They did trade out 4 pretty decent players

Just because we don't trade out any players with half an ounce of trade value and instead let them rot on our list until they're traded for pick 1675, doesn't mean other clubs aren't clever enough to trade out players with some value for the better of their club
I agree we made a massive error refusing to recognise the need to rebuild earlier. We should have traded out some players for picks in the 2019 - 2023 period.

But what about the fact that Gold Coast have 4 players rated in the top 17 of the draft in their academy in the first place (and therefore are eligible for the points based system where there is a massive discount on the draft capital needed to draft the player)? They must have a much bigger catchment pool than other clubs and are also not limited to aboriginal and non - Australian born kids like we and the other non - Northern clubs are. They can take any kid who is good enough that is in their zone, i presume. Thats a big advantage.

3 picks before us. If we they don't bid on Tylah do we take one of these and then have only one spot left for Tylah/Banfield/Evans if bids come in?

I’d say if there’s no Williams bid we’ll trade back slightly, gain a future asset at match Williams with our next pick.

Would not be opposed with just taking BPA though, depends if something silly like a F1 for the pick and our F2 is on the table.

The fact they can afford to trade these players because they’re getting replaced with top 5 picks is the issue, and it’s only going to get worse.

Theyll have guys like Rogers and Walter on the table next year and around we go again. It’s already self sufficient farming system and it doesn’t really matter what changes are made to the bidding system.
Require a round 1 pick for round 1 player (or within x picks) would have stopped them trading out top picks.
They couldn't have Petracca and their NGAs.

Probably depends upon which of our NGAs we rate in this cluster. If it's nobody or just Tylah, pick one of those listed and match a Tylah bid later. This would mean that Evans and Banfield may slip to the RD or be drafted elsewhere (which is not a big deal).

If we have Tylah and Evans/Banfield in there, pick Tylah.

add to that the pathetic talent list coming from WA, why is this so?

I don't believe any formal offers came for 1 and 2, clubs knew the price was high.
Sharp was never an option for us.
Pick 9 was not thought that much about after we knew we weren't a chance at getting it.
Appreciate your intel very much.
WC realistically put a high price on pick 2 and didnt get the bite from ESS they were expecting, thats ok.
Then ESS pick 9 which became 13 where several clubs tried to trade up to get Sharp including ADE with their 1st and F1st and assuming WC had a crack was too high a price and not going to happen if I am reading this correctly?

No way Harry Dean goes earlier than CDT. It is almost certain to have a hidden reason.
I would've been over the moon for Dean to be an eagle. Elite intercept defender. McGovern replacement for the next 10 years.

Instead blues matched and now they have weiterings replacement.

I thought the PSD and Rookie Draft was also today but looks like it's tomorrow.

AFL loves nothing more than squeezing every single bit of content for all it's got. Three days for the draft - spare me.

"Okay here we go - West Coast are on the clock, they've got 5 minutes to make their selection. While we wait here's a fresh trade that just occurred..."

12 minutes pass

"And West Coast have selected..."

"Let's cross to Ben Dixon with 4 too many questions as he interviews the draftee. Reminder that West Coast only have FIVE MINUTES to make their pick"

Three months ago if you said we would have draft three of the top 5 in the open pool (Duursma, CDT and Lindsay) people would be carrying a hard on for a ****ing week.

We trade F2, and yes, on the surface, it seems like a bad decision, but we draft a decent player in Lindsay, an elite distributor and someone that should be there and help when our window opens up.

At the end of the day, isn't that what it is all about?

Moving on I am more interested what will play out with BOB, NHH and Greeves + our kids + FROD/Curtin. How many spots are left, and what are the chances of BOB, NHH, Williams, Evans, and Banfield?

Should we keep an eye on/pick up FROD/Curtin in MSD/PSD in 2026 if they aren't on a list by the end of the week?

I don't know about anyone else, but can't they just simplify the **** out of the Draft and List categories?
Post-season, One National Draft and one list of x amount of players, none of this Cat A and B Rookie shit. Get drafted, happy days - miss out try again next year.

I struggle with all nuances, not to mention 95% of fans still don't have a clue about rules regarding RFA/UFA and Bidding systems. Fans really do lose out because of vAFL bullshit complexities when there is no need for it.

That was a bit weird.

I suspect however that even if a club made a selection in the first few seconds, they were told to take up most of the five minutes - or Gillon was told but then he would wait towards the end of the five minutes when Ben Dixon finishes his interview before striding up on stage. There was one (I think Sam Cummings going to Richmond) where I saw Gillon look at a draftee going back to his table, then he decided to start walking up to the stage.

As others have pointed out, it's a way to stretch out the event.

More interesting than the given away 2nd rounder (to me anyway for shits and giggles)is who we've ended up with by choosing Hawks picks over Carltons

By my rough calculations we've essentially ended up with Lindsay and Tyler Young where we could have Dyson Sharp and another early pick tonight (i think)?

Carltons 2nd rounder ended up at Sydney (after going through Hawthorn and back to Carlton) as a part of the Curnow trade and got eaten in a bid......i think....

Someone smarter than me should work it out properly so we can reopen the Hawks death ride thread 😎

had a power blackout a few minutes before the draft last night and it didn’t come back on until two hours later halfway through the first round. Thankfully doesn’t look like I missed much. I’ll take it as a sign that Lindsay is my player to watch, not the other two.

We only had the choice of Hawks vs Blues 1st rounder and not the others.

There’s no guarantee they’re rated that high by their draft years, especially van Rooyen, well and truly possible to get them second round or lower.
If we get BVR for a late 2nd rounder id be content. Highly unlikely though as we will be busy matching bids after the first round next year id imagine

I just dont see a list need for either of them at this stage, now we have Archer and CDT- assuming we use Archer as a ruckman obviously.
Flynn or BW will still be needed for a few more years at least as cover and to handle the #1 ruck spot anyway

Apart from being a flog, what's the actual knock on Greeves other than his cruising speed?

I'd take a 191cm bull accumulator with slick hands, good overhead ability, scoreboard impact and tendency to stand up in big moments over Tylah Williams every day of the week.

He's sharp lite, and I don't hate that with pick 29
