Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

This is super annoying - I still can't find which picks have been used for bids.
It should be listed against each pick on the draft page.
I suspect they’ve done away with that as part of the coverage due to embarrassing graphics like Ashcroft for a 46/47/48/49 with 49 coming back or whatever it was in the end.

What I think is boring is they way people get called melters when they disagree about what the club is doing, by posters who think that we are going ok. You people are stargazers.
It's fine to disagree.

It's boring to read people continuously lose their shit over the same thing for weeks on end.

Many of us have been on here long enough to see many of the same group of people cry and bitch that we didn't win multiple flags after '18.

Nothing is ever good enough and everything is shit, in their eyes.

I honestly believe the WCE team didnt know Gold Coast made those trades....
There’s no way you actually think that and just aren’t looking to be the most offended one on here.

You think at no point in the last three days did they catch wind of trades that were borderline official on league socials, then plastered all over the coverage?

Which is assuming they only get this info through the channels us plebs do, and there’s not, you know, information available during the draft.

They may work out but with Barnett not looking like being much good we can afford another in our ranks
Its a very high cost to spend up for ruckmen. Too much imo

Multiple top 10ish picks on rucks, when we have Archer who seems more than capable already is excessive

Draft another ruckman later in the draft in 2 years time or recruit another Flynn type as backup should do the trick

Sometimes it is more about who you get.

Whilst I was more bullish on Lindsay half way through the carnival, his ineffective midfield time come middle of the year was disappointing. He slid out of my top 8 but was high in the next grouping. Then about a month ago upon further reflection, I saw him as what he is and not what I wanted him to become. He is a great ball distributor and the ball comes out of defence with accuracy and speed. Just what Mini is wanting.

Prior to the Cal insights into the order, I would have been more than happy to add our F3 or the Saints F2 to 13 to grab him. I believe the Doggies also had an offer to the Hawks and hence we had to pay a F2. I also do not know who our fallback would have been at that pick if we stayed put.

It’s almost like the AFL don’t want to highlight the cluster of late picks used to match a bid in the top 5

Why would Gold Coast make those pick trades before the draft if they weren't to match first round bids? Especially when it became clear in the days leading up to the draft what our strategy was. It played out exactly how Twomey (?) predicted.

Crazy to think they did those trades and then would be all like "nah, Eagles can have him".

Our strategy should have changed as soon as Gold Coast made those pre-draft trades.

Our strategy was to select/bid on the basis of our internal rankings. The club said that repeatedly predraft and said it again immediately post draft

Gold Coast trading for additional points didn’t change that strategy

Allowing our intent to bid on Murray and Addinsall to become known shouldn’t have happened- not sure how these things get out but somehow someone somewhere got wind of it. It gave the Suns the heads up to prepare accordingly although they may have done that anyway - they’ve been playing the points system for years and are clearly very adept at it

I honestly believe the WCE team didnt know Gold Coast made those trades....

For someone who is very quick to laugh at anyone/everyone for believing what the club says or defends their actions this is just silly

If you honestly think that the club didn’t know about those trades I don’t know what to say. By all means be critical of the trade but ease up with the hyperbole

I’m very happy with our picks from last night. The exciting thing is that all 3 have the potential to become elite A graders.

As a few have mentioned, given there was no Harley type option, I’m glad we didn’t use a high pick on a pure midfielder. There just won’t be opportunities next year.

These are the players we’ve brought in:

Duursma
CDT
Lindsay
Dev
Schoenberg
Macrae
Starcevich
Young
+ NGA’s + Banfield (hopefully)

The midfielders there are all 24 or younger and offer something a bit different despite being “inside” midfielders. Dev plays angry and frantic, Macrae is smooth and calm and Schoenberg is bigger body grunt.

Hopefully at least one of them become proper AFL level for us.

We're bringing in Robertson, Macrae and Shoenberg. Of those 3, I expect Dev to get a starting centre square role as the inside mid.

Kelly won't play FT mid, that boat sailed last year. Will start HFF and rotate with Hewett. If he doesn't pull his finger out, he probably gets dropped to WAFL like Gaff did.

IMO, something along the lines of:
C: Maric/Duursma, Dev/Graham, Allan/Davis
R: Reid/Flynn, Reid, McCarthy/Hewett

That's 3 new additions to the starting midfield from this year, 4 if Yeo gets over his injury issues.

