Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

These are the type of players we should target every year in the rookie draft, and not just recycle ♻️ players every year by plays that have been on the senior list.

Rookie players that they we have got of rookie draft

Micheal Osborne
Robbie Campbell
Brad Sewell
Clinton Young
Matt Suckling
Luke Breust
Will Langford(NSW upgrade)

The last time we got a player from the Rookie draft was Breust in 2008 that became a player and not a recycled player.

This isn't great we have wasted way to draft players that show something.
Conor Nash?

Ned Long.....

Let's assume he has some FIGJAM attitude, to ne honest I dont mind a young player having some it. You have to believe in yourself to make it the afl and if you do, you are pretty great at what you do.

I believe its more what culture do have at your club where you put that FIGJAM belief into a positive aspect.

We have players at the club who have FIGJAM mentality, but express in a positive way that motivates other around them, gets the fans excited, get opposition players frustrated.

Gilham another one

Conor Nash?

Wasn't taken in rookie draft

Ned Long.....

Didn't become a player at the Hawks.

Maybe it is a indicator of something that Greeves thread is at 8th page while others are at pg 5 and LeRay is at Pg 3.

This was only a couple of months back.
You don't go from a top ten prospect to not being called because you're a bit slow or need to build a tank etc.

Whatever the issue is it has nothing to do with anything on field

Maybe he is just a different type of kid that interviews poorly and does not fit the norm ... and so was overlooked.
No-one wanted Dusty when he was shopped around : A shy guy who only wanted to play footy and get paid well and be kept out of the spotlight.
That Dusty fair-well game... while well intentioned.... you could see he hated having to do that... it was unfair on him. Some people want acknowledgment, other just want to play.

Until firm facts emerge, I am "Team Greeves."

Ned Long is a battler and always will be.
Let's finish the Ned long comparison stuff. The only connection to the two is their height and perceived midfield position. Otherwise, there is nothing in common for these two players. One is an endurance athlete, the other is not. One is skilled by foot, the other is not. One will be a player in a good team, the other will be a component to a premiership.

How long is a base rookie contract these days, 1 or 2 years?

The U17 highlight video he looks like he moves much better being a bit leaner. A midfielder that doesn’t look to be a weak link in quick transition will work well with the way we play.

Interested to see what role they have pigeonholed for him at BH

Standard rookie contracts are 1 year, though can be longer by agreement. People first brought in on the senior list get 2 years. Top 20 in the ND are forced onto 3 years to ensure the Suns don't lose any of their high draft picks.

I'm Team Greeves too. I don't think he is top 10 in the draft as I think there are some things that can catch him out in AFL that you can get away with in juniors. However his draft position puts him as 65 out of the 66 players then entered the AFL in the 2 drafts(excluding players like stringer who were re-rookied). He is way better than that, I also think he's better than being ranked 5th of our 5 pick ups.

He was Eastern Rangers best player, he was Vic Metro's best player, he was in the AA team. He played in the futures game with and against all those guys taken in the top 10 or so and looked as good or better than all of them.

1xaspect that I think may have caused a slide is that it was clear in February that we wanted him and he wanted Hawthorn. so clubs knowing he needed 2 years didn't want to risk that he'd request a trade to Hawthorn eventually anyway. I was thinking this when the NGA got rejected, that clearly we had a mutual desire for him to play at Hawthorn so if he ended up elsewhere we would always have that in our mind.

Waiting for Ollie videos to drop, maybe he is straight into preseason training

Haven't seen this posted here. Seems thrilled.

Ps : also has more engagement compared to posts about other draftees. Seems to have lot of well wishers.

Has a lot of well wishers because he’s the only one of our draftees that people actually connected with us beforehand. It’s always gratifying to see a kid train with the club, be linked in the media and then picked up.

Beyond that, he’s also the most highly credentialed player we’ve picked up since the Wiz. Ranges co-captain, CTL premiership, AA, Vic Metro MVP.

Nothing in the post count other than the fact that Olllie was more talked up - and down - than the others and slid rather spectacularly from touted top 15 to one of the last rookies to be picked up. Lots of divided opinions and plenty to discuss.

I'm really glad we picked him up. Overall I have a feeling this will turn out to be one of our strongest draft hauls for a while. Can't wait to follow their development.

Based on what I saw of him today at his first session, the question marks on his capability to run and transition in the modern game are absolutely there.

It’s all in front of him now.

Can see why us and other clubs wouldn't risk a high pick on him based. We saw with DGB that he was last in the running day 1 and never really got up to speed.

Hopefully Ollie can get there, so much of AFL is just running. If you can't keep up with your opponent in defence the whole structure goes out and they get overlap and a walk in goal.
