Is setterfield actually confirmed to be out till round 8? I know when we first delisted him there was reports his injury would likely keep him out till mid year, but I thought more recent reports said he'd be doing pre season training from early Jan.

who knows

A lisfranc injury timeline return is 4-10 months.
He did it in August. A lot depends on the severity of the injury and his rehab.

I thought it was closer to mid year estimated initially.

That's not how the MSD works I think.

You can't cut players to open up a space. It has to come from an injury or retirement.
Correct.

Managed to find the article that said he'd be ready for round 1...anddddd its written by J Ralph so probably full of shit

If there’s someone better MSD just cut setters and it’s only cost what 100k ?

That’s nothing in afl land especially with our abundance of cap room
Doesn’t work like that . Can not just cut a bloke mid season. The whole argument against is not really about cap space. For me it is stopping what has been a continual trend of hanging onto injury prone players.
Setterfield is fine if he stays fit. In the three years we have had him he hasn’t. Decent enough player.

I think saying he will be ready for round 1 was more about generating interest from other clubs and a new contract.....not sure there is actually truth to it.

These days you probably want them doing a mini preseason anyway once ready.

remember that was the plan with Goldy (retirement to open up MSD Spot).....and we lost our two best ruckman and he played almost every game.

You can almost be assured we will have at least 1 injury.
Not sure it was the actual plan.
It was a plan that was rumoured but I am pretty sure Goldstein was not in on it. He was not ready to retire at the end of the year and held off announcing his retirement until there was no interest.

Yeah makes sense, was trying to remember where I saw that update, but having now found it I realised I shouldve taken it with a grain of salt

See I don’t see it as sentimental but rather pragmatic.

When it comes to our list structure/mid mix we’ve decided moving forward the A mix is Martin (Sweeper) Caldwell (first hands) and Durham (exit )

B mix likely Tsatsas (def) parish (hands) Zerrett (explosive/user)

Then we have Farrow Sharpe and Robey as the next gen version (who are let’s say 3 seasons away)

With Martin out for the year we need a mature defensive big bodied mid who’s willing to play for Essendon. But who also knows it’s just for a year as Martin will be back and the young guys will take priority next season.

When you make a list of proven professional and productive players at AFL level who are willing to take that role and are available the list gets real short real fast.

Setters injury has him missing the first 8 weeks during which you’d want to be getting games into the kids then anyway, they’d be due a rest by the time he’s back.

Then see how it goes. Worse case cut him midseason and go to the msd if his injury timeline is an issue. Get the best available VFL mid with an established run of form.

As far as project players go. We have them on every line. Our issue isn’t a lack of projects it’s lack of good AFL players with high end talent.

I get the impulse to bring in as much young talent as possible but that’s not helpful to an actual rebuild. Need adults too
Martin may have even less defensive bones than Parish and Shiel

Defence is about Effort. Nothing else it’s a choice.

And physically at 192cm Martin is far more capable defensively then either Parish or Sheil when taking on bigger opponents assuming the right training program
I do generally agree with this, mindset and effort, but they are still 2 skillsets that need to be trained. Not everyones Hewett, Dunkley, Rowbottom, Snelling Lambert

Also you say effort and nothing else matters, then list size straight after it

Wheres the 8 weeks, is there an article now?

Was from the above post that I was quoting.

I think they get that from the fact a lisfranc injury can take up to 10 months to return from. Can also be 3-4 months but based on Setterfield history we can assume it will be closer to 10 months.

Most likely he is missing the first few games of AFL or VFL even if just to get base fitness up.

Yeah fair enough. Theres a contradiction there.

Should have said it’s a combination of Physical tools + Effort.

I feel like the Parish/Sheil ball watching conversation goes back to “some players don’t have defensive instincts”

I will agree that some players are more comfortable with physicality then others but if you’ve made AFL level you’ve got enough to be a good defender. Just have to want to do it

It's not. Defence has it's nuances beyond effort and that's why some players can work hard defensively but not be good at it.

If we get 12+ games from him, thats a bonus as this strikes me as more than just a mature body on a weekend.

Seems to be well respected, has strong cores and values and appears to be an ultimate professional for the young and exciting group of mids we're building out.

The inijury isnt ideal but we know what we are getting. Looking at it on the bright side and we should all be ok with it. We have enough youth, we know what we are getting with Will. Accept it, embrace and move on

At the moment the only source we have is code sports saying round 1 and the club saying 'early rounds'. Sounds pretty positive at this stage

We also know Setters did his lisfranc on July 12

We also know that its 8 months in between then and round 1

These are the facts so far

Has not joined in full training yet. Not that means a lot right now. We will get an idea of his time line once he joins the main group. If he is back in match sim by the last week of Jan then he will be around the week 1 or 2 mark.
