Dane Rampe was denied at several drafts and didn’t land a spot on an AFL list until the age of 22. But ever since being rookie-listed in November 2012, the key defender has seized his opportunity. Rampe made his AFL debut in Round 1, 2013 and played his 150th match in 2019. He’s an All Australian, an emergency for the greatest NSW team of all time and a Bob Skilton medallist, and he’s led the Swans as a co-captain with Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker since 2019. It doesn’t matter if the opposition’s best forward is a tall or small; so versatile and reliable is Rampe that he’s always assigned to the toughest task in defence. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 37; 2013 AFL draft rookie elevation (Sydney) selection No. 90.

Lloyd would be more likely, I suspect, to be swayed by an offer from another club. No club can unilaterally sign a DFA: the player has to agree. I can’t see Ramps doing so, especially as this will almost certainly be his last season.

(Other clubs can, however, sneak in and pick up a delisted player in the rookie draft before the delisting club can pick them. Can’t recall that happening - not in the rookie draft.)

There is too much risk for a club to try and draft a player who doesn't want to come without having the benefit of any medicals etc. Rampe, I'm quite sure, is committed to living in Sydney. He said as much a few years ago when he had his last big contract extension. I doubt it has changed. His whole lifestyle revolves around the beach and the eastern suburbs from what I can tell. Of course, people can always change and you can never be 100%.

If you did it you'd have to treat it as a working holiday or short term posting. OK for a single bloke but not great with a family. I waited until my kids were grown and out of the house.

Maybe North. Eagles with a young family maybe not but moving back to Victoria might work. If that happened I doubt anyone would begrudge him.

I could see Rampe courted to North to join with the great man in the midfield.
Two years at exhorbitant amounts. I can see it.

And I would welcome him back at the end of his tenure. Would be good in coaching and man management.

Do you not think their managers both wouldn't have already had these discussions with other clubs?

This is correct. If a player doesn't want to get snapped up by another club then they simply refuse to do the medical for them. No club with any governance would draft a player with no medical.

Such a credit Ramps' competitiveness and determination that he performed so strongly in today's time trial. For Ramps to run a PB as a 35 year old is pretty awesome I reckon.

But watching him yesterday reminded me of why he’s a champion.

He just knows when to go up for the spoil, when to stay down, where to go to stop his opponent leading out …. and does everything with 100% commitment.

Some of his 3rd man up spoiling yesterday was just superb.

His knighthood was well earned.

It also does show why we NEED to periodically 'rest' him though. He needed that rest a couple of weeks ago. Could he have played sure, did he have to no. Feel at 7-1 we are getting towards the territory where we can sort of play your Dane, Grundy, etc rests.

I'll concede I was guilty of this – I was glad we kept him on as depth and for what he'd bring to the VFL side, but wasn't sure he was still up to AFL level.

Glad to say I was very wrong. I think he's being helped by the fact that we have other key defenders to rely on now, and an injury to McCartin or Melican doesn't mean he has to play undersized.

However I then went on to retire him him to his face: I asked him if he had given any thought to who he might pass on his jumper number to. He just smiled and politely shook his head. But I persisted, "you know, like Jude passed the jumper on to you before he retired". Still nothing but polite smiles and shakes of the head. I'm pretty sure somewhere along the way I confessed that I was desperate to get his signature because I feared I had nearly missed my chance and he wouldn't be on the list much longer. Then I went outside and had a private cringe session.

He’s been great this year no longer needing to be the main man down back (which has already been mentioned)

Also agree that he’ll need a couple of scheduled breaks during the season to keep him fresh

If he can play on the 3rd 4th or 5th best forward every week he might be able to go on for another season yet!!
