And a song to sing as we watch,

Hey Matty Clarke by Kevin (Random260) Wilson :

Hey Matty Clarke you campaigner, where the **** is Sharp
I’ve looked at all these other spuds and there’s no one that I like
I wrote you a ****ing letter and posted about it twice
You dopey ****ing Richmond fart, you forgot my ****ing Sharp

If I wanted a stupid ruckman type, I would’ve bloody asked
And this half back flank and temu mid, you can shove right up your arse
You’ve stuffed the bloody order up, it’s enough to make you spew
But it’s not just me who’s snakey, SGIO is dirty too

Next time I come to see ya, I’m going to punch you in the guts
And I’ll sack the other recruiting knobs and kick Toddy in the nuts
You just wait 'til next year when you go back to the draft
And me and me little GIO come stomping through the door
And we'll say, yeah, you wait for it

Hey Pyke and Woosh you smell his breath
And check his bloodshot eyes
And don't listen to him eagles fans 'cause he tells ****ing lies
He's just a ****ing useless campaigner and he's not even very bright
'Cause the stupid ****in' w***er, forgot me ****in' Sharp

Hey Matty Clarke you campaigner, where the **** is Sharp
I’ve looked at all these other spuds and there’s no one that I like
I wrote you a ****ing letter and posted about it twice
You dopey ****ing Richmond fart, you forgot my ****ing Sharp

It's funny how it interrupted the lyrics XD

After thinking about it, I really want Greeves at pick one today.

He clearly has defiencies in his game, but qe have added four incredibly athletic players so far with an outside leaning profile.

If attitude is an issue, missing the main draft might alter that as well.

We are terrible at contested ball. That is his strength. Get the ball out to Harley, Duursma and Hewett. He is worth a one year gamble.

Meh. Every year people lose their shit over X player not being picked and every year that player ends up a spud.

Its not about player x.

Its about putting ourselves into a position where we dont have any control or choice on matching players late and players who we spent years developing or a father son in a position of need.

Obviously other clubs rated our nga's and father son. We basically said, if you rate players we have priority access to you can have them.

We put retaining old veterans and struggling fringe players ahead of our future.

Piss poor planning results in piss poor outcomes. We looked like amateurs last night.

Rubbish. Gold Coast destroyed us this draft and trade period as did Brisbane
It's almost like the draft is weighted so heavily in their favour It's not funny

All the club knows best/que sera sera stuff in here is just astonishing. As if the club doesn't make mistakes repeatedly. Yes, it's all done and dusted, but no need to defend it.
Every draft pick is a gamble somewhat relative to the pick number. That's why a lot of us wanted Banfield & Evans. The potential talent is there and we could've gotten them for a bargain using 3rd to 5th round picks, or with a rookie spot if they slipped past the draft.
We could've at least been able to give it a consideration if we delisted Barnett and moved Cripps to the rookie list. Opposing either of the above is absurd imo. Barnett is barely WAFL quality and Cripps is possibly in his final year and should have had no issue with it. It doesn't affect his salary and eligibility to play AFL. Again, other clubs have done it, so why wouldn't we?
The point is we didn't. So why cry about it? Okay fine be puzzled or even upset at the decisions for 5 minutes then move on with your life.

Or don't.

100% this.
I can’t help but feel embarrassed by our list management team.
How could you justify one more year of football for Cripps or Cole over the chance to give young talents like Banfield and Evans a crack.
I still can’t believe just how poor we were, I’m trying to be excited about a draft haul, but it should have been so much more.

Huh? Next years delistings are not gonna be a problem

Delist

Harry Barnett
Jamie Cripps
Tom Cole
Matt Flynn
Harvey Johnston
Rhett Bazzo

Id then consider that Newton/Long are both fighting for the 1 spot to make it 7. This isnt including that people may ask to leave too. Id expect Jack Williams to get a ton of trade interest as well.

I dont think next years crop of delistings is a gotcha moment here
Apart from the fact that two of the players you’ve named wouldn’t have been on the main list in the scenario we get Evans and Banfield. Now you need to come up with two more names.

