Will have to trade 2028 picks into 2027 too given we have a few talented NGAs in 2027 unless the AFL stop us, which they probably will.
I really don’t think you can read too far ahead on these things. At the start of 2025 we were all wondering whether Kobe Williams was going to pick us or the Hawks and he’s not on an AFL list at all. Similarly if Sullivan Robey was on someone’s accademy list they wouldn’t have been too worried about stockpiling points 12 months out.

Maybe, but i doubt the club is going to sit on their hands hoping other clubs won't show interest. Forward planning is important and a thing.

I guess I’m more saying planning is somewhat futile, not that it’s not a thing at all, or making any comment on hoping about what other clubs do.

Obviously you have cases like Cochrane and Walker next year where you have high conviction they’ll be early picks and you need to plan, especially in the new system. But Cooney for example could become a 1st/2nd round pick or go entirely in drafted at this point.

I don’t think, for example that you trade out of a current draft just to accumulate points in future drafts based on a premature assessment of where bids will land, if you end up wanting the player at all.

If we do well out of the 2026 NGA / FS pool (Hok, El Souki, Cooney and West- if they all get picked up), you just know the AFL will think about changing the rules for 2027 to stop us getting a few more
We are going to have to make a ton of trades knowing that we are most likely have no 1st round picks for the Butters recruitment.

I don't think it's any use worrying about what trades we do or don't have to make until it's clear how good we and Port are a few games into the season.

If Port don't gel under a new coach and start the season 0-3 or whatever, and we start 2-1, while yes obviously things can change, but it becomes far more likely that Port just take the compensation pick that will thus almost certainly be a top 5 pick, as opposed to just pushing through a trade which will be a weird hodgepodge of multiple picks in the late teens and 20's, years into the future (so they can't realise the value now), with Tassie coming in in that period.

In some respects even if we can offer them marginally more in a trade or that they might bank on the fact that we collapse and therefore our future 1sts hold more value, it might not be worth it from Port's point of view to spend ages negotiating this trade - take your pick 5 compensation pick, use it, and not have to worry about managing these weird future assets.

If we do poorly next year and Hawks or Cats continue to contend then he very well may look past us anyway.

Yeah, which is why I'm not so worried about the mechanics of getting him across, because there's still lots of variables.

Port do unexpectedly well = he might stay
We do unexpectedly poorly = he might not want to come to us
Butters himself has a drop off in form and is no longer one of the game's cream of the crop elite = Port aren't that fussed in needing to add a 4th future 1st rounder, they're happy to accept 2-3

etc. etc.
