I honestly don't think they had much choice other than McGrath.
Redman was the other one who was mentioned, but you can hardly name Redman your captain when you've demoted your previous one for exploring a trade, when Redman himself tried to get traded to Adelaide (albeit a lot quieter and through management but got no interest).

Almost as big of a bungle as when St Kilda took McCartin over Petracca despite every article for the entire year having Petracca as miles ahead as pick 1.
I'm not sure whoever went to Essendon would've developed though, if McCluggage went there he would've been just as maligned as underdeveloped as McGrath.

I remember being filthy that they were going to be rewarded with pick 1 for what they did. They shouldn't have even been given a first round pick that year.
