If the finals system was in place in 2024

Do we lose all of our last 4 games.

To me it felt like a psychological battle

If we were already guaranteed a place i daresay there would have been less pressure in those last few games and we may have finished higher.

We didnt get flogged it was small margins.
Fair assessment. We would have had Hawks MCG which I recon we could win. Followed by Bulldogs MCG (50/50) then Port Adelaide. Even in dream world we never would have beaten the Swans.

Longmire, Simpson, Goodwin premiership coaches. Buckley, Ken, even Cameron made prelims plus. Blokes like Ratten, experienced with multiple finals campaigns. Then guys like Dew who was a senior coach, now an assistant to a premiership team.
And we can't get one? Honestly what's more likely, we've tried them all (plus others) and they all said no, or we've checked out and are satisfied with Mr MidTable whilst Chris bloody Scott is still pushing to get that extra edge?
Simpson now officially employed at Carlton next year to help out Vossy
Meanwhile we're arguing over whether a 35 year old Collingwood delistee should get a 0, 1 or 2 year contact
It's all good

How are those two things even remotely connected?

I must admit I'm baffled why we haven't got the best Victorian Assistant coaches in the land lining up to come to Freo on about the same money i make selling stuff Monday to Friday for a local company.
Will this club ever stop accepting mediocrity? 🙃

Brady Grey ironically would have likely had a better run under JL. Ross never put time into improving skills and Greys were easily his biggest weakness. Could have had a longer career if he could hit a target over 30m.

Isn't Barlow genuinely one of the higher ranked up and coming coaches at the moment?
Chris Mayne is also extremely well regarded to my knowledge.

Unfortunately, there are some posters around here that associate being an ex Fremantle player with being mediocre at everything.

Not sure where else to put this. An example of the disadvantage JL and the club have when it comes to support staff.

Giansiracusa generally regarded as a senior coach in waiting, with the option of three big Vic clubs who all offered him assistant gigs. We will never, ever be able to compete with this.

Yeah, but didn't we get Mayney?

Sure. If getting the Ashcroft boys and Jasper Fletcher for free was part of the deal
Was a bit of a stupid tongue in cheek hypothetical, but tbh if that had happened we would've started the rebuild and may have avoided the shocking list management blunders of the 2016-2017 period so who knows

What gives any reason to think that Gia is any better than Corey, Graham or Rawlings?

Coming from Essendon’s footy program is hardly a great endorsement.

I think we are good at getting coaching talent personally.

What I hope to be seeing from a coaching perspective in 2026:
  • this faster play we are currently hearing about. It's no shock most of our exciting goal highlights on the socials last year was as a result of a 'fast break'
  • keep using LJ as our big bodied mid as much as possible to help with our mosquito fleet, except when filling in for the resting ruck.
  • less just kicking it out to the wing, or there anyway after giving your mate a quick free but useless possession down back (Ryan2cox2ryan)
  • not restructuring (dropping a tall) when a ruck or tall forward gets injured (i.e. use Mcox)
  • given our availability atm, to not have to use fill-in utilities in the backline when we have specialised backline players ready to go
  • play more 1 on 1 in defence instead of nearly always JLo's covering space which good teams sliced through with ease
  • find a faster/bigger tagger for when we will need one (Wagner is too small body on body and got repeatedly burnt off by Daicos on the lead. He's convenient but not it)
  • use early rounds to identify our best wings for 2026 season (should include Sharp, NOD, Worner, and Banfield and any others)
  • we drafted all of these dangerous mid/forwards so take advantage of the extra bench player to keep trialling them when ready and see who stands up best out of the new and existing crop and helps us put another couple of goals on the board (by them or assist) per game as we need.
  • Every team will try different things with the 5th bench spot until an ideal is shown by one or more of the clubs so we may as well take advantage of this and try different things and not just go safe and conservative (see point above).
  • Adjust quicker to teams tearing us a new one. Team takes you by surprise in a first quarter - win the second quarter on the scoreboard. There shouldn't be any team that makes our 2026 squad (current availability) look like a bottom 6 team for a whole game.
  • that's all.
except, with the current squad and our draw, I think JLo will be in trouble with less than 16 wins (injuries aside). The club has done some dumb things in it's history but the dumbest for sure would be wasting this very talented, across the board, age balanced list.
