Just spent a small fortune on a rig refresh. Got about 5 years out of the old build. New is in bold.

  • AMD R7 9800X3D (old: Intel i7 10700k)
  • PNY RTX 5080 (old: AORUS RTX 2080 ti)
  • 32GB DDR5 (32GB DDR4)
  • ASUS Prime B850 mobo (ASRock H470 Phanton)
  • Corsair RM1000x PSU (replaces Corsair 750w from my original build in 2017)
  • Lian Li 360mm liquid cooler (matches the case and case fans) (Replaces Corsair 240mm liquid cooler from original build)

Keen to throw it all in and see how it runs Battlefield 6.

I had ethernet cabling installed throughout the house when we built it 😊

One in each bedroom (4)
One in my study
Two in family room
One in theatre

Highly recommended 🍻
if I ever have my own house built instead of buying existing, I'll definitely do it, including some setup for poe cameras to outside etc. but really can't be bothered going through the process when this wifi extender is working fine for gaming and everything else currently. gotta focus the rest of my savings on the more important things 😭

heard about the RAM prices going up on reddit...just checked out of curiosity and the exact RAM kit I bought for $390 in January is now $900 LMAO wtf

4k60 seems ambitious with the hardware listed even if FSR is utilised. Still, I'm not one to doubt Valve typically so actually kind of interested to see how this thing goes even if it's not something for me.

The whole range looks interesting, although yeah I'm not sure I'll grab one personally. I didn't mind the original Steam Controller but it's hard to go past the trusty Xbox controller.

The 4k60 spec is obviously going to be more for your Hollow Night type games, and I have no doubt your standard gamer is going to cry that it doesn't run Battlefield 6 at that kind of res.

I'm interested in checking out that Steam controller price permitting. I was an Xbox controller devotee too and would just get a new one every 12 months or so when it would get stick drift but after grabbing a Gamesir I'll never look back.

I'll definitely get the controller just for the hell of it. The other stuff I don't need. I guess the PC could be an indie game or streaming machine for your TV? And the headset, well I've never actually tried VR so maybe I could give it a go

Does anyone know anything about the following as I can't get a clear answer on Google.

I have Windows 11 home, so no bitlocker but device encryption. To update bios it's recommended to disable Bitlocker, is this the same for Home's device encryption? Also if I wanted to roll the dice without disabling device encryption would it be enough to just write down my keys that I found on my Microsoft account and would they get me back in no dramas should I have issues after a bios update?

I don't know much about it really but it appears to incorporate Bitlocker in some capacity, so I'd definitely be keeping the key handy.

Some BIOS updates are smart enough to suspend it for you but it depends on the method used, maybe check Bitlocker on your device to confirm it's not actually enabled, and if it is just suspend it for the update.

Thanks, that's sort of all I could find as well but most results that came back were specifically talking about bitlocker. I assumed I had bitlocker because I have padlocks on my drives but then I only recently learnt that Home doesn't have bitlocker and instead device encryption which sounds very similar under the hood.

It's not something I actually need and I did try to disable it once and I got a popup saying it might take a while to decrypt the drive. Then I thought about the old "if it's not broken don't fix it" saying and just left it. There are a couple articles now about ASRock X870 boards cooking even the 7800x3d on old bios versions. I think specifically version 3.06 and from memory (I need to check when I get home) mine is 3.10 which was from factory. The reason I didn't update it at the time was that the latest updates were only for support for 9000 CPUs but now I'm getting paranoid as the latest updates are supposed to address the underlying causes of ASRocks boards destroying CPUs. Then again if there was an issue with mine I'm sure I would have known by now.

I just realised my current PC config is 6 years and 1 week old... time for a refresh maybe.

Any idea on the effect on RAM prices the demise of Crucial will have, since Micron will now only be supplying RAM to AI datacentres?
Who knows, I don't think Crucial has a massive market share in Australia so we may not be too affected. Sounds like Micron are continuing to supply parts to other manufacturers so they shouldn't be too impacted, it's just their in-house consumer brand that's shifting focus.

Like dav said the thing with Micron amongst all the doom posting is they're still selling to customers who make products for consumers. They're just pulling out of making their own products for consumers which was small anyway. Not that it will help with the RAM situation but that detail doesn't make for very good clickbait.

$1500 now

shoulda stocked up lmao...would've been doing better than my stonks

I just looked up my past orders. I paid $188 for my 2x16gb 6000/30 kit from Scorptec August last year. They still stock that same SKU and now it's $699 and says a limit of 2 per household lol. I should apply my FC26 market skills to IRL and get rich.

I saw a headline today that prices aren't expected to come down until 2027. Not sure how they got that number though but I guess I won't be upgrading to 64gb when I swap my 7800x3d for the Zen 6 equivalent.
