Our gun laws are not preventing the increase in access to illegally owned guns, this has been the case for a while now. The laws do more to handcuff legal owners than anything by prohibiting carry and disregarding self-defence as a reason for ownership. And, if this trend continues the only outcome that it will cause is turning Australians into sitting ducks.

Either the laws must accomplish their goal of lessening illegal ownership rather than having it increase, or, legal/fully licensed/checked ownership (which does exist now) should include self-defence as a legitimate reason.
