**** me. Ok, well whatever ranking cricket has in the country’s sports interests I thought they’d have better pathways
They did, until they were drawn to fancy new doohickies and whizzbangs like moths to a flame and forgot good grassroots development.

Yeah he’d be the one that is most likely to make it. This soft tissue thing is starting to be a worry though
He'll almost certainly be on the India tour before the ashes if fit - see what happens there. I'd bet on him, but fielding has become a worry.

I think in our case we all grew up with seeing a generational cricket team from the late 90s to the early 2000s. Churning out star after star with the bat and ball. Its produced a generation of fans ever since, despits some lean years after that. But we bounced back eventually.

Would not know much about the 70s or 80s though. Did see a good turnout based on the Channel 9 TV broadcasts.

England barring a brief window around 2011-12, never really had that dominant side to really hang their hat on in recent times.

Its the old cliche of everybody loves a winner. Be a winner, fans follow for years and years.

I playerd Subbies with a young pommy lad who went on to be the CEO of the ECB and effectively invented the Hundred. That’s another story.

At the time he was about 21 and had played a bit of County Cricket but had been around a few different teams trying to crack it. He could seriously play. But he was lazy and lacked the killer instinct. One day we were in the middle of a bitter local derby, when our man did his usual thing of look pretty good and then get out softly. As he came back to sit with us he was commiserated by a few of us and uttered the famous words “doesn’t matter… I’ll get some tomorrow”

Our best player was one Test batsman Jeff Moss, who was a lovely man but he flew into a rage and gave the Pom one of the biggest bakes I’ve ever seen. He gave him both barrels about how we only get to bat 12 times a year and if you didn’t make the most of it when you got in, you would never go anywhere and that’s why England were no good. When questioned our man had had 46 innings the previous summer in the UK. It was stark and I turned it into a coaching thing that I’ve run with for well over 20 years.
My first season there I had 23 innings and i opted out of around a dozen friendly or non league game, particularly in the back end of the season .

It was great to bat a lot but i found it detrimental for me as found I lost the want to make big scores when I got in

I think history will record cricket around the turn of the century as a golden age, there was an unusual amount of teams with once in a lifetime players coming into their peak.

Brings a literal meaning to 'it's just not cricket'
I don't mind the idea of private equity in cricket if I thought the money generated might filter down into grass roots but I've just pissed myself laughing even writing that.

England just dont care about cricket like we do.
The Wisden podcast had a good discussion about this today.

A few years ago, the ECB surveyed over a thousand 7-12 year olds across England and Wales, and asked them to name 10 sports.

60 per cent had never heard of cricket.

That's how much it is a minority sport there. Going off terrestrial TV after 2005 - the highest rating series of all time in the UK - was a massive mis-step.

It's about as popular there as greyhound racing is here.

Which is weird to me in a way because their media seem to be obsessed with it. Maybe it’s just what I watch. I’m just trying to learn here
Its a private school toffs sport over there and the media and govt are run by private school w***ers, to a much greater extent than they are here.

As others have said its no longer on FTA lkke it was before 2005

Id argue greyhound racing here at least everyone knows about because everyone has been in a pub with it on in the corner as part of the TAB setup.

It just doesn't happen.

Eddie McGuire was against private ownership when the BBL started. I agree with him now even with BBL flirting with it.

The Stars were green because the idea was to sell it to some Pakistani businessman

Is Adelaide blue to attract an Indian billionaire?

Like us they’ve bastardised the season to fit in The Hundred. County season starts very early, when it’s wet and finishes in the dreary autumn. The best month of the year is reserved for the Hundred. Counties are struggling to survive because of the bastardisation. They probably have too many anyway but good luck untangling it.

The counties are now surviving because of the hundred rather than it being the main cause of their troubles. They're reliant on £100,000,000+ of funding from the ECB each year just to get by.

As a side note I've reached 10 years as a member of dropped crowd catch club.
Put one down at the Melbourne Renegades vs Sydney Sixers BBL game a decade ago
