Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

I’m over the moon to see the Hawks show some faith with young Ollie. We have pushed the NGA path to no avail and he’s been down to training …… he’s already been welcomed to our club pre getting drafted!

But it goes both ways I guess Hawks know a bit about the young man and I’m sure he knows a bit about the standards/expectations of the club/Sam so grab the opportunity with both hands son!

I concur with Davo on Ollie being more of a forward than Mid. In due time we will realise he is a steal given how he competes in fwd half & kicks goals and then mix it up in the middle.

He now has the fire to prove many detractiors wrong and can play 2 positions which means he is more likely to get a debut sooner than later.
It’s a good shout and having Gunston to learn off could make him exactly that and very good at it. As a rookie pick a total no brainer his performances were outstanding this year and has a lot of football attributes and the rest can we developed. This should sting and looking back could be a huge defining moment for his career and obviously o hope that’s true. Welcome Ollie fantastic you are a mighty hawk!

hahaha sorry to be so critical.

I appreciate this being put together - it's my fault for assuming it was a 'best-of' reel rather than a full game controibution video.

It's appreciated 🙏
I’m glad you backtracked so well done. noobermensch does gods work as it relates to allowing us draft enthusiasts to assess prospects realistically.

Ned Long played 25 games this year for a preliminary finalist, and he's no more an athlete than Ollie.

Reckon he'll end up playing a lot of footy for us.
Elite distance runner.

Concerns around Ollie’s running capacity are valid, though not the end of the world. He’ll need to work hard to improve his work without the ball

Watching footage he doesn’t look slower than say Tom Green or Cripps.. feel like it’s being overstated.
Makes quick decisions by the looks and good skills. Him getting mid 30’s disposals also makes me think he covers the ground ok…

I reckon this guy is a classic case of something going wrong and then the whole league being spooked about it and walking away.

e.g. yes it is bad that he didn't do X or Y. But every club has taken this to mean "DO NOT TOUCH" rather than "maybe we just use a later pick".

The position we are in as a club is that we have to take some chances if we are gonna leapfrog the queensland teams in the next few seasons.
I have my own theory with this. Every draft year there are generally a top 5-15 standouts but then a whole bunch of players to pick from Australia wide of very even capabilities. As a recruiter faced with 4-5 options of comparable abilities I think subconsciously you could be looking for any reason to NOT pick someone and make the decision easier. Never bought into the whole “we can’t have more teams, the talent pool isn’t deep enough” argument. This kid is a special talent, it will come down to how much he wants it and whether he is in the right environment to develop his game to the next level

Don’t know much about him but is he a Ned Long type
I was going to post this but you got to me first. His build and running technique are very similar to Ned. This was the first thing that came to mind when watching vision of him.

The difference is Ollie is a good user of the footy has the ability to play forward. Ned is better defensively though.

So yes, there are some similarities between them (mainly physically). This is just my personal opinion though from watching replays and highlights.

Edit: Just to add. I am absolutely stoked we nabbed him. The fact we got him in the rookie draft is a bonus. As most have said, he needs to use this as motivation to put in the hard yards. If he does, I think we have a player.

His use by hand and foot is quality. Additionally he is able to go forward, take marks and kick goals. This is what separates him from Ned Long. He definitely has more upside.

I've always been pretty keen on greeves, and thought his speed and defensive intent was more just an attitude issue rather than him not being able to do it. And going through rookie me centrals scouting notes about him last year they were constantly talking up his speed and power against a draft class much stronger than this was. So how can you possibly lose it in one season. Is it that figjam personality and he picks and chooses when he wants or does he have an issue with his body?

POV: If we drafted Greeves as a forward nobody would be commenting on his speed.
I could see him becoming our new Roughead in this fwd/mid role.
Would argue it'd be even more glaring. Pretty much every elite forward in the league is super quick for their height.

You can be slow as a midfielder if you're big or strong enough, forwards need to create separation or they're just going to get chopped off every time the ball comes in.

Greeves is not slow for his size.

Green and Cripps make it work because they are so elite on the inside that it balances out their weaknesses on the outside and defensively.

The big question is the rest of Greeves game going to be good enough to do the same?

Green butchers the ball. Greeves is a pretty darn good user, and can go forward as a lead up or contested marking target.

I was cautious on him for an early pick as the risk is you miss out on a better player or more of a sure thing than a guy who there are a few doubts on parts of his game. But at pick 12 in the rookie draft there was no better option and in my view he's much much better than many of the 60 taken in the national draft.

Look at the highlights the club shared, it shows him consistently hitting targets with kicks, running players down for tackles, taking contested marks, nailing a long set shot, finding space, running away from players, kicking a long goal from 60m easily clearing the line.

The play at 15 seconds is probably the most impressive, running out of half back, gives it off then runs passed the players to receive a handball, stops on a dime perfectly judging the space available amongst 5 defenders closing in, steadies and hits a nice short kick before anyone gets to him.

I have my doubts on him getting caught a bit but he'll either thrive in an elite environment and be a gun, or he'll dominate VFL but struggle to find time and space at AFL if he doesn't improve 2nd efforts, endurance and explosive running.

I watched his highlights a few times and couldn’t find any “issues”. His skills look elite and he find plenty of space and his confidence allows him to do a lot of things others don’t.

I think he will go past a few pretty quickly once his up and running and over the injuries. I think we got pretty lucky to get him in the rookie draft.

Once your in the main side, if your skills stand out against elite pressure it becomes pretty obvious who gets a game, he just looks like a kid who will relish that pressure

These are the type of players we should target every year in the rookie draft, and not just recycle ♻️ players every year by plays that have been on the senior list.

Rookie players that they we have got of rookie draft

Micheal Osborne
Robbie Campbell
Brad Sewell
Clinton Young
Matt Suckling
Luke Breust
Will Langford(NSW upgrade)

The last time we got a player from the Rookie draft was Breust in 2008 that became a player and not a recycled player.

This isn't great we have wasted way to draft players that show something.

There is plenty to work with young Greeves. I know it’s highlights but he looks like a smart footballer, good kick/vision, clean touch and can take a strong mark. If he works hard and can get the best out of himself he could become a bloody good footy player. Looking forward to watching him over summer.
