A bunch of them were not matchedwhy were others being bid on then?
With nothing but his highlights and a few pre-draft summaries to go on I can easily see Ison being highly rated by the club - 190cm midfielder (who in recent training photos doesn't look out of place with the rest of our mids body wise) who can push forward and has a quality left foot ticks a hell of a lot of boxes.Twomey, ESPN, FOX, Craft of the Draft and Rookie Me Central all had Ison ranked between 20-27 going into the draft. I don't think its at all farfetched to imagine the club had him rated as a first round talent.
Not sure why anyone would care whether they truly did or not either. We picked him, now it's up to him to show his true level of talent.
To be fair once he went past about 30 there wasn't any point in other clubs bidding on him as it was only going to waste time. Hopefully he is an Enright or Harvey who both went at 47.Good luck to the kid, hopefully we’ve added another runner and he proves every club WRONG, but I think we need to accept that he was still available at pick 47 in a weak draft. The saying - ‘can’t believe he was available at this pick’, rings loud sometimes. Let’s just watch him develop and grow.
Similar goes for Byrne. Fingers crossed our recruiting team picked well.
I think this response just shows we are willing to ‘invent’ anything to make us feel right. To be fair once he went past about 30 there wasn't any point in other clubs bidding on him as it was only going to waste time. Hopefully he is an Enright or Harvey who both went at 47.

Pretty much every draft expert had Oliver Greaves rated in the first round, and he ended up being picked up in the rookie draft. Sliders happen
Several itks have reported we rated Ison there. He was also largely hidden for much of the year playing school footy. We've seen him up much closer then most clubs. Even Twomey rated him a late 1st. Theres plenty of evidence to suggest we might rate Ison 1st round. If they said it on the video, I believe it.
I dont think we make things up for those videos as in I dont think they say things just for the video. I do think they decide what to put in and leave out though.
For example there's probably a reasonable chance we didnt rate Dean top 3, but that'd almost certainly be left on the cutting room floor if there were comments in that regard. Or any conversation about not matching him. Same if we preferred another small forward to Talor, but he was taken before.

The club has barely talked up anyone this off season from what I've seen... I don't consider a couple of stray comments in some videos that they had Ison rated in the first round as 'pumping him up'.Yeah, you mean because you had him what, top 15?
All of those you mentioned know far less than all of the recruiters in the AFL...
I care because I'm done listening to this club try and talk things up until the next thing to talk up comes along.
Let the kid settle in and show what he's got, no need to pump him up so much.
I think inherent bias against the clubs past mistakes is making you go too far in the opposite direction..90 percent of the bids from Pick 25 onwards were not matched until Ison at pick 47 meaning the clubs that bid had a good idea that the clubs either did not have the points to match had enough of that type or were not prepared to match at that stage in the draft.I think this response just shows we are willing to ‘invent’ anything to make us feel right.
Just a thought - how many other club NGA’s were picked after pick 30? Time wasting?
As I said, hope the kid proves all clubs WRONG.
You’re the one cutting the kid down… why can’t we believe he can get to a certain level?Let's just wait and see how he turns out before loading up on expectations...
The comment was that they thought a bid could come as high as 15 but they rated him in the first round, which lasted 27 picks. If they had Ison rated at 15, they should have been rapt to get him at 48.
I would have loved to have seen literally any discussion revolving around trading out of 28 and 38... who came off the board that made us walk back from them so easily?Yeah, I was hoping there might be some discussion about how they were keen to get Talor, hoping he would last to our pick, excitement when he did, etc.
They really gave us doughnuts on that front.
Technically correct, but the only one who seemed to know their lines was DaviesPre-rehearsed meeting between the footy boss and the list management team
There might have been an element of that.Do we think clubs maybe 'took it easy on us' re Ison after we got semi-rolled on Dean?

There might have been an element of that.
Twomey, ESPN, FOX, and Rookie Me Central had Ison ranked between 20-27 going into the draft. At that range the talent pool had plateaued and was fairly even. Sliding from 27 to 40ish is not a big deal, and there were probably just alternative players available who clubs rated as good or marginally better/different than Ison.
Also those f**kwits WCE were probably suffering from failed bid fatigue syndrome at that stage of the draft…![]()

" Interesting question -I think
a) if you know we will match then you don't want to send the message to the kid you do pick up that they aren't the first choice
b) if us matching doesn't improve your position then "tactical bidding" isn't as valuable
c) Clubs may be concerned that "malicious" bidding might result in some retaliation down the line, so if a club has already "paid the price" (ie traded out of the first round) you don't need to push them any harder.
In summary
They knew we were matching Ison past pick 15, so they weren't getting the player, there wasn't a compelling reason to get rid of our picks and they didn't want to unnecessarily create animosity.
Also a bunch of teams probably didn't rate him that high, or had other list priorities.
Clubs can rate more than 1 player in the draft. This was a draft where many different profiles were available in the first round - all of whom would’ve addressed needs for every single team in the leagueThose draft vids are always so funny to me. Every club always seems to get their man!
Just once I want to see one where the draft room reacts to the pick before theirs with loud profanity, kicking chairs etc. '
Ahh we wanted Robey! That throws out our whole plan.' Then scrambling madly to pick the next bloke, saying 'yeah he wasn't the one we wanted, but you sometimes just have to settle for who is next on the board'.
Be like Davies saying 'yeah we actually had Harry Dean in the mid second round on our board, so we were surprised when West Coast told us they were bidding. It screwed us royally as we'd already committed to the kid, put his name on a locker, all that sort of thing. We were in too deep to back out, so we had to pick him'.

Our recruiter said Carlton would love a Key position player...We did not get one...so minus the profanity I am not sure Carlton drafted exactly who it wantedThose draft vids are always so funny to me. Every club always seems to get their man!

We are turning Dean into a small forwardHow did we not get a key position player?
Its the Carlton supporter way. Genuinely mind boggling stuff. For how crappy this years draft apparently was, it is such a Carlton supporter thing to then crap on drafting the best defender in the draft and a huge positional need.
Four positions on an AFL field (forward, midfield/wing, ruck, backline) and we drafted the best junior player in one of those positions. I am not seeing the issue with our draft.
Because it’s not okay to be positive as a Carlton fan. We have to be constantly negative to drive this narrative that we have “standards”. It’s infuriatingFor how crappy this years draft apparently was, it is such a Carlton supporter thing to then crap on drafting the best defender in the draft and a huge positional need.