Add Yeo in either Dev or Harley's spot(with Harley moving to C if Yeo's on ball).

I don't think any kid we bring in this year would have much of a meaningful impact to our midfield setup, as that's what the 3 rookies are being brought in to achieve. I don't think any of the 3 will be starters, or on the list, when we make finals again(maybe Dev) but they don't need to be. They just need to come in and out while the more talented kids develop and take over those roles.

Clearly there's still a ways to go to bring in talent but a lot of what we have on our list we haven't properly seen what they're capable of either. This year, we basically had no mids, next year we at least have some options for various.

Edit: Forgot to mention Clay Hall also in the midfield.
Thats the midfield perhaps but then that midfield is absolutely shithouse still.

Its not the drafts fault really. Its like 10% of the issue. Most of it stems from Starcevich deal, losing Chesser and replacing with nothing, losing Ryan and replacing with nothing who was a part of the midfield rotation, missing out on Warner and then combining those 2 with the need to pick a HB once again with a first rounder because thats the best of whats left....

All in all nothing worked together here. Reactionary decisions one after another that never formed part of any 12 month strategy is all the last 12 months have been.

Beau Addinsall at pick 18 after Gold Coast cant afford to match him with Paterson going at 3

Lets not ignore when the failure began to focus on the end point.

I personally reckon Lindsay looks way better than Addinsall in the highlights I've watched so am pretty excited to have him in the team.

It's the same tired posters who complain about everything looking for things to be upset about. The Saints will rise up this year. They've been gifted an amazing fixture. Channel 7 is making a documentary about them. The script has been written for their fairy tale season.

Call me a foolish optimist if you want, but melting over a pick that could potentially be as low as 45 instead of focusing on how exciting it is to have a really fantastic new player seems like such a waste of time.

Now we can enjoy watching the Saints rise up the ladder as we don't have to death ride them anymore. God knows their long suffering fans deserve some success.

If we were always looking to get CDT, then should of delisted Barnett free up another spot now we are stuck with only 2 more picks in main draft and look to take Banfield and Williams with them

For those that know more than me, what Onleys knock?

Endurance seems to the main issue. What was his 2km TT?

I haven't justified anything, that's just how you decided to interpret my posts.
You literally said "at least we tried to do something with it" and "I don't really give a shit that it happened because of all the mistakes the club's made recently".

If that's not justification, it's at least minimizing a big mistake.
We traded a F2 to go up 1 spot and ended up with our 3rd priority.

Your posting gives me Hinkley-supporter energy.
"We had a good go! Who cares that we ****ed it up and didn't succeed?"

At some point results matter, and the Eagles have run out of excuses.

While I’ve got you, because your intel has been good as per usual.

Didn’t think GC would match or didn’t think GC could match?

Huge distinction, interested if that level of detail has been shared.

Would is the word I had.

Thats the midfield perhaps but then that midfield is absolutely shithouse still.

Nobody said it'll compete for a flag but as we saw even just this year, those young blokes on the list can take it up to better midfields but they ran out of gas towards the end of games

Realistically, presuming #1 pick Duursma fulfils his potential(highly likely) and we pick up Warner at the end of '27(seems somewhat likely at this stage), that's a starting centre combo of Reid, Duursma and Warner. Even without Warner, we just need someone to step up and be a B-grade defensive mid. Could be Dev, Hall, etc. We're not planning for 2026, we're planning for 2028 and beyond.

If we were going to be relying on Ryan and Chesser to be mainstays for the future, then we would be in trouble.

Don't get me wrong, I liked what I saw from Chesser at the end of the season and my preference was to keep him but if it's a choice between say him and McCarthy, I know who I prefer.

All in all nothing worked together here. Reactionary decisions one after another that never formed part of any 12 month strategy is all the last 12 months have been.

You have precisely zero idea what the plan is. None of us do. We've just taken 2 future mainstays for our midfield at picks 1 & 2 and an elite distributor off HB who allows McCarthy to move into the midfield rotations.

Just as the glass isn't always half full, it isn't always half empty either.

You can't keep to the same strategy once it becomes known. What's that saying about no plan survives first contact with the enemy? Gold Coast knew of our plan, we should have adjusted and not been so stubborn. Bid on Gold Coast's top two with Pick 1 and we would have ended Day 1 with Duursma, CDT and Addinsall, with all our 2026 picks intact.

We were dumb.

You had me, right up until here...

God knows their long suffering fans deserve some success.
