. Just accept it for what it is I suppose

I’d love NHH and Banfield/Evans with our remaining two main list spots. Okay letting Williams go, and then hoping like crazy for the remaining player out of Banfield/Evans to make it through to the rookie list.

There is still talent on the board. I think NHH’s a high risk, high reward type, but his ceiling is huge. Worth the gamble in my opinion.

Really happy with the 3 early picks.

Loved that we kept the order honest with bids. Would Patterson at 3 been enough to get Addinsall?

Three option on day 2 I am hoping for with the 4th pick
  1. Take BOB. We really need a pure mid and he fits the need
  2. Fallback of Thredgold as the future CHB
  3. Cash out for a F1 if on offer for NHH or Phillipou. Even if it costs a F3 going back
If a bid comes for Williams before that, let him go. Prioritise Banfield and Evans. I am thinking we likely only have 30 more picks in the ND. Only 10 picks in R2 - although there will likely be some bidding which may extend it a bit

North surely need an KPF and must be ready to rake either Archie or Emmett. Thredgold less a priority as they already have Whitlock.

Dogs hopefully bid on Ison but either NHH or Phillipou would be perfect for them.

The club site has no mention of the pick swaps to land Lindsay.

Silence...........
So who do we want at 29 and 34?

NHH
Philipou
Greeves
LeRay
Emmett
Swadling
Onley
Curtin

Based on rankings and need it would be

BOB

Greeves.

Then Phillipou
NHH
LeTay
Only
Swaddling

The club rated Murray, Addinsall and Lindsay and didn't want to risk Hawthorn grabbing Lindsay and suspected Gold Coast would match for the first two.

I don't support the trade - think we should hoard one more crop of picks before Tasmania come in, even if Saints win the flag a pick 40ish could still be useful for NGAs or trading purposes etc etc - but I can understand the rationale.

At least it's not our F2, I suppose.

I'd probably take Poo first, there is an arrogance with that boy that I'd like to see explored.

Just reading the melts about trading out the Saints F2.

In a night where we got great prospects in the first round, there are a bunch who are not happy Karens! Oh well, some are never pleased.

Let’s not focus on how happy the 3 prospects sounded in becoming Eagles. Let’s worry about what is likely to be a mid 30’s pick was used to get up the draft board in R1

Happy aswell. Maybe there was a few more clubs after Lindsay if the bids fell through so we had to pay up.

Who would you target with the next few picks?

One thing I will say is that all three draftees spoke really well and seem genuinely happy to come over to WA

Would love to know how hard we tried to trade up for Carlton’s pick 9 given that could have landed us Sharp and where we actually had Sharp in our internal rankings.

That and the logic behind burning the Saints F2 to move up one spot which I’m going to assume was to guarantee Lindsay if our bids failed
It was.

Hawks were well into him and conflicted about him or Nairn. Saints 2nd will be pick 35 by the time FS NGAs next year.

If Josh Lindsay rips it up - and all reports are he's a great pick and the best player available - the loss of a Saints F2 would long be forgotten.

Time will tell obviously.

And fair chance the Hawks had a buyer for that pick for Lindsay, most likely the Cats.

Really is one for the club to explain and put their spin on it
