And a song to sing as we watch,

Hey Matty Clarke by Kevin (Random260) Wilson :

Hey Matty Clarke you campaigner, where the **** is Sharp
I’ve looked at all these other spuds and there’s no one that I like
I wrote you a ****ing letter and posted about it twice
You dopey ****ing Richmond fart, you forgot my ****ing Sharp

If I wanted a stupid ruckman type, I would’ve bloody asked
And this half back flank and temu mid, you can shove right up your arse
You’ve stuffed the bloody order up, it’s enough to make you spew
But it’s not just me who’s snakey, SGIO is dirty too

Next time I come to see ya, I’m going to punch you in the guts
And I’ll sack the other recruiting knobs and kick Toddy in the nuts
You just wait 'til next year when you go back to the draft
And me and me little GIO come stomping through the door
And we'll say, yeah, you wait for it

Hey Pyke and Woosh you smell his breath
And check his bloodshot eyes
And don't listen to him eagles fans 'cause he tells ****ing lies
He's just a ****ing useless campaigner and he's not even very bright
'Cause the stupid ****in' w***er, forgot me ****in' Sharp

Hey Matty Clarke you campaigner, where the **** is Sharp
I’ve looked at all these other spuds and there’s no one that I like
I wrote you a ****ing letter and posted about it twice
You dopey ****ing Richmond fart, you forgot my ****ing Sharp
A Quick Ai rendition: https://suno.com/s/blQP3cSnulhqYb5g
It's funny how it interrupted the lyrics XD

Harley Reid protection for hire.
Nah if they are in to Protect Harley then clearly they are...

I believe Carlton only have 1 spot left for a SSP and will have Elijah Hollands training with them to get his spot back

Walley is going to have to train very strongly to earn a spot. Has just been taught a harsh lesson that things shouldn’t be taken for granted. Up to him now to show he’s learned from it

Absolutely no way of knowing exactly why the club didn’t add him, or if it was justified, and they’re not going to publicly say why. But the fact they decided to leave a spot unfilled rather than add him to the list, quite literally for free, should be taken as a good indicator there were significant issues

It’s a shame because he clearly has talent, and it may well be someone else (Carlton possibly) could be the beneficiary of the lesson he’s been given
I thought the AFL recently changed the NGA rules to allow clubs to have dibs on their academy kids for 3 years? I guess that doesn't count if another club grants them an SSP spot?

Very interesting read.

Bombers came for pick 2 and we valued it as much as pick 1.

Cumming and Robey mentioned as next on our board.

If Essendon didn’t get Sharp, Lindsay was next on their board.

We tried multiple times to move up. Dovaston was a target.

Like most thought, this explains the F2 to move up one spot.

The Eagles had used that extra second-rounder to secure the selection, knowing Hawthorn was offering it to other rivals too. They also knew if the Suns matched their bids, only Lindsay was available of that tier of players they had ranked, so prioritised surety over the chance another club pushed up with a better deal.

Lindsay, a good friend and long-term Vic Country teammate of Duursma, fitted the bill for West Coast as a kicker who could add polish to its mix.

Also could’ve missed on Allen

If the Bombers had matched, the Dockers would likely have placed a bid on Tylah Williams, which they did at their next live pick (No.39).

Not only that:

Early bid (by gws) on Harry Kyle meant that many swans picks got wiped out, bringing in extra points for GC enabling them to actually match addinsal. Gc made some other deals with dogs, getting them to within 5 points of not being able to match. Damn you GWS.

Adelaide offered 2 first rounders for Essendon sharp pick to which they said no.

Josh Lindsay was last of the players we ranked in that tier and hawks were shopping their pick. So we moved up, otherwise we would be in next tier of players. Many others would have taken Lindsay earlier if sharp or dovanston was gone. Essendon would have gone for him at 13.

So yes, we panicked hey? Sounds like we remained agile in face of what was developing.

Very interesting article.