Players traded away are likely another pick we take.

What about the possibility that they just assumed that Williams would be the only one who would attract a bid and got that badly wrong?

I doubt they didn’t consider the possibility that there’d be bids on other than just Williams. It’s just that they decided that if there was, they wouldn’t be putting themselves in a position to match - I don’t agree with that but to think there was an assumption they’d get through I think is wrong. I do think they hoped they’d get through

To be clear, I’m not defending the decision as I think Cripps should be on the rookie list and at least Banfield on the main list as of now but it’s clear it was a decision to bring no more than 5 players onto the main list through the draft.

Allen was ranked higher than all of our club tied players so we drafted him and Williams was the highest ranked so he was the one we matched

Oh in that case

Matt Owies (re rookie to take Cripps spot)
Noah Long
Harry Barnett
Matt Flynn
Harvey Johnston
Rhett Bazzo

That would give us 5 picks in the draft + room for a trade

Players traded away are likely another pick we take.

This part is funny given we just traded away Liam Ryan for a pick upgrade only....

I have had all night to process it.

We were ruthless, and stuck fat with taking best available talent. And the signs we were comfortable losing the 2 WA lads was that we committed to McCrae and Schoenberg.

Brisbane have a free hit on Evans and he can he developed under the best midfield in the comp. Dev 2.0.

Saints dirtied us and have now taken three wa boys 3 yrs in a row from under us. From now on, they are the new cats. Banfield, if he even gets a game, will be played out of position and soon enough Ross the boss will treat like shit.

Ultimately, we we weren't ruthless enough though.

Should someone else have been delisted, traded or rookied, yes.

1 Cole. Looking at how we have bolstered our defence he is a dead man walking.

2. Cripps had to be re-rookied. Sadly, his experience on the training track and even on the WAFL field will be crucial. But no need for a primary list spot.

3. Barnett, I know he is a big man and they take time, but boy he better show something this year. I would even argue, that before the MSD, if he isn't showing signs, delist and pay out and open a spot then.

So for me, we could've have 1-2 list spot more last night, and taken one of the WA lads.

Rookie draft today i am hoping for
A ruckman or key defender.

And if one or more of Long/Johnston/Bazzo aren’t delistable. If we have better NGA/FS prospects (likely) and want to take more than 5 picks in the draft, we had 2 trade ins this year 2+ 1 fa the year before, what if we acquire more than 1 trade in?

We didn’t rate either Evans or Banfield as main list worthy, I personally disagree with that assessment on both fronts but the West Coast recruiters have watched a lot more of them than you or I.

The club which many describe as soft does something ruthless and instead of people accepting it for what it likely is (us not believing Banfield/Evans are worth of a list spot, Evans confirmed as much in his case), they decide that we just forgot we could put Cripps on the rookie list.

My thoughts on how to reform the draft:
  • Introduce differential calculus to the points system, make clubs hire mathematicians to figure out how the system actually works
  • Anytime a club drafts a player, if Gold Coast say "excuse me!", they automatically gain that player at no cost
  • Start the broadcast at 4PM but the first selection occurs at 6PM, and every selection after that takes a minimum of 60 minutes to be announced. Creates more of a spectacle and keeps people glued to their TVs longer.
  • When a player is drafted, they must get on a webcam live feed and do a 90 minute interview with a full-time Fox Footy journalist while their family and friends sit in the background. If they do not attend this their AFL contract is legally void.
  • Nick Daicos highlights to play in the bottom right of screen at all times

I agree with most of this but think they got a bit greedy once they had successfully improved the draft picks by bidding to eliminate quite a few picks after the clubs involved had to match. Allen is a pure wingman who is injured while Banfield is also rated as a wingman but with much more to his game. There’s not much between them in terms of speed and endurance and in this situation the club would normally pick a local player. Somebody decided to take a punt on the chance they could get both if Banfield slid to the rookie draft. This was never on as the tip was the Saints were interested. Poor decision! They were never going to get all of the NGA players though as they simply did not make the space…..as you say.
