Big difference when you're using multiple third and fourth round picks to accumulate the points.
The by-product of this that no one mentions is that other clubs close their way up the order by being rid of picks for points. If the AFL messes with it too much, this will stop. For example look at what is proposed to happen tonight. North get themselves into the first round because we want points this year and next. Essendon get themselves a 3rd first rounder where the likelihood of getting a good player dramatically increases as opposed to picks 25+. If the AFL make it harder to use the points system, lower clubs no longer get to move their way into extra higher end picks.

F/S players often get excessive hype when compared with their peers, it's laziness by both media and fans.
Last year we were discussing whether we'd need to trade up ahead of the Saints to get Ben Campo for a similar reason.

Not laziness - marketing.

Dean is tied to Carlton, ergo a few hundred thousand members of the public are very likely to click on anything that has his name in the title.

They run an article on Xavier Taylor and his mum is probably gonna read it. For 99% of the population, even the footy-following population, his name means nothing at this stage.

"For 99% of the population, even the footy-following population, his name means nothing at this stage." - And here I was thinking that the point of reading was to learn.

You are correct it is driven by marketing - but that is also lazy journalism. It is easy to write a half baked article on Dean, his links to Carlton and his Dad falling off the 1995 premiership stage safe in the knowledge that it doesn't have to be very good to get the views and reposts etc. it is much more difficult to write an engaging article on Xavier Taylor and why the supporters various clubs likely to be drafting him should be excited and learn his name.

The AFL media industry is incredibly lazy - and takes the easy option every time (see how many "articles" are just club press releases)

Except for McGowan at The Age, the rest of the media have been pretty late to the party.

And Twomey for example isn't claiming that a bid is going to come higher because he's "hyping Dean up", it's because his contacts are telling him a bid will come earlier than he originally thought.
It is why Twomey gets the top 10 pretty much spot on every year - it isn't because he is a great talent scout - it is because he is being told what the clubs are going to do.

Oh they are - but that's because they're not interested in journalism as journalism, only as an avenue to revenue.

Ultimately - they're not influencing, nor are the trying to influence, the draft order. They'll discuss what gets engagement for now because there are very few players who any given fan-base is invested in. Simple as that.

But probably digressing too far from the thread subject now :p

not claiming they are trying to influence the draft order - just they are too lazy to do the work. Too many of our so called journalists are just propaganda for the AFL because the symbiotic relationship generates revenue while the supporters get screwed. You only have to look at "wild card round", the WA in February state of origin or the constant push for a night grand final to see the damage.

"but that's because they're not interested in journalism as journalism, only as an avenue to revenue" I see it as a real issue in society in general that producing producing rubbish journalism is viewed as the best way to generate revenue.

Doesn’t change much if they just drop the discount to 0, which they really should. Makes no sense to me that you get a discount in addition to priority access to a player.

If they start changing the DVI or rules around picks needed to match then that’s a different story.

Nothing for the investment in the programs, including the many more that don’t make it vs the few that do?

No need to make it prohibitive.

Could argue that priority access to talent is reward enough but it’s a fair point.

I think the changes they have made this year have brought it a lot closer to being fair value, in particular for top end talent.
