Andrew Bassat article with Mick Warner in H/S 22/11

I’ll put it out there….

I LOVE what we are doing/ have done over the past few years.
Everything since getting RTB back in fact.
(Even the firing of Ratts.)
We’ve made noise. We’re relevant again.
I love that we never “walk past” something that needs to be fixed.
We are not too scared to take highly considered risks.
And to rock the boat.
Win the damn thing or die trying.
Heaven knows, nothing else has helped over the past 60 years.
I put this all down to Bassat.

And as our new motto says “I’m all In”.

Ross has obviously never walked past the badly stacked pallets out back

Yeah Coons has no idea. Like Josh Jenkins, I don’t know how either have a gig on radio!

At least Coons seems to not take himself too seriously. Jenkins is arrogant and boring in equal measure. Coons is like if some stoner skater got a gig on radio. I don't think knows what he's going to say before he does it.

JJ is like listening to some train nerd talk about his special interest in detail no matter what he discusses. They talk racing and he's off flogging off about Geelong and all the great players he played with and how he was also a basketball star.

Bassat has to get most of the credit. He's undone a lot of catastrophic decision making of the past. Lyon was absolutely the right choice for us too. He's been the architect of the backroom of the footy department. We'd run ourselves so badly down that no-one inside knew how a normal football club set itself up.

We were also on the nose outside the club too. Staff only wanted in if they weren't able to get a job elsewhere. I know of someone that went and interviewed at the Saints and pre premiership Melbourne and said that the professionalism at the Dees was so far above the Saints that he didn't even think about it.

I got to see inside the club in the early days of the move back to Moorabbin. That was when I really went negative on the club administration. It was probably more unprofessional than the local junior footy club my son played for at the time.

Bassatt has been able to identify what was wrong and address it while bringing people along. That's often the hardest part with organisational change.

1000% this.
Passion, drive and the smarts to see it through.

He's got a kind of gentle ruthlessness too. He comes across as quite measured and humble and seems to be able to spell out his vision without railroading everyone else's vision. Seems happy to learn as he goes rather than talk in certainty and bluff through overly confident language.

Carlton and Essendon get locked down at boardroom level. Lots of chest puffing egotists wanting control of everything and undermining each other's efforts. Bassat seems to have the place all in one direction which is rare in any organisation.

Wowsers.

The left-field thinking has shifted to the boardroom where the Saints are considering a plan to buy and develop land around RSEA Park to help shore up the club’s long-term finances.
The Saints’ 83 poker machines are set to be sold and relocated, they’ve set a target to sign 100,000 members by the end of the decade (current count is almost 66,000) and will have a stand-alone VFL team next season, giving them full control of player development.
Corey Enright has been promoted as head of game plan and strategy above an assistant coaching team that includes Robert Harvey, Brendon Bolton, Lenny Hayes, Damian Carroll and Brendon Goddard and the club is exploring a move for Lyon to report directly to Dilena, instead of the head of football, following the recent departure of David Misson.
“David has now left and decided to do other things, so we’re taking the opportunity to look at our organisation and make sure we have the best structure for success,” Bassat said.
The Saints have also introduced a creche and concierge service for the families and partners of staff and players, reignited their sons and daughters academy and “boosted focus on First Nations representation and wellbeing”.

Nice puff piece. Almost made me think St Kilda will be a contender. Then the reality came back to my mind.

Brisbane got a top 6 player. Gold Coast got 4 first rounders. St Kilda paid pick 7 to Gold Coast for a player who was playing VFL last year.

Maybe St Kilda can get close to finals. That’s about it. This competition is now a two-tiered system without an official label of such.

In my 40s, as a Saints supporter, I am not sure if I see a premiership in my lifetime.

That last season under ratten before bassat stepped in was pretty bad. What an utter shambles.

Well with Basset in charge I’m all for suring up our financial position by buying property. He and his bro know what’s up.

Goldy have been given the GWS load up. Lose mature talent and bring in mass kids. A solid well drilled side will beat a high turn over list most times. Hopefully that keeps going.

Brisbane are losing players on the edges. Hopefully they are satiated too.

Agree.
Expected Giants to have won a couple of flags by now given the gifts they got originally. But they’re pretty much back with the pack.
Let’s hope the same fate befalls the Suns.

He'd be perfect for the Victoria Police chief commissioners job

Annual report is out.

Also as a side note at the AGM they will be making some amendments to the clubs constitution
Members will be able to vote on it.
The club does have explanatory notes on what is changing

Small loss for the year albeit we paid down $1.5 million of our $6million debt ?.

Jack Steele on his Saints exit H/S 30/11. Not a bitter man, but understanding of the situation