Also shows how highly Sharp was rated. Melbourne weren't interested, hence Essendon were confident he'd slide to their third pick, but everyone else seemed to have a dip at getting up the order to get him.

In general though, it makes all the melts in here about the trades and the matching bids etc., seem a bit like the bed wetting it was. We clearly had a strategy, and we did all we could to get it done, but it didn't quite come off, but we still got Lindsay, who seemed to have a lot of interest from teams above us and could have feasibly gone from the Melbourne picks through to where we got him.

The Essendon chat for pick 2 will be interesting to see what the details were. 2 of their top 10 picks included, will be interesting to see what was going back.

Eagles wanting pretty much the same trade for pick 2 as pick 1 indicates they clearly rated Duursma and CDT the two best players in the draft by a fair bit.

Still regret we couldn't get up to Sharp with a later pick, but hopefully CDT especially can find a role and deliver on his promise.

Does it?

I think if anything it highlights how highly rated CDT was.

Adelaide offered 22 and their f1 for Sharp and a F2, considering its highly expected there’ll be little between those two futures it’s a pretty lacklustre offer.

Collingwood didn’t even make an offer.

The eagles made the same offer they made for Lindsay.

None of those offers to me scream “highly rated”.

I would have thought Adelaide in particular would have been willing to do the deal without the f2 coming back given it’s a massive deficiency of theirs.

I think Sharp would've made a great combo with Reid, along with Duursma & Hewett supporting. It's a shame we couldn't get the pick to get him.
Hopefully CDT and Reid will form a long term ruck combination, with one of them replacing Waterman later on.

It also shows how highly rated everyone had cumming!

Most in the mock draft afl nuffy space and most in here thought he would slide outside the top 10 open pool players.

To be fair, there were a number of posters in here that rated Cumming very highly with pantskyle and Monocle among those suggesting Cumming was the best player from SA

Wonder if we would have matched a bid on Williams at Fremantle’s first pick had that eventuated. Not sure we would have and it would’ve been an interesting ripple effect on our later picks/bid matching

Essendon put in a final call to the Eagles two days before the draft floating options, including two of the Bombers' three top-10 picks as a trade, but when it became clear the price for pick No.2 was going to be similar to the price of pick No.1, Essendon didn't formalise a deal proposal.

As I been saying over like the last month, I was good whichever way the club went, whether it was selecting the second best player from the open pool or trading down for a couple more picks in the 10 since we're so devoid of top end talent on the field.

But also know the club's most likely gonna use CDT the same way the used Jobe this year where we only see him for like 10 games toward the middle to end of the year so they can bring him along.

We're definitely gonna be getting another top pick next year so we can only hope that the pick after Walker and Cochrane is a really good mid.

The mids are a guess obviously, but guess the defenders and rucks might be right.

1. Duursma
2. Uwland
3. Patterson
3. Annable
5. Cumming
6. Harry Dean
7. X taylor
8. Farrow
9. Robey
10. CDT
Duursma
Uwland
Cumming/Robey
Annable
Robey
Dean
Patterson
X.Taylor
Sharp
CDT
?
Grilj
Farrow

Pretty similar, I’m guessing the high defender is X.Taylor though given the amount of “Hybrid defenders” and Taylor having the most distinguished game style of the lot.

These types of articles are always a bit hindsight heroes, but it does at least lend some credence to the “they had Lindsay as the last available bidding consolation prize worth much in their rankings” concept.
The thing that really stood out to me is the comment about clubs trading to secure position. Happy to pay a second rounder to get to a spot where they know they will get one player in the tier they want. For us, it was clear we had 3 left in our tier (2 tied to GC and then Lindsay) and we got them. Also sounds like we likely missed out if not.

Either way it puts to bed the idea that we panicked or didn't know what we were doing. We'd been trying to trade up for a number of picks (for Sharp then Dovaston) and GC being able to match Addinsall was a very very close thing.
Those who melted about this (me included) should take the reality check and back the club in.
