With 22 teams (previously 21) and an 18 match season obviously not all teams play each other in a given year, I've never been sure how the VFL works its fixturing as to who plays who and where and who misses out. Is there a seeded draw with the teams ranked in terms of prior year finishing, a roster system over several years or just pot luck?

And some fixtures not happening would be a detriment to some clubs. For example, Port Melbourne would be less than happy if they failed to meet local rivals Williamstown and Sandringham during the season but probably would not be overly concerned about missing a meeting with the Gold Coast Suns Reserves. Conversely the Gold Coast Suns would be quite put out if their fixture saw no games against the Brisbane Lions or Southport, but missing playing Frankston or Werribee probably wouldn't bother them.

Does anyone know how the VFL works its fixtures?

I can help somewhat with some information. Stand alone clubs will play half the other stand alone clubs twice and the others once. Which half they play is determined on laddder position. If they finish in the bottom half of stand alone clubs they’ll play the bottom half of those sides twice and the other stand alone teams once. They then fill in the other games based on performance so a struggling stand alone club like Preston would have filllee the rest of their games with the weakest sides
and a Southport with the strongest. This only partially answers your question as it doesn’t explain what metric they use to fixture the other sides. Hope this helps.

Maybe players dont want to be at port melbourne

Hard to understand why , every port person thought we were entering a new era with Hird and McCartney a era of player retention, very competitive sides and attracting real quality but it seems despite Ports best efforts this is far from reality. Port will do well with the current list to win half a dozen games. Yould think that the problems are money related but that’s a guess - since the departure of Ayres the place hasn’t been the same but unless the unlikely happens and we sign a few gun players then prepare for Ports worse era in over 60 years to continue. Sadly Modern day Port nothing like the fierce and ultra competitive sides of old.

Matt Johnson and Josh Smith are going back to Langwarrin full time, massive loss. Especially Smith, held up relatively well as an undersized key defender. Johnson just kicked goals
The losses are starting to become a concern now. Murphy, Smith, and Johnson were all important parts of our team, and Davies was showing real potential this year in my opinion. Our drawing power as a club is going to be put to the test over this summer.

Werribee keep getting it done. Massimo Raso has signed on from Richmond. 19 years of age, 26 goals from 20 games in 2025.
Recruiting a few players, but the coaching vacancy is a concern.

Their preferred candidate has turned down the job and from what I hear, the list of coaching candidates is very small. Difficult to land anyone of note at this time of year. Not sure who else they are looking at.

Must be difficult for the players.

Don't really want to say a name. Very experienced and highly successful local coach.
Yeah fair enough. Well, put it this way, they've still got players that want to play for them, and the new coach will have something to work with. Its got decent compensation and its a club thats well set up. Regardless they'll be fine.

Agree mate. A great opportunity for a ambitious coach. That football club is managed by great people and has a wonderful culture.

I have no information on any other candidates, but a left field option would be Lauren Morecroft, current Eastern Ranges premiership coach and Vic Metro coach.

Didn't know anything about her until I heard her interviewed on SEN just prior to the draft - exceptional communicator ! Played AFLW for the Dogs. Had a handful of Eastern Ranges players drafted this year too.

Would be a bold move, but the administration at Werribee are very progressive.

Box Hill City Oval grandstand has been torn down. They're hoping it would be completed in time for the 2027 season. Interesting to see where they'll play their home games next year. Richmond also 1 year away for home games at Punt road Oval.
