Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Wrong, quite a few clubs didn't expect them to match on that bid, not just Eagles.
A lot of people here and in the media thought that GC were going to match Adinsall.

If we thought we were getting Adinsall then we were played as suckers.

It was obvious when they were going to match Adinsall when they were collecting picks.

Nah cob, according to Ryan Gosling and a few others, our midfield is sorted already.

We've got TOO many mids if anything.

Quality highly rated players like Clay Hall, Harry Schoenberg, Dev, Brady Hough and Jack Hutchinson to name but a few.
Agreed, I thought that was a very odd take on our midfield

Every phantom had GC not matching, so there was no diversity of thought there, even if they did pretty much copy Twomey.

Grego is the forgotten guy down back. Is a beautiful kick & seems to always have time. Having Lindsay down back will help him greatly.

If McCarthy plays down back that’s 3 great ball users plus also Maric won’t be taking all the load so will hopefully improve.

Cole will be WAFL bound all year
Grego won't get a game in the backline barring a hippie club type incident for the foreseeable future
Getting Lindsay in cements that

We have two main list spots available so -

We can make one more live pick and still be able to match a bid on Williams but not Banfield if he is also bid on

OR

We don’t make another live pick and can then match bids on Williams AND Banfield

Effectively, using another live pick costs us the ability to match bids on two players meaning we’d be reliant on Banfield getting through the draft without a bid so we can rookie list him

Makes it very hard, if not impossible to get best available at 29, Williams and Banfield without risking Banfield getting a bid, which they wont do?

Do we therefore have to choose between Williams/Best available and then trade our 34 for future pick and/or late picks in this draft to match a possible late Banfield bid and if no bids he becomes rookie and we have Pick 1 in PSD?

We certainly have made this very difficult with the quality still available, but our team seems to keep disappointing us in tis area.

I hear you with the use of draft capital, but with Livingstone gone, Barnett likely gone and one of Flynn/Williams gone it’s well worth using a second rounder or later on a quality ruck prospect.

Maybe I’m not as hopeful of becoming a Archer a no.1 ruck as others
If Archer doesnt then CDT probably will.

Either way they only have to be able to be competent at it for 50% of the game each, and we know Archer is already pretty good at it from what weve seen, and hes still only 20.

As far as im concerned our ruck problem is solved, long term, re-look at it in 2 years time if Archer REALLY falls off but at this stage im not even thinking about another ruckman.

As I said already though, we wont have picks to take a 2nd round ruckman next year!!!
Kehn, McGlade, Shanahan, etc all to come

Exactly

Thinking maybe a match for Williams, (*including a slide back, maybe including someone's F2...*dreams are for free)
Match for Banfield.
Hope Evans goes through
Under no circumstances miss out on Banfield.

How so?

Reid, Hewett, Duursma, McCarthy. Then Hall/Gross/Allan to make up numbers

Quite the group if you ask me
So if we'd drafted cumming or sharp or any midfielder or one of our bids had been successful there's no chance they couldve forced their way into our premo midfield?

I didnt say they wouldnt get a game.

I said we wouldnt be able to properly explore what Hall/Gross/Allan can do in the middle because there would be too much competition for spots.
If we give Hall/Gross games like we should then the new draftee wouldnt be getting games, as Harley/Hewett arent going out for any of them, and we arent playing with a midfield consisting of entirely 21 and unders.

In a years time we will better know what we have, and can re-assess.

We have added Duursma to the long term midfield, likely Banfield+Evans(who knows though), and 3 mature agers clearly with the intention of hoping at least one of them becomes a regular.
We just added McCarthy at the end of last year too.

So no, I didnt say they wouldnt get games.

I am generally very intentional with my words, but people often skim over what I say going away with only one line of it lmao

EDIT: this is only the ones aged 25 and under - we still have Yeo/Kelly/Graham in there too lol

Is it a myth that this draft is deep. One of the reasons we din't open spots up is that this is a weaker draft than last year.
It seems like we will have many unhappy people if we miss out on someone.
We needed to use three picks for the best in the first round which should turn into gun Afl players.
Once we get to tonight it is hit and miss.
The one good thing is we are only a year away from another draft and we have a lot to delist if it is a better draft

Weren't the phantoms all published before Gold Coast's pick trades yesterday morning?

That's when things changed, but we stuck to an outdated plan.

They do continued updates or comments on it. Twomey had plenty of chances to change it leading up to the draft starting.

It's not some giant leap to think GC wouldn't match. They didn't need Addinsall. That's what the Eagles were banking on, not the points.
